Background / History

Early Life and Seclusion

Dugu Linglong’s constitution attracted obsessive admirers throughout her school and university years. During the summer after her first university year, she visited Mount Zhongnan to escape the attention and met the master who identified her Supreme Enchanting Bone. She began formal martial training at eighteen and reached the pinnacle of the Dragon Kingdom’s martial world within ten years 964.

After graduating, she withdrew from ordinary society to cultivate on Mount Zhongnan. Apart from occasional trips for necessities, she spent most of her time in meditation, pursuing the Land Immortal realm. Her master’s death after more than two centuries of life reinforced the warning that cultivation below that realm could not overcome human mortality 965.

Teaching Chu Xuan

Seven years before her introduction, Dugu Linglong encountered Chu Xuan while he was still attending secondary school. Recognizing his unusual constitution and talent, she accepted him as her only direct disciple 964.

To discourage romantic interest and protect her secluded life, she invented the identity of his “master’s wife.” She taught him from behind a screen, lived separately on the mountain, and handled many sect matters through talisman messages. Despite this distance, she personally instructed him in martial arts, cultivation methods, and Daoist techniques 964 1054 1060 1089.

The Imperial Capital Investigation

After divining a sudden collapse in Chu Xuan’s fortune, Dugu Linglong left Mount Zhongnan to investigate a potentially fatal calamity. Jiang Che, who had been monitoring her with reconnaissance robots, arranged their apparently coincidental encounter after her arrival in the Imperial Capital 1045 1046 1049.

She learned that Chu Xuan had desecrated the Liu Family’s ancestral grave while his perception was distorted. Rather than dismiss the offense, she promised to recover the remains and secure an explanation. She also offered the family a protective pendant as a temporary apology 1052 1054.

Dugu Linglong subsequently treated Chu Xuan and removed the Bewilderment Card’s effect with the Mind-Clearing Dharma Mantra. She insisted that he apologize personally, secured the Liu Family’s agreement to set aside the dispute, and sent him back to the mountain under escort while she continued investigating 1062 1065 1066 1067.

Chu Xuan’s Death

Footage of Chu Xuan desecrating Xuan Zhenzi’s tomb revealed that he had fallen under another illusion. Dugu Linglong returned to Mount Zhongnan with Jiang Che, troubled that an enemy had penetrated the sect’s protected mausoleum 1088 1090.

They arrived while Chu Feng was attacking Chu Xuan. Dugu Linglong struck Chu Feng’s wrist from over a thousand meters away, but only diverted the fatal blow slightly. Chu Xuan’s shattered meridians and ruptured organs were beyond her healing abilities; he died despite her continued infusion of true qi 1095 1096.

She intended to kill Chu Feng in retaliation, but accepted Jiang Che’s offer to handle him. She remained unaware that Jiang Che had manipulated the events leading to Chu Xuan’s death 1098.

Restoring the Sect and Leaving the Mountain

After Chu Xuan’s burial, Dugu Linglong was left without the successor she had intended to inherit the sect. Jiang Che stayed with her, helped restore the damaged formation, and accompanied her through her grief. Their cooperation and his nightly companionship gradually broke down her habitual self-reliance 1101 1102 1103 1104 1106.

When Jiang Che prepared to leave, she stopped him and admitted that she could not bear to part with him, shattering her long-cultivated, emotionally detached Dao Heart. They shared her first kiss, and she later sealed the sect’s important halls, activated its restored defenses, and returned with him to the Imperial Capital 1108 1109.

Divination Backlash and Breakthrough

Still seeking the mastermind behind Chu Xuan’s downfall, Dugu Linglong traced the karmic connection between Chu Xuan and Chu Feng. She encountered the system’s concealment of Jiang Che’s heavenly secrets and tried to force her way through it. The resulting backlash cracked her Divination Coins and injured her soul and meridians 1129 1130.

Jiang Che suppressed the backlash, then pretended that healing her had gravely damaged his martial foundation. Believing him, she agreed to practice the Yin Yang Union Sutra to restore him. She explicitly maintained that this decision did not mean accepting his relationship with Liu Ruyan 1131 1132 1133.

The following morning, Dugu Linglong discovered that she had advanced to the Late-Celestial Human stage. Her attachment to Jiang Che deepened, but her uncertainty about sharing him with other women remained unresolved 1135 1136.

Appearance

  • Build: Petite and slender, standing 1.48 meters tall; appears approximately fifteen or sixteen despite being twenty-eight 964 1044 1051.
  • Hair and face: Long silver-white hair, fair skin, delicate youthful features, and large, clear eyes 964.
  • Clothing: Usually wears a moon-white or snow-white tasseled gown. Her airport attire includes faint silver cloud embroidery; she also wears white embroidered shoes 1046 1049 1136.
  • Bearing: Combines a fragile outward appearance with the cool composure and imposing Dao aura of a Celestial Human expert 1044 1049.

Personality

Dugu Linglong values quiet cultivation and finds unsolicited admiration burdensome rather than flattering. Years of obsessive attention made her wary of romantic approaches and protective of her personal boundaries. Her aloofness coexists with considerable independence: she is accustomed to preserving the sect and resolving its problems without assistance 964 1049 1088.

She distinguishes protecting a disciple from excusing his conduct. Although she saves Chu Xuan and acknowledges that he was manipulated, she refuses to shield him from apologizing or to deny the harm done to the Liu Family. She accepts responsibility for sending him there and for failing to notice the danger 1060 1065.

Her determination can become recklessness. During the karmic investigation, fear of another attack leads her to exceed the limits she had promised to observe. She later admits that pressing the divination was a mistake 1130 1134.

Romantic attachment introduces unfamiliar jealousy, insecurity, and embarrassment. Nevertheless, she eventually chooses to acknowledge her feelings instead of denying them. Even after becoming intimate with Jiang Che, she continues to insist that affection does not automatically settle her objections to his other relationships 1108 1125 1133 1135.
