Background / History

Hiruzen had previously resigned after Konoha’s disastrous Third Shinobi War, during which fighting reached the Land of Fire itself. Although Minato Namikaze became Fourth Hokage, Hiruzen retained authority over his own direct Anbu, creating an unusual period in which two Hokage-held Anbu forces existed simultaneously 7 28 101.

Following Minato’s death during the Nine-Tails’ Rampage, Hiruzen returned to power as a temporary measure to stabilize Konoha, publicly promising to abdicate once the crisis passed 1. His return was later celebrated throughout the village as the work of a hero who restored peace, while Orochimaru’s contributions as frontier commander were minimized or attributed to Hiruzen’s leadership 36 37.
