Background

The Cloud Lord began as the Yunbi, a dead object with only a faint consciousness. Gao Xian transformed it into a Guardian Deity, named it the Cloud Lord Guardian, and wore its jade-pendant form at his waist. 49

By the journey to Lingzhou, he had become one of Daojun Kongchen's guardians alongside General Donkey. He initially treated the skies and ten-thousand-mile cloud sea as his personal domain, proclaiming himself unmatched in speed and freedom. Kongchenzi repeatedly restrained him after his theatrics and boasting became disruptive. 57

The Cloud Lord's inner realm gradually developed beyond a storage space. It could hold disembodied consciousness and souls without their dissipating, enabling Kongchenzi to create mist-based illusions and control events within the realm. 103 After absorbing the Yanmo Realm, Ketu Star, and other resources, the Cloud Realm became an independent cave-heaven world central to Kongchenzi's forces. 347 355 390

Appearance

The Cloud Lord's true form is a jade pendant that can unfold into a bank of rosy cloud and mist.

  • His early cloud form has a mist-made face, large mouth, eyes, and tail. 57
  • Within the Cloud Realm, his divine soul can appear as an elegant young man in ancient-style Divine Lord robes. 120
  • When descending among mortals, he disguises himself as a learned scholar in loose robes and a scholar's cap. 303
  • He favors white, flowing scholar's clothing and presents himself as a refined gentleman. 307

Personality

Cloud Lord is proud, theatrical, and intensely self-regarding. He calls himself a peerless poet and sage of literature, recites verse without invitation, and considers his literary talent beyond the appreciation of ordinary people. 57 212 294

He is also meticulous to an extreme. Items placed in the Cloud Realm are cleaned, sorted, and arranged neatly; even a quilt returns folded into a precise square. 57 His perfectionism extends to architecture and storage, leading to frequent arguments with Old Scholar over the layout of palaces and pavilions. 212

Behind his lofty manner, Cloud Lord is shrewd, acquisitive, and competitive. He records General Donkey's misconduct in exhaustive detail, confiscates his money, and privately schemes to profit from spreading his methods in the mortal world. 163 177 297 Despite these flaws, Kongchenzi considers him dependable when entrusted with serious matters. 310 462
