Background / History

General Donkey was originally a donkey who followed an unnamed old Daoist across many regions. He claims his greatest contribution on that journey was carrying the old Daoist over tens of thousands of miles; he never entered Kunlun Divine Mountain because he considered it a death trap. By the time he meets Gao Xian, he is already an old monster with extensive experience traveling the mortal world 225.

Gao Xian bestows the Guardian Spirit title upon him at Cloud Heaven Temple on Mount Lao. Though Gao Xian initially considers slaughtering him for food, General Donkey avoids this fate by offering his service and becomes Gao Xian's mount and earliest guardian 1.

A wisp of Incense and Fire later gives him his first explicit divine ability: fire breath. The gift strengthens his attachment to Gao Xian, whom he repeatedly calls Master, while also intensifying his desire for praise, rewards, and recognition 10.

General Donkey's ordinary form is a plump, black-furred donkey with a long face, large front teeth, upright ears, and a notably sturdy head. His true appearance often undermines the imposing image he tries to project 259 320.

General Donkey is vain, greedy, loud, and intensely competitive. He sees himself as Daojun Kongchen's foremost guardian and resents any attention given to Azure Dragon Boy, Cloud Lord, or other Divine Lords. He habitually turns even minor accomplishments into evidence of his unmatched importance 106 289.

He is also clever in a self-serving way. He can improvise excuses, manipulate less perceptive allies, impersonate demons, and exploit opportunities for profit. His schemes frequently collapse because he is too eager for money, treasure, food, gambling, or public admiration 155 227 304.

Despite his constant complaints about his master, he is loyal to Kongchenzi and will undertake dangerous missions when called upon. He fears genuine punishment and avoids outright wickedness because he believes Kongchenzi would turn him into donkey meat buns if he crossed that line 238 258 336.

Early Guardian of Cloud Heaven Temple

General Donkey accompanies Gao Xian from the beginning, serving as his mount, spokesperson, and intimidating front for unwanted mortal visitors. His talking donkey form frightens Xie Zizhi and the bailiffs away from Cloud Heaven Temple 8.

After receiving Incense and Fire, he gains fire breath and becomes more confident in his role as Gao Xian's demon-slaying guardian 10.

Demon-Slaying Travels

He leads the attack on the River God Temple, terrifying its surviving inhabitants into submission 25. Later, he and Cloud Lord investigate Anle Temple's connection to the locust plague, with General Donkey using incense-based deception to obtain intelligence 66.

In the Divine Capital, he destroys demons in the West Market and battles an Incense and Fire Golden Spider while Kongchenzi proceeds onward 124 125.

Kunlun Divine Realm

As Kongchenzi's Heavenly Palace develops, General Donkey receives the promised Imperial Donkey Supervisorate and is treated as a Divine Lord rather than merely a mount 260 271. He remains preoccupied with treasures, gambling, housing, and competition with the other guardians 204 206 259.

Descent to the Yu Kingdom

General Donkey descends to the mortal world with Cloud Lord, betting that their respective Great Daos will prove superior 303. He attempts to establish himself as “Great Sword Immortal Lu,” but is fined for selling pills without a permit and eventually decides to build a reputation by slaying demons 304.

He kills the Alligator Gar Dragon in the East Sea, loots its cave, and expects universal praise. Instead, witnesses identify his donkey head and spread wanted notices branding him a dangerous Donkey Demon 305 306.

Yanmo Realm Infiltration

Kongchenzi sends General Donkey into the Yanmo Realm because his demonic nature, Crimson Lotus Karmic Fire, and unmatched escape speed make him capable of passing as a demon lord 336.

Once inside, he becomes the Red Lotus Fire Demon, seizes a demon palace, commands more than one hundred thousand Yin Demons and Blood Demons, and gains the favor of the Heavenly Demon Kings 338. He then destroys the malevolent qi demon pool by swallowing it alongside the Yanmo Tianzi Robe's Emperor Robe True Spirit, turning the entire realm against him 338.

Kongchenzi ultimately cuts open the sealed Yanmo Realm with the Azure Dragon Sword and allows General Donkey to escape 339.

Later Divine Lord

General Donkey gains an Innate Law Talisman of the Fire Element Great Dao and later establishes the extravagantly named Huode Great General Realm, transforming it into a luxurious Fire Virtue Immortal Palace 375 474 480.
