Background / History

Konoha service

Orochimaru was already a renowned genius before receiving the title of one of the Three Ninja. The Third Hokage regarded him as the most talented of his three disciples. During the Third Shinobi World War, he remained an important Konoha commander despite his increasingly independent outlook 167 243.

After attempts to extract intelligence from the deceased Raikage’s mind failed, Orochimaru directed research into the corpse’s physical properties. He recruited Hagoromo for his Lightning Release expertise, but also questioned why Hagoromo’s apparently ordinary cells could withstand unusually powerful techniques 159.

Orochimaru subsequently commanded the front facing the Land of Water. His operations included a large-scale raid on a coastal supply stronghold and infiltration missions aimed at intelligence gathering, sabotage, and the elimination of isolated enemy units 167 168 176.

Human experiments and defection

Orochimaru’s secret experiments involved missing Konoha shinobi and the transplantation of Wood Release cells, with assistance from Danzo. Hagoromo discovered his underground laboratory but withheld the information, hoping to encourage research into genetic engineering and inherited powers 239 240 241.

As Orochimaru’s demand for experimental subjects increased, he stopped making serious efforts to conceal his work. He came to regard Konoha as a restriction on his research rather than a necessary home. When the Anbu exposed his laboratory, the Third Hokage hesitated and allowed him to leave 243.

Jiraiya, the Anbu, and Root pursued him with different objectives: Jiraiya wanted him returned alive, the Anbu permitted lethal force if necessary, and Root wanted him killed to protect its secrets. Orochimaru escaped through an Earth Clone deception aided by Hagoromo’s deliberately misleading attack. After three days of unsuccessful searches, Konoha formally recognized him as an S-Rank missing-nin 244 245.

Akatsuki and the Uchiha

Akatsuki accepted Orochimaru partly to keep a dangerous, unpredictable researcher under observation. He later clashed with Itachi, lost, and left the organization after concluding that neither the power nor the deeper intelligence he wanted could be obtained there 290 313.

His interest in the Sharingan shifted toward the Mangekyō Sharingan. He competed with Hagoromo to locate Shisui, then identified Sasuke as a future target after the Uchiha massacre. Itachi’s possible intervention and Konoha’s close surveillance prevented an immediate abduction 274 282.

Chūnin Exams and Konoha conflict

Orochimaru infiltrated the Chūnin Exams as a Sound ninja. Prepared disguises and the chakra changes caused by repeated body transfers prevented Mirai from recognizing him 339.

After confronting Team 6, he summoned the First Hokage to test Hagoromo. His principal objectives were to draw out Hagoromo’s eye technique and investigate his connection to Ryūchi Cave. The experiment exceeded Orochimaru’s control when the First Hokage began using his greater Wood Release techniques 341 343 346.

Orochimaru later killed the Fourth Kazekage and his guards in an ambush, then impersonated the Kazekage beside the Third Hokage. His disguise prompted Sunagakure’s forces to attack Konoha even though Sunagakure had no actual Konoha Crush Plan. It also created an opportunity for Hagoromo to act against Shukaku without the villages’ alliance obstructing him 355 356.

Inside the sealed battlefield, Orochimaru fought the Third Hokage and Danzo with four reincarnated Kage. He escaped Danzo’s Reverse Four Symbols Seal through an extreme shedding technique, but the battle and escape left his body near collapse 364 365 372.

Naruto’s resurrection and a new vessel

Hagoromo pursued Orochimaru because he needed Chiyo’s resurrection technique to remove the Nine-Tails from Naruto without permanently killing him. Orochimaru agreed, drawn by the opportunity to witness Hagoromo’s ability to erase a tailed beast 362 366 367.

At a backup hideout in the Land of Iron, Orochimaru used Rebirth Impure World Resurrection on Naruto, then immediately transferred into a prepared female body. He subsequently escaped the underground base with Naruto before the Nine-Tails’ attack destroyed it 366 367 368 370.

Witnessing Hagoromo’s confrontation with the Nine-Tails broadened Orochimaru’s research interests. The Uchiha vessel he had worked to obtain no longer seemed as important beside the unfamiliar powers he had encountered 371.

Akatsuki’s attempted capture

Akatsuki eventually located Orochimaru’s underground base in the Land of Rice Fields. Obito targeted Orochimaru while Black Zetsu manipulated Sasuke and Tobi captured Kabuto 399 400 401.

Despite Obito’s combination of Universal Pull and Kamui, Orochimaru resisted through snake-based evasive techniques. He flooded the room with venomous snakes, then activated the base’s oversized self-destruct mechanism to break containment and escape. Obito later acknowledged that Orochimaru had survived and abandoned further pursuit unless he interfered with Akatsuki’s plans 402 403 414.

Appearance

  • Hair: Long, straight, and black 198.
  • Complexion: Characteristically pale; becomes markedly more pallid when his body deteriorates after the Konoha battle 365.
  • Eyes: Slit pupils. His newly possessed female vessel acquires the same cold, snake-like vertical pupils 347 368.
  • Voice: Low and hoarse 167 365.
  • Changing body: Physical appearance depends on his current vessel. By Akatsuki’s attack on his base, he inhabits the body of a young girl 401.

Personality

Orochimaru seeks an unlimited understanding of ninjutsu. Immortality is a means to secure enough time for research, not his ultimate objective. He wants to learn existing techniques, develop new ones, and continually improve himself 160 239 241.

He can be polite, receptive to unusual theories, and easy to converse with, but these qualities do not temper his disregard for consent. He continues research without a subject’s cooperation and conducts dangerous experiments even on a disciple he likes. His work is pursued for himself rather than for the benefit of the ninja world 160 241 310 366.

His independence extends to military decisions. He appreciates Hagoromo’s preference for operating alone and shares the view that unnecessary teammates can reduce efficiency. He evaluates events primarily through their strategic consequences and the techniques they reveal 176 187.

Orochimaru remains composed under severe physical danger because of his extensive familiarity with death. Nevertheless, he distinguishes curiosity from suicidal risk: he avoids directly challenging Hagoromo when possible and refuses to surrender his autonomy to Akatsuki 274 341 367 402.

Abilities & Skills

Ninjutsu Research and Biological Engineering

  • Investigates the relationship between powerful techniques, cellular affinity, and bodily strain through research on the Raikage’s corpse 159.
  • Conducts Wood Release cell-transplant experiments with Danzo’s assistance 240.
  • Successfully modifies a Katsuyu fragment with Hashirama’s cells, granting it Wood Release 282.
  • Recognizes inherited-power awakening as a much larger undertaking than merely improving an infant’s physical potential through weak Lightning Release 241.
  • Experiments on his own bodies, contributing to their rapid deterioration and frequent replacement 365.

Living Corpse Reincarnation

  • Transfers into another person’s body, allowing him to replace a deteriorating vessel 365 368.
  • Has a three-year cooldown; Orochimaru ordinarily changes bodies at roughly that interval 365.
  • Selects vessels for their usefulness rather than their gender 367.
  • Emerges as a large white-scaled serpent during the transfer into his prepared female vessel 367 368.
  • Repeated transfers change his chakra signature, complicating recognition by sensory ninja 339.
  • Delays using Sasuke because he believes the Sharingan has not awakened and cannot readily reproduce its required emotional conditions himself 366.

Impure World Reincarnation

  • Reanimates dead shinobi who retain access to their techniques; this makes Chiyo a potential source of her resurrection technique 362.
  • Requires tissue from the deceased person 366.
  • Uses the First Hokage against Hagoromo and four reincarnated Kage in the battle with the Third Hokage and Danzo 341 372.
  • Cannot freely combine maximum power with reliable control: the First Hokage’s unleashed strength exceeds his ability to restrain him 346 363.
  • Hagoromo’s erasure ability can destroy a reincarnated subject, presenting a threat beyond ordinary physical damage 367.

Cursed Seals

  • Injects dangerous quantities of natural energy into recipients, producing substantial power if they survive 310.
  • The Heavenly Cursed Seal has the greatest power and corrosiveness among his cursed seals 310.
  • Experimental recipients face a death rate exceeding 90 percent 310.
  • Anko is the first successful Heavenly Cursed Seal recipient, but even State One leaves her struggling against its corrosion 310.
  • His cursed seals also contain another person’s chakra 310.
  • He has not personally reached the field of sage arts when questioning Hagoromo during the Chūnin Exams 341.

Snake Techniques and Bodily Modification

  • Uses giant snakes to crush Kirigakure’s stronghold buildings 173.
  • Employs an extreme shedding technique to escape the Reverse Four Symbols Seal, at the cost of severe weakness 364.
  • Softens and contorts his limbs sufficiently to slip out of secure restraints 368.
  • Disperses his body into numerous living snakes to resist Obito’s attempted Kamui capture 402.
  • Summoning: Ten Thousand Snake Net Formation connects an internal alternate space to Ryūchi Cave and disgorges a flood of venomous snakes 402.

Infiltration, Intelligence, and Strategy

  • Uses an Earth Clone to divert Konoha’s pursuit during his defection 244 245.
  • Infiltrates Konoha repeatedly and convincingly impersonates both an Anbu operative and the Fourth Kazekage 282 355.
  • Prepares detection techniques along an escape route to warn him of pursuers 364.
  • Analyzes Obito’s ocular powers during their confrontation, identifying the Mangekyō Sharingan and Rinnegan 402.
  • His intelligence-gathering ability is exceptional, but his wanted status forces him to use caution and disguises in Konoha 275.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Surgical instruments — Keeps numbered scalpels in his underground laboratory for experiments on human bodies 240.
  • Tailed-beast berserk drug — Produces a drug whose stated effect is to make tailed beasts lose control. Hagoromo uses it against Killer B 235.
  • Prepared vessels — Maintains backup bodies for Living Corpse Reincarnation 366 367.
  • Underground hideouts — Includes a reincarnation backup site in the neutral Land of Iron and a larger base in the Land of Rice Fields 366 399 400.
  • Base self-destruct mechanism — Designed to destroy immovable secrets and enlarged with Hagoromo in mind; ultimately used to escape Obito 402 403.

Relationships

  • Kamishiro Hagoromo — Former subordinate, research collaborator, and dangerous acquaintance. Hagoromo protects his research when useful but draws firm boundaries around Shisui and the children under his care. Orochimaru treats him as an equal after the Nine-Tails Incident and seeks to understand his unusual powers 167 241 243 274 341.
  • Hiruzen, the Third Hokage — Teacher who considered Orochimaru his most talented disciple. Hiruzen’s hesitation enables his initial escape; they later fight during the Chūnin Exam conflict 243 372.
  • Jiraiya — Former teammate who repeatedly pursues him with the intention of bringing him back alive. Orochimaru’s defection ends the Three Ninja’s unity 244 245.
  • Tsunade — Former teammate who recognizes the danger of his unrestricted research and orders efforts to locate or drive him away from Konoha 341 353.
  • Shimura Danzo — Secret research partner. Root initially seeks Orochimaru’s death to prevent their collusion from being exposed; Danzo later fights him alongside Hiruzen 240 244 363 372.
  • Yakushi Kabuto — Research assistant and devoted follower who regards Orochimaru as a spiritual anchor. Orochimaru saves him from Hagoromo’s genjutsu and warns him away from the Nine-Tails 365 367 401.
  • Anko Mitarashi — Disciple and first successful Heavenly Cursed Seal recipient. She retains the painful seal because she hopes to use it to track and capture him 310.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — Prospective vessel who willingly leaves Konoha for Orochimaru’s training. Sasuke’s growth under him is substantial, although Orochimaru’s interest in the Uchiha later diminishes 366 371 377 401.
  • Itachi Uchiha — Defeats Orochimaru’s attempted sneak attack through genjutsu; Orochimaru sacrifices his left hand to break free. Itachi’s abilities also make him cautious about targeting Sasuke 282 313 362 365.
  • Obito Uchiha — Attempts to force him back into Akatsuki while claiming to be Madara. Orochimaru resists, destroys his own base, and escapes 401 402 414.
  • Manda — Snake summon. Orochimaru shows no apparent grief when discussing Hagoromo’s killing of Manda, focusing instead on Hagoromo’s sage arts 174 341.

Trivia

  • Konoha and Sunagakure place responsibility for the Chūnin Exam conflict on Orochimaru to avoid a direct war, even though he is not solely responsible for every consequence 373.
  • His connection to Sound Village remains secret enough that Hagoromo initially fails to associate a suspicious Sound examinee with him 339.
  • After escaping Akatsuki’s control, Kabuto decides that returning to Orochimaru is his safest option and takes an object from the enemy laboratory as a prospective gift 428.
