Background / History

The Roger Pirates emerged as the apparent victors after the Rocks Pirates disbanded, with the seas expected to enter an era associated with Roger. His crew later defeated Golden Lion Shiki's forces in the Battle of Edd War, then Roger reached Raftel after circumnavigating the world and became known as the Pirate King 1 3 5.

By the time of his stay on Baterilla Island, Roger was terminally ill and living under a concealed identity with Portgas D. Rouge. Though Garp accused him of coercing Rouge, Roger insisted that their relationship was mutual and genuine; Rouge was carrying their child 14 15.

Figarland Shaya Saint used Roger's impending death and the World Government's likely pursuit of his bloodline to pressure him into accepting Shaya's protection for Rouge and their unborn child. Roger refused to reveal Raftel's location or its secrets even under threat, but offered his technique, Kamui, as part of the bargain 15. Personality

Roger was boisterous, proud, and defiant toward both Marines and the World Government. His long-standing rivalry with Garp did not prevent him from treating the Marine as a familiar equal, while Garp continued to reject the idea that they were friends 14 16.

His greatest vulnerability was his family. Aware that his illness would soon kill him, Roger was willing to negotiate with Shaya and surrender valuable parts of his legacy to secure Rouge and their child's survival 15 18.

Despite this compromise, Roger would not yield Raftel's secrets. He believed that dreams should be pursued personally and directed Shaya to seek the final island through his own effort rather than receive its location outright 15.
