History

War with Konoha

Sunagakure attempted to intercept a Konoha supply convoy under Ebizo and Shūji. The operation failed when Shūji was captured and forcibly controlled by Watanabe Yūske, allowing him to wound Ebizo during the retreat 29 30.

Chiyo responded by calling an emergency meeting, ordering a full reorganization of Sunagakure's deployments and tactics. Intelligence subsequently revealed that Konoha's escort had included several powerful jōnin and that the thread-technique specialist who defeated Shūji was likely Yūske 42 43.

At Sunset Gorge, Chiyo led roughly 3,000 Sunagakure shinobi against Konoha. The village deployed elite jōnin squads to target Yūske and relied on puppet units, poison, and coordinated ninjutsu formations during the battle 44 45. The campaign ended in defeat: Sunagakure retreated to the Land of Wind after suffering major losses, losing supplies, and having over a thousand shinobi captured 47 49.

Reparations and instability

Following its withdrawal, Sunagakure faced severe financial strain. Its wartime funding and reserves had been exhausted, leaving it unable to meet Konoha's demands with ready cash or supplies 54 55.

The final settlement required Sunagakure to provide Konoha with half of its mission-reward earnings for three years, 20% of its mission quota, and free mineral resources. The Third Kazekage also paid to reclaim Shūji's body alongside the prisoners 56.

Renewed conflict and Gaara's accession

After the Third Kazekage disappeared, Chiyo blamed Konoha to consolidate Sunagakure and aligned the village with Iwagakure and Kumogakure for a three-way invasion of the Land of Fire 172 174.

Konoha retaliated by raiding the Sunagakure camp. Yūske's assault destroyed supplies, breached the camp's defenses, and trapped defenders within his Bird Cage technique. Chiyo and Gaara prioritized evacuation while Special Jōnin and other Sand Ninja held the line at great cost 180 181 183 184.

With Sunagakure in chaos, Gaara was appointed Fourth Kazekage. Konoha proposed an alliance and released captured Sand Ninja, including Chiyo, without charge; the two villages formally signed the treaty shortly afterward 189 190.

Alliance era

Under Gaara, Sunagakure provided support to Konoha during the wider war against Kumogakure and Iwagakure 194 203. The village remained economically dependent on mineral extraction, however, with Konoha purchasing its resources rather than providing direct funds 190.

Sunagakure could field only 200 elite shinobi for the anti-@@REF_ENTITY_15229037@@katsuki search operation, rather than the 500 requested from most major villages, because much of its manpower was assigned to mining mineral orders for Konoha 376.

Akatsuki attack and Pakura's leadership

The Akatsuki infiltrated Sunagakure to seize the One-Tail, Shukaku. Their assault killed Gaara, captured Shukaku, and left the village devastated 382 386.

Pakura later became Fifth Kazekage. Under her leadership, Sunagakure remained financially strained and visibly dilapidated, having only been able to make limited repairs to the Kazekage's office after the destruction 450 454. Pakura nevertheless continued to participate in the Five Kage Summit and supported the formation of the Allied Shinobi Forces against the Akatsuki Organization 455 456.

Military Capabilities

Puppet Technique and poison

Sunagakure's senior commanders employ Puppet Technique, with Ebizo and Chiyo recognized as major practitioners.

• Chiyo's forces used newly developed poisons capable of overwhelming Konoha's medical staff until Tsunade could formulate an antidote 37.
