First Appearance Chapter 1

Appearance

Initially, Hiruzen is a middle-aged man who wears the Hokage hat marked with the character for “Fire” 1. After Yūske’s two-year absence, he is visibly diminished by age: his hair has turned partly white, his face is lined, and his formerly energetic bearing has become hunched and unsteady 156.

  • Often seen with a pipe in his office 10 92.
  • Wears formal Hokage robes when intervening in official or battlefield matters 8.
  • His aging becomes increasingly pronounced in his later years 156 407.

Personality

Hiruzen is protective of Konoha’s shinobi, particularly young talent. He personally develops Yūske’s training plan, worries over his injuries, and refuses to hand him to Root despite Danzō’s pressure 4 10 52.

As Hokage, he favors restraint, negotiation, and preserving Konoha’s fighting strength. He delays Tsunade’s medical-ninja reform until wartime resources can support it, organizes reparations rather than prolonging war with Sunagakure, and opposes Danzō’s plan to eliminate the Uchiha indiscriminately 3 52 93.

His compassion is also a weakness. His history with Danzō and Orochimaru leaves him reluctant and pained when forced to act against them; after Danzō’s death, he is overwhelmed by grief, and Orochimaru’s betrayal deeply wounds him 216 328.

Abilities & Skills

Ninjutsu Mastery

Hiruzen’s breadth of knowledge earns him the title “Professor of the Shinobi World.” Even so, Yūske’s String Style initially lies outside his understanding and available records 3 8.

  • Created a tailored training plan for Yūske that included Wind Style techniques and prevented him from taking unnecessary detours in training 4.
  • Taught Yūske the A-rank Mutual Multiplication Explosive Tag technique, while warning him not to use it carelessly 60.
  • Was unable to master the Flying Thunder God Technique himself, making Yūske’s success with it a long-held source of excitement and regret 156.

Five Elements: Great Condensation Technique

Hiruzen can combine Shadow Clones with five chakra natures—Fire, Lightning, Water, Earth, and Wind—to perform the Five Elements: Great Condensation Technique 334.

  • Created multiple Shadow Clones to execute the technique simultaneously 334.
  • Used it to overwhelm Hashirama Senju’s weakened Edo Tensei body and destroy its Wood Golem 334.

Telescopic Jutsu

Hiruzen uses a crystal ball and the Telescopic Jutsu to monitor people and events from afar 4 5.

  • Observed Yūske over several days before deciding how to cultivate him 4.
  • Used surveillance to keep watch over the actions of his disciples 5.

Summoning Technique

Hiruzen can summon Enma in battle 329.

  • Joined Jiraiya in summoning Enma and Gamabunta to counter Orochimaru’s summon, Manda 329.
  • Considers the needs of Enma’s clan when deciding matters involving summoning contracts 57.

Command and Administration

Hiruzen is an experienced wartime commander and political administrator.

  • Personally organized Sunagakure’s surrender negotiations, reparations, prisoner ransom, and Konoha’s redeployment toward the Land of Earth 52 57.
  • Appointed Akimichi Torifu as overall commander of Konoha’s emergency ninja legion during Kirigakure’s invasion 201.
  • Took command on the Land of Lightning front, where his arrival raised Konoha’s morale 203.
  • Emphasizes that a Hokage requires prestige, management ability, and diplomacy in addition to strength 156.

Relationships

  • Watanabe Yūske — Formal master and disciple. Hiruzen takes Yūske into the Hokage lineage, supervises his growth, and eventually passes the Hokage position to him 9 14 156 217.
  • Tsunade — Former student and trusted disciple. He discusses her medical-ninja proposal with her, hopes Yūske will help her recover from grief, and agrees to officiate her wedding to Yūske 3 162.
  • Jiraiya — Former student. Hiruzen frequently has to rein in Jiraiya’s reckless behavior, but relies on him during Orochimaru’s attack on Konoha 5 329.
  • Orochimaru — Former student whose growing distance from Hiruzen becomes a major regret. Hiruzen is devastated by Orochimaru’s betrayal and death 93 328 334.
  • Shimura Danzō — Longtime comrade and political rival. Hiruzen rejects Root’s methods, suspends Danzō for murdering Uchiha shinobi, yet mourns him intensely after Yūske kills him 10 93 216.
  • Uchiha Fugaku — A cautious ally during the Uchiha internal crisis. Hiruzen accepts Fugaku’s information on the coup faction and urges him to lead clan members who value Konoha’s peace 92.
  • Enma — Summoning partner whose clan Hiruzen treats with consideration 57 329.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Recognition of Yūske

During the Second Shinobi World War, Hiruzen notices Yūske’s unusual Thread Manipulation and regrets that the civilian Special Jōnin concealed his potential for so long 3. He prepares Yūske’s training plan, observes his development, and formally accepts him as a disciple after Jiraiya’s test exposes the extent of his String Style 4 8 9.

Hiruzen protects Yūske from Danzō’s attempt to recruit him into Root, explicitly refusing to subject his own disciple to Root’s emotion-suppressing methods 10.

Second Shinobi World War Leadership

Hiruzen supports Konoha’s war effort from the village and later travels to the front lines after Sunagakure’s defeat. He oversees surrender negotiations, demands reparations and ransom for captured Sand ninja, and sends Hatake Sakumo’s force toward the Land of Earth 49 52 57.

He recognizes Yūske as a central figure in Konoha’s victory and believes his disciple may one day become a shinobi capable of sweeping the ninja world like the previous Hokage 49.

Uchiha Crisis and Danzō’s Suspension

When Uchiha Special Jōnin disappear and a coup faction emerges, Hiruzen uses Yūske as a discreet intermediary to meet Fugaku and assess the situation 92. He rejects Danzō’s attempt to solve the problem through unauthorized kidnappings and executions, arguing that destroying the Uchiha would cripple Konoha’s strength 93.

After learning that Danzō had killed Konoha shinobi without permission, Hiruzen strips him of his Hokage Assistant duties, merges Root into Anbu, and confines him to the Shimura compound 93.

Preparing a Successor

Hiruzen gradually trains Yūske not only as a fighter but as a future village leader. After Yūske masters the Flying Thunder God Technique, Hiruzen explains that becoming Hokage requires diplomacy, prestige, and the ability to manage both clans and civilians 156.

He later supports Yūske and Tsunade’s engagement, agrees to officiate their wedding, and begins giving Yūske official documents for review in preparation for succession 162.

Third Shinobi World War

As new war approaches, Hiruzen entrusts Yūske, Tsunade, Jiraiya, and Orochimaru—the “Konoha F4”—with leading Konoha’s war effort 170. He later takes direct command of Konoha’s defense against Kirigakure, appoints Akimichi Torifu to lead an emergency legion, and personally arrives at the Land of Lightning battlefield to reinforce morale 201 203.

After Danzō is killed, Hiruzen asks Yūske whether he wishes to become Hokage. Soon afterward, he steps down due to declining strength and hands the title of Fourth Hokage to his disciple 216 217.

Retirement and Continued Service

Although removed from village internal affairs, Hiruzen remains active as a battlefield commander and senior adviser after Yūske’s accession 217. He later confronts Yūske over the planned abolition of the Elder Council, admitting guilt over his past indulgence of Danzō while warning against excessive delegation of authority 258.

During Orochimaru’s attack, Hiruzen pursues his former student alongside Jiraiya, confronts the reanimated First and Second Hokage, and defeats Hashirama’s weakened Edo Tensei body with the Five Elements: Great Condensation Technique 328 329 334.

Following an attack on Konoha, he resumes work in the Hokage Building to organize compensation, reconstruction, security measures, and public reassurance 346.

Final Years

In his old age, Hiruzen continues to advise Yūske and Minato while reflecting on the consequences of his own leadership 407 408 422. After the Fourth Shinobi World War and a decade of peace, he learns of Hashirama’s final departure and dies peacefully on the Hokage Rock 493.
