Background / History

Jiraiya was a disciple of Hiruzen Sarutobi alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru. Hiruzen regarded him as reckless and frequently caught him peeping at the women’s bath, though Jiraiya remained one of the Hokage’s trusted shinobi. He had no desire to become Hokage, instead dreaming of traveling the world and publishing novels based on his experiences. 5

At Hiruzen’s request, Jiraiya devised a covert test to force Watanabe Yūske to reveal his abilities and test his resolve. Disguised as an enemy shinobi, he ambushed Yūske, but was trapped by String Style and exposed before he could successfully bluff his way out. Hiruzen intervened, and Jiraiya apologized for the incident. 7 8

Jiraiya led a squad consisting of Minato Namikaze, Inuzuka Gakuto, and Chōji Akimichi. He sent them to locate Yūske, later hosted Yūske, Tsunade, and Orochimaru at his home, and encouraged Yūske to strengthen himself for the front lines. 11 13

He later left Konoha and entrusted aspects of Minato’s development to Yūske, acknowledging that Minato and his teammates had continued progressing because of Yūske’s guidance. When he returned, he questioned Yūske’s growing political support and relationship with Tsunade, but accepted Yūske’s assurances and remained concerned that power might change him. 155

After learning that Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan had left Konoha, Jiraiya was devastated. Yūske informed him of the possibility that Nagato’s Rinnegan had belonged to Uchiha Madara and urged him to keep that information secret. 261
