Background / History
Konoha service
Orochimaru is Hiruzen Sarutobi’s exceptionally talented, favored disciple and a senior fellow disciple of Yūske. Alongside Tsunade and Jiraiya, he fights Hanzō during the Second Shinobi World War. Tsunade expels Hanzō’s poison from both men, allowing the trio to continue resisting him 1 20 163 326.
His research already occupies much of his life early in the story: while Tsunade develops antidotes for the front lines, he tests newly developed jutsu in a secret base, records results, and refines his techniques 6.
During the later war, Orochimaru commands the camp where Kakashi, Obito, and Rin are stationed. After Obito disappears, he deduces that the supposed Stone Ninja ambush may have targeted Obito specifically and that Madara may have abducted him rather than killed him 242 243 244.
Yūske’s research patronage
After Danzō’s death, Orochimaru faces a choice between accepting the Fourth Hokage’s patronage and openly leaving Konoha. Yūske fulfills an earlier promise by collecting ninja corpses, arranging a laboratory, and supporting his research 242.
Orochimaru becomes director of the Konoha Research Institute, an underground facility beneath an artificial lake on the village outskirts. Konoha supplies funding, while Orochimaru provides much of the equipment himself or takes it from Danzō’s former research institute. Anbu personnel operate openly inside the facility rather than secretly observing him 260.
Yūske initially requires him not to kill innocents or endanger villagers. Nevertheless, the subsequent Hashirama-cell experiments use dying war orphans supplied for the research. Of sixty subjects, only Yamato survives and develops Wood Style, prompting Yūske to arrange the project’s relocation outside Konoha 260 312.
Staged defection and death
Yūske and Orochimaru plan a false assassination attempt, defection, and death to conceal their research and protect Yūske’s reputation. Orochimaru is to inject the Fourth Hokage with an unknown agent, flee, and apparently die during pursuit by Hiruzen and Jiraiya. Yūske supplies the Eight-Headed Serpent Technique as a possible aid to surviving the performance 313.
The operation begins when Hiruzen discovers Yūske unresponsive beside a discarded syringe. Orochimaru flees toward the Land of Earth, deliberately cutting himself to leave convincing blood and scent trails. He also hopes to implicate Ōnoki, who had repeatedly suppressed him during the previous war 326 328.
During the pursuit, Orochimaru summons Manda and reanimates the first two Hokages. Despite his hostile performance, he deliberately reveals openings and dismisses Tobirama’s reanimation when he fears Hiruzen might actually die. Jiraiya subsequently reports him dead, and a toad carries his apparent corpse back to Hiruzen 329 331 334.
Orochimaru continues working beneath Mount Rishiri in the Land of Water. Yūske later confirms that the assassination and defection were staged and that Orochimaru’s potions had helped him overcome a strength bottleneck 365 381.
Akatsuki captivity
Akatsuki discovers Orochimaru at Yūske’s Land of Water base. Obito and Black Zetsu target him because his research might provide a substitute for the Three-Tails’ chakra, which they cannot obtain directly while Isobu remains inside Yūske 378.
Mount Rishiri is destroyed, and Orochimaru is captured while severely weakened and trapped in genjutsu. Obito also gains control of his assistant. Orochimaru is subsequently made to conduct experiments at Akatsuki’s Land of Iron base 380 389.
Using Yūske’s blood, he attempts to reproduce the Three-Tails’ chakra. Early subjects die from violent rejection or the loss of their life force. His enthusiastic response to the suggestion of abducting Yūske’s relatives makes Obito question whether he is genuinely controlled or merely pretending to be an infiltrator 389.
By the time Shisui supplies intelligence about Akatsuki, Orochimaru has been controlled for ten years. His Edo Tensei becomes a major part of the organization’s military strength, producing former Kage and other deceased shinobi for its campaigns 433 449 450 468.
Liberation and reinforcements
Shisui uses Kotoamatsukami during the operation to end the Edo Tensei forces, and Orochimaru awakens free of the genjutsu. He recognizes that Yūske had kept Shisui available specifically to recover him unharmed. He also reveals that he memorized the experimental data accumulated during his captivity, taking advantage of Akatsuki’s willingness to supply research materials 471 472.
To provide Konoha with an explanation for his actions, Orochimaru requests captured White Zetsu and uses them to reanimate Hashirama and Tobirama as allied reinforcements. He declines to accompany them because his public identity remains awkward, though he acknowledges that Madara’s plan threatens him as well 472 474.
Appearance
- Pale complexion: His face is described as pale or paper-white 313 365.
- Narrow, snake-like eyes: Their distinctive shape is repeatedly emphasized 244 260.
- Long tongue: Licking his lips or extending his tongue is a signature gesture, particularly when curious or excited 244 312 313.
- Hair falling across his forehead: He brushes aside its slightly disheveled strands while speaking with Yūske in his laboratory 365.
Personality
Orochimaru places discovering the world’s secrets above almost everything else. Research can absorb him so completely that he delays greeting Yūske until he finishes his current task. Even while controlled by Obito, discussion of experiments brings out his excitement and thirst for knowledge 260 389.
His treatment of experimental subjects is ruthless. He accepts lethal failure rates, preserves surviving subjects with medication, and eagerly considers obtaining Yūske’s relatives if their bloodlines might solve a research problem. Permission to continue experimenting matters more to him than whether he remains publicly affiliated with Konoha 312 313 365 389.
He is also observant, calculating, and capable of humor. Comfortable research conditions make him more relaxed and willing to joke, while his deductions about Obito impress Yūske. His attachments are not entirely absent: he carefully teaches Anko, intentionally avoids killing Hiruzen during the staged pursuit, and still holds Tsunade and Jiraiya in high regard after his liberation 244 260 312 331 472.
Abilities & Skills
Biological and Kekkei Genkai Research
- Studies other nations’ shinobi bloodline abilities and performs most of the institute’s core experimental work personally 260.
- Previously researched Hashirama’s cells for Danzō; later produces Yamato, a surviving subject capable of Wood Style 260 312.
- Develops potions connected to the power Yūske calls Sage Power, helping Yūske overcome a strength bottleneck 381.
- Preserves three subjects after more than one hundred failures in a later project using Danzō’s experimental data 365.
- Ultimately creates a clone infused with Three-Tails chakra from Yūske’s essence blood, supplying the substitute used in Madara’s completed transformation 481.
- Cannot derive Yūske’s String-String Fruit ability from blood alone; Yūske explicitly notes that the ability is not contained in his blood 365.
Edo Tensei
- Reanimates Hashirama and Tobirama during his apparent defection, then deploys eight former Kage in a later battle 329 449.
- Supplies Akatsuki with deceased shinobi from the Five Great Shinobi Villages, including Katō Dan and Danzō Shimura 468.
- Explains that a sacrifice’s body, soul, and bloodline affect the strength of the revived person 474.
- Enhances White Zetsu sacrifices to Special Jōnin-level strength before reviving the first two Hokages 474.
- Does not always maintain complete control: revived Kage can initially speak independently, and the enhanced Tobirama recognizes that Orochimaru cannot fully restrain him 449 474.
- Cannot explain why Madara remains after the release operation, attributing it to a special method 474.
Snake Techniques and Body Manipulation
- Shadow Snake Hand: Attacks Hanzō after escaping a Water Style restraint 20.
- Myriad Snake Summoning: Expels numerous venomous snakes from his mouth to overwhelm Jiraiya 333.
- Corrosive venom: Spits black venom that burns pits into the ground and releases black smoke 333.
- Body renewal: Crawls from the mouth of his damaged body after being struck by Jiraiya’s Frog Kumite 333.
- Serpentine transformation: Elongates his neck into a snake-headed attack and assumes a snake form to evade blows 333.
- Eight-Headed Serpent Technique: Receives its scroll from Yūske, but the provided account does not explicitly show him mastering it 313.
Summoning
- Summons Manda, a giant snake that demands one hundred living sacrifices as payment 20 329.
- Uses Manda against Hanzō and later against the Konoha pursuit force 20 329.
- Manda can shed its skin and attack from underground, but Hanzō’s salamander poison forces it to withdraw during their earlier battle 20 329.
Other Ninjutsu
- Substitution Jutsu: Replaces himself with a mud figure to evade Jiraiya’s kick 331.
- Wind Release: Wind Cutter Technique: Attacks Jiraiya with a violent cutting gust 331.
- Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique: Multiplies a giant shuriken drawn from a snake’s mouth into a dense airborne barrage 331.
Analysis and Strategy
- Deduces that Obito’s disappearance was a targeted abduction by questioning the ambushers’ strength and their lack of interest in Kakashi and Rin 244.
- Connects Yūske’s arrival with his search for Madara and the earlier Nine-Tails rampage 244.
- Uses deliberate injuries, misleading escape routes, and controlled combat openings to make his staged defection convincing 328 331.
