Background

Tom Riddle grew up isolated in a Muggle orphanage, where he discovered his magic and used it cruelly against other children. His earliest memories include telekinetically hanging another child’s rabbit and breaking a boy’s leg after being insulted; these acts gradually changed from frightening accidents into sources of pride. 178

Dumbledore’s arrival at the orphanage was a formative moment for Tom. He viewed Dumbledore as the first adult “of his own kind” and felt joy at the prospect of escaping the orphanage for Hogwarts. At school, that initial curiosity developed into ambition as he mastered the rules of the magical world. 178

Before becoming a Horcrux, sixteen-year-old Tom created the diary by weaving his memories and personality into a “text version portrait” through advanced Legilimency and mind magic. He later added a soul fragment, producing a Horcrux that could think independently, retain his memories and abilities, and absorb a holder’s life force and magic. 178 268

Murphy Darkholme acquired the diary and deceived its consciousness with fabricated accounts of a future war in which wizards were exterminated by technologically advanced Muggles. Tom’s appearance has changed repeatedly because of his diary-based existence, artificial body, resurrection, and later gender transformation.

As Lucas, he develops a conflicting second identity shaped by friendship, fear of control, and Murphy’s manufactured “savior” narrative.
