Appearance

Soul Beasts have no single anatomy or size. Their natural forms range from ordinary-looking animals to immense, highly evolved creatures such as the Azure Sky Bull Python, whose body spans dozens of meters. 59 233

• Natural forms can include mastiffs, bears, tigers, wolves, swans, dragons, whales, and other beast types.
• Ten-thousand-year Soul Beasts can use Ratio's temporary transformation method to assume humanoid “Orc” forms while retaining features such as fur, animal ears, or other beast traits. 111

Soul Power Cultivation

Soul Beasts cultivate Soul Power over long periods. Their Soul Power remains comparatively pure because it has not been contaminated by externally absorbed soul rings. 60

• A Soul Beast's cultivation age is a major measure of its strength, ranging from hundred-year beasts to Ten-Thousand-Year, Hundred-Thousand-Year, and Ferocious Beasts.
• Ten-thousand-year Soul Beasts possess considerable intelligence; those entering Spirit City are stated to be no less intelligent than humans. 111 234
• Hundred-thousand-year Soul Beasts can be powerful enough to serve as regional overlords or representatives of their kind. 61 71

Self-Produced Soul Rings

Soul Beasts can voluntarily condense Soul Rings without dying, following the method developed by Dr. Ratio. The process requires the unity of spiritual power and Soul Power. 63

• The first successful documented case was the Azure Sky Bull Python producing a 100,000-Year Soul Ring for Xie Yue while suffering only a minor loss of life force. 61 62
• The Soul Power cost is negligible compared with the Soul Beast's total cultivation; maintaining a 100,000-Year ring required the Azure Sky Bull Python's equivalent of only one hundred years of Soul Power. 62

History

For most of Douluo Continent's history, Soul Beasts and Soul Masters were locked in conflict because Soul Masters relied on killing Soul Beasts for soul rings. The Three-Headed Red Demon Mastiff Chieftain considered lasting peace impossible while humans still needed rings and Soul Beasts remained capable of threatening humanity. 57

Dr. Ratio's experiments revealed that conventional soul rings contain the souls and resentment of the Soul Beasts killed to create them. He subsequently entered the Star Dou Great Forest to study how Soul Beasts naturally form rings, beginning with examinations of gathered Soul Beasts under the Azure Sky Bull Python's supervision. 49 58 59

Ratio successfully guided the Azure Sky Bull Python through the production of a 100,000-Year Soul Ring for Xie Yue without killing or seriously injuring the Soul Beast. He then taught the method to the gathered Soul Beasts, fundamentally changing their relationship with Soul Masters. 61 63

The breakthrough led Di Tian to represent Soul Beasts in negotiations with Spirit Hall. Soul Beasts gradually gained access to Spirit City, where they could learn temporary transformation, undergo assessments, receive housing, and eventually move through the city freely. 71 111 116

• Soul Beast Courtyard — A Spirit City residence and training site for Soul Beasts adapting to urban life; residents study city rules and are taught not to harm humans. 154 209
