Origins and Creation
The precise mechanism behind naturally occurring Undead is not understood by the people discussing it in E-Rantel. A widely accepted belief holds that Undead can arise where people die, particularly after unnatural deaths or when the deceased have nobody to mourn them. The Kingdom and Empire therefore agree to solemnly mourn their wartime dead; E-Rantel’s cemetery serves this purpose 85.
Negative Energy provides another route to undeath. Living people who wield Undead power suffer its corrosion: they may deliberately abandon humanity and become Undead, or die from the corruption and rise without self-awareness. Khajit seeks a ritual transformation to escape human limitations 87 92 302.
Undead can also be produced through necromantic spells and specialized rituals. These methods range from creating individual skeletal warriors to converting a living Hero Realm warrior into a Death Knight 90 307.
| Method | Documented example | Conditions or consequences |
|---|---|---|
| Natural emergence | Undead associated with places of death | Unnatural death and lack of mourning are believed to increase the likelihood 85. |
| Deliberate transformation | Crimson-Eyed Duke | Originally human; transformed himself through an unspecified method 389. |
| Negative Energy corrosion | The danger facing living necromancers | Can culminate in death and transformation into an Undead lacking self-awareness 87. |
| Create Undead | Khajit’s Skeletal Warrior | Third-Tier magic consumes several nearby Low-Tier Zombies to produce another warrior 90. |
| Mass necromancy | Undeath Army | Seventh-Tier magic summons roughly a thousand Low-Tier Undead 410. |
| Ritual conversion | Buser’s transformation | Modified Sixth-Tier Create Undead channels battlefield energy through an ancient tower shield 307. |
| Death Knight propagation | Follower Zombies | Victims rise as Undead and can turn further victims into Follower Zombies 307. |
Types and Power Ranks
Local descriptions such as “Legendary Undead” do not always match Tang Zheng’s tier classification. The Death Knight created from Buser is regarded as legendary by its witnesses, but Tang Zheng identifies it as approximately level 35 and technically Mid-Tier 307.
| Type | Documented characteristics |
|---|---|
| Skeletons and ordinary Zombies | Common Low-Tier Undead found in graveyards, ruined countries, and mass necromantic armies 89 182 380. |
| Beast Zombies | Animated wolves, snakes, animals, and monsters; combine Zombie toughness with animal agility 317. |
| Organ Eggs | Corpse-based creatures using exposed organs and weaponized intestines to seize or consume targets 89 306 317. |
| Skeletal Warriors | Third-Tier Undead equipped with swords and shields, with metallic-looking skeletons 90. |
| Spartiate Undead | Shield-and-machete skeletal warriors equivalent to Fifth-Tier heavily armored skeletal warriors 502. |
| Bone Dragons | Flying skeletal dragons capable of nullifying low-tier magic 132 324. |
| Death Knights | Heavily armored warriors with exceptional defense, Follower Zombie creation, and an ability to survive an otherwise lethal attack 307 326. |
| Death Warriors | Greatsword-wielding Undead identified alongside Death Knights as legendary threats; fight more aggressively than Death Knights 724 730. |
| Follower Zombies | Death Knight-created Undead that can retain substantial strength and specialized abilities; the examples encountered have difficulty ratings of 51–54 320. |
| Night Liches | Beings surpassing Elder Liches after absorbing immense magical power; regarded as rare, disaster-level existences 380 607. |
| Vampires | Includes Evileye, whose Undead identity can be concealed through magic items 371 382. |
| Elemental Skulls | Level-68 Undead capable of Ninth- and Tenth-Tier attack magic across four elements 402. |
| Soul Eaters | Named alongside Death Knights as Legendary Undead known for causing disasters 307. |
| Steel Valkyrie | An Undead entity taking the form of a Ghost Ship, commanded by Captain Grelle 720. |
Appearance
- Skeletal forms: Bare or metallic-looking bones, sometimes equipped with armor, cloaks, and weapons 90.
- Corpse-like forms: Rotten flesh, shriveled hands, exposed bone, and scarlet eyes occur among Diyanoch, Cassius Habakuk, and Fanuen 130 381 547.
- Death Knight armor: Black full-body armor, dark crimson markings, spikes at the joints, a horned helmet, and a tattered cape 307.
- Distinctive intelligent individuals: The Saintess of White has wax-white skin and white formal clothing; the Crimson-Eyed Duke favors elaborate jewelry and luxurious dress 389.
- Odor: Large corpse-based hordes spread a strong stench of decay, severe enough to make some Demi-Humans vomit 306.
Behavior and Personality
Attacking the living is described as an Undead instinct. Ordinary Undead in Inveria do not attack Evileye because she is also Undead, while the newly created Death Knight displays intense hatred toward all living beings 307 380.
Intelligent Undead retain individual interests and loyalties. Corpus of the Abyss develops into a secret society centered on knowledge and mutual aid, and Fanuen pursues research with little regard for living subjects. Evileye provides a contrasting example: despite becoming Undead, she still considers herself human and sympathizes with the living 384 409 583.
Undead are not uniformly emotionless. Cassius fears a Dragon Lord, the Abyss researchers become excited by new magical possibilities, and Evileye grieves for her transformed family. They cannot physically cry, however 380 389.
Abilities & Skills
Racial Immunities
The Undead race possesses extensive passive protections 132.
- Immunity to critical hits.
- Immunity to Mental System magic.
- Immunity to Instant Death magic.
- Immunity to negative status effects.
- Complete resistance to sound-based attacks, demonstrated by Spartiate Undead fighting a Frostborn Banshee 502.
These protections allow Diyanoch to evade the curse-based negative effects that disable other Six Arms members 132.
Tireless Bodies
Undead do not suffer fatigue, giving even weak hordes an advantage in prolonged combat 312 317.
- Beast Zombies retain animal agility without the stamina limitations of living animals 317.
- Undead armies do not require food or ordinary living-army logistics 620.
- Ordinary corpse-like Undead are described as lacking pain, although Banezeri experiences agony originating from his soul during a Dragon Lord’s attack 409.
Sensitivity to the Living
Undead are particularly sensitive to the aura of living beings. The Zurrernorn leader uses the reaction of his Death Knight to recognize the arrival of an approaching force 314.
Magical Development
Intelligent Undead can accumulate knowledge over extremely long lives. Cassius spends more than a century becoming a Night Lich, while Fanuen seeks the same rank to gain access to Corpus of the Abyss’s Inner Circle and its knowledge 380 607.
- Corpus’s strongest researcher, the Saintess of White, reaches Eighth-Tier spellcasting 389.
- A cooperative Magic Boost Ritual temporarily enables her to cast Tenth-Tier Summon Undead and produce an Elemental Skull 402.
- This ritual imposes heavy mana expenditure and mental strain; it is not presented as a permanent increase in her normal spellcasting tier 402.
Undead Control
Necromancers can command Undead, but control depends on relative strength 92 130.
- Tang Zheng’s Third-Tier Undead Control costs 15 MP; the number of controlled corpses depends on his level and the level difference between controller and targets 92.
- Diyanoch fails to take over invading Undead because their controller’s spellcasting ability exceeds his own 130.
- Mental resistance does not prevent Undead Control from being considered as an interrogation method against Fanuen 607.
Follower Zombie Creation
A Death Knight can turn its victims into Follower Zombies, whose own victims can also rise as Follower Zombies 307.
- The resulting chain can create an army capable of destroying a country 307.
- Large Undead concentrations may trigger the natural emergence of stronger Undead 307.
- Destroying the originating Death Knight is expected to kill its created Undead or reduce them to ordinary low-tier Zombies without independent consciousness 320.
Weaknesses and Limitations
- Healing magic: Positive-energy healing harms Undead. Kaisel exploits this to severely damage a Death Warrior and repeatedly weaken a Death Knight 730.
- Holy attacks: Angel summons and holy offensive magic are effective counters. Extreme Holy Strike grievously damages Buser’s Death Knight before Holy Hammer finishes it 89 326.
- Fire: A fire-element spell is described as dealing double damage to Undead, though a regenerating collective replenishes the burned outer layer 626.
- Control by stronger necromancers: Undead servants risk being taken over by a superior specialist 92 130.
- Limited ordinary strength: More than half of the Zurrernorn leader’s thousand-strong Low-Tier horde is quickly destroyed by the Demi-Human armies 306.
- Immortality is not invulnerability: Diyanoch is crushed by a Bone Dragon, and the Death Knight and Death Warrior aboard the Ghost Ship are destroyed through coordinated attacks 132 730.
Story Role / Major Arcs

|---|---|
| E-Rantel graveyard battle | Khajit deploys Zombies and specialized Undead against Tang Zheng’s Angels. The battle exposes both mass-horde tactics and necromantic creation methods 89 90. |
| Six Arms invasion | Controlled former estate servants infiltrate the base. Diyanoch’s failed takeover reveals the attacker’s superior magical control 130. |
| Abelion Hills crisis | Zurrernorn uses battlefield deaths to create a Death Knight. Its expanding army exceeds thirty thousand Undead, prompting an elite human expedition and cooperation with Demi-Humans 305 307 312. |
| Attrition campaign | Repeated waves, Bone Vultures, Organ Eggs, and Beast Zombies wear down the expedition’s mana and stamina before the final assault 316 317. |
| Inveria investigation | Tang Zheng and Evileye discover that scattered Undead have been concentrated in the ruined capital by Cassius. Evileye refuses to harm them because they were once her subjects 380 381. |
| Corpus of the Abyss rebellion | Undead researchers employ boosted summons and a sacrificial army against the Deep Darkness Dragon Lord; Banezeri is subsequently destroyed 402 406 409. |
| Draconic Kingdom invasion | Nazarick deploys over a hundred Death Knights and massed lesser Undead, destroys settlements, and drives survivors toward the Royal Capital 619 620. |
| Sorcerer Kingdom expansion | Death Knights and Death Warriors crush the Centaur nation. The Ghost Ship then travels east to advertise Undead labor and spread Ainz Ooal Gown’s faith 720. |
Undead Labor
- Ainz proposes Undead workers as a means of greatly expanding farmland and crop production 717.
- Initial resistance is attributed to commoners’ fear of Undead rather than hiring costs 717.
- Grelle later reports rapid adoption by governors of occupied cities and the use of Undead to clean a ruined Royal Capital 770.
- Controlled Undead do not necessarily attack nearby living beings: Steel Valkyrie’s skeletal crew deliberately keeps its distance from Sebas and Solution 720.
