Background

Abyss founded Corpus of the Abyss roughly four hundred years before the organization’s contact with Evileye. Its original purpose was to connect isolated Undead and prevent conflicts of interest; it later developed into a secret society devoted to knowledge and mutual aid. Its Inner and Outer Circles together numbered only fifty-five members, reflecting both the members’ isolation and the organization’s strict secrecy. 384

Although Corpus of the Abyss preserved magical knowledge and avoided public attention, it eventually fell under the control of a True Dragon Lord. Abyss and the Inner Circle were compelled to answer the Dragon Lord’s summons and feared that any unauthorized action could lead to their deaths. 389

Appearance

Abyss is an imposing two-headed, six-armed Night Lich whose body emits dense Negative Energy.

Personality

Abyss is cautious, secretive, and deeply devoted to magical knowledge. He initially treats Evileye’s approach with suspicion, using detection magic and withholding key information until he can judge the danger to Corpus of the Abyss. 384

His fear of the Dragon Lord coexists with considerable ambition. The prospect of Tenth-Tier Magic overwhelms his composure because he sees it as the Corpus’s first possible route to freedom. Even so, he repeatedly warns the Inner Circle against mistaking a single powerful summon for victory. 384 402

As the rebellion begins, Abyss accepts that survival without resistance is meaningless. When the Dragon Lord destroys the Inner Circle, he dies regretting that his decision brought the allied Vampire and mysterious Undead into the conflict. 403 409

Story Role

Contact with Evileye

After Cassius Habakuk arranges contact, Abyss meets Evileye in a ruined Gothic castle. He confirms that Corpus of the Abyss is controlled by a Dragon Lord and is shaken when she reveals knowledge of Tenth-Tier Magic. 384

Evileye’s questions about Sanctuary lead Abyss to identify a possible alternate name: Buddha Domain or Spirit Mountain, a place associated with worship of the Buddha God. He agrees to review the organization’s records in exchange for the promise of higher-tier magical knowledge. 384 385

Magic Boost and Rebellion

Abyss presents the Magic Boost Ritual to the nine Inner Circle members. While the Saintess of White confirms that the ritual is genuine, she discovers that it lacks the core key required for activation. 389

After Tang Zheng’s side provides the necessary Magic Reinforcement knowledge, Abyss helps the Saintess successfully use the ritual to summon an Elemental Skull. The result gives Corpus of the Abyss hope that Tenth-Tier magic may allow it to oppose its oppressor. 402

Abyss later tells Evileye that the Corpus is prepared to rebel, offering any price for the mysterious lord’s aid. In preparation, the Inner Circle begins transferring its accumulated research and materials outward. 403

Death

Abyss leads Corpus of the Abyss into battle against the Deep Darkness Dragon Lord. The group’s coordinated magic briefly wounds the Dragon Lord, but its strongest summons and defenses prove inadequate. 407 408

The Dragon Lord’s Dark Corrosion Breath annihilates the Inner Circle, bypassing instant-death immunity, destroying magical defenses, and erasing incoming spells. Abyss dies in despair, realizing too late that he had led his organization into a hopeless battle. 409
