Background & History

Early career and the First Great Expedition

Di Lin debuted as a commander at sixteen and became one of the Zichuan Family’s Three Heroes. He initially appeared among Yang Minghua’s faction, where he had infiltrated as a spy, and publicly challenged his former close friend Zichuan Xiu to a duel over Lin Xiujia. 15 29 71

During the Sixth Hengchuan Battle, he annihilated an invading Demon Race regular army, killing more than 70,000 enemies and taking nearly 50,000 prisoners. He ordered every prisoner executed, establishing the brutality that would define his battlefield reputation. 21

His forces subsequently devastated the Demon Race cities of Grank, Kaz, Henglan, and KS Laiqi; many later cities surrendered or opened their gates rather than resist. The First Great Expedition ended with his retreat from Gemara, after which he was celebrated as a God of War and condemned as a cold-blooded madman. His scorched-earth campaign was estimated to have caused 1.8 million civilian deaths. 21 23

Rise in the Inspectorate

After returning to the Imperial Capital, Di Lin allowed his Far East troops to plunder, then restored discipline by ordering the execution of soldiers who remained in the streets. He was appointed Inspector General, a position that brought him thousands of petitions each day. 29 33

As head of the Inspectorate, he oversaw a secret intelligence apparatus that monitored powerful ministers and generals. He also developed a carrier-pigeon communications network capable of quickly relaying border intelligence. 45 99

Following an attack on Zichuan Ning’s residence, Di Lin led the earliest response force, rescued her, and received broad authority to investigate the incident. Within three days, the Inspectorate arrested 112 senior Imperial Capital officials and purged 66 high-ranking military officers as suspects. 129

Rescue mission and Demon Race negotiations

When Sterling disappeared during the Far East campaign, Di Lin personally led more than 30,000 veteran light cavalry into Demon Race territory to find him. His legion traveled by concealed mountain routes, marched at night, deployed scouts extensively, and silenced small enemy patrols to prevent its movement from being discovered. 70

His arrival on the Gray Water River spread panic through Yun Qianxue’s besieging force. Di Lin exploited this fear with an empty-camp maneuver, causing Yun Qianxue to search for a reserve force that did not exist. 71

Posing as the human envoy Gopla, Di Lin entered the Demon Race camp and negotiated directly with Yun Qianxue and the Demon God Emperor. Although his identity was uncovered, he remained composed under interrogation and ultimately secured the Gopla–Yun Qianxue Maple Forest Agreement, ending the war and obtaining the Central Army’s release. 76 78

Defense of the Imperial Capital

During the Demon Race invasion of the Imperial Capital, Di Lin organized a counterattack around the enemy army’s collapse into looting and disorder. He set parts of the city ablaze to trap Yun Qianxue’s forces, then directed cavalry attacks against the disorganized survivors. 208 209

The resulting pursuit continued for more than fifty miles and inflicted severe losses on the retreating Demon Race army. Di Lin nevertheless mourned the cultural treasures lost in the fire while preparing for the city’s likely abandonment and trusting Zichuan Xiu’s promise of western reinforcements. 209 211

After the Battle of Batan, Di Lin warned Sterling that the late arrival of Liufeng Shuang’s Northwest Army could signal a future betrayal. He also identified Military Advisor Black Sand as the Zichuan Family’s greatest remaining threat. 243

Inspectorate regime and civil war

Di Lin later used political intelligence to secure secret agreements with Liufeng Qing and Liufeng Ming, preventing the Liufeng Family’s main forces from reinforcing Liufeng Shuang during Operation Dragon Cavalry. 163

In December 786, an assassination attempt destroyed Di Lin’s escort force. In the ensuing Imperial Capital crisis, the Inspectorate defeated Luobo Minghai’s rebels and took control of the Commander-in-Chief’s Mansion. Di Lin then assumed command of the expeditionary forces, elevated loyal officers, and consolidated authority over the Central Army and state administration. 277 284 287 288

The Lin Family’s seizure of six southwestern provinces forced Di Lin into the Southwest War. His army’s aggressive scouting and raids pressured Heqiu’s forces until both sides signed an armistice on 2 July 786. 292 295 296

His conflict with Zichuan Xiu ultimately became open civil war. To prevent further casualties among both armies, Di Lin accepted a one-on-one duel to determine the conflict’s outcome. He was defeated and injured, after which the Inspectorate surrendered. 309

Di Lin planned for his followers to leave the continent by sea, but he died before the withdrawal could be completed. The remaining Inspectorate troops surrendered to Beastman forces under De Kun. Zichuan Xiu later declared that he did not consider Di Lin a traitor. 313 314

Appearance

Di Lin was tall and slender, with an elegant presence that contrasted sharply with his killing intent and military reputation. His refined, almost feminine beauty often caused observers to underestimate him until they encountered his cold demeanor or martial aura. 15 55 69

  • Fair, snow-white complexion. 15 69
  • Delicate crescent eyebrows, bright expressive eyes, thin lips, and a straight nose. 15
  • Usually composed, soft-spoken, and courteous in formal settings. 55 69
  • Frequently wore the black uniform of an Inspectorate military judge or black armor with a white robe. 70 209 231
  • His presence could become intensely oppressive; even unarmed, he projected enough killing intent to frighten trained guards. 15 125

Personality

Di Lin was defined by contradiction. He could be elegant, gentle, and socially refined, yet he relied on executions, terror, and ruthless discipline to control troops and enemies. His reputation as the Cold-Blooded Asura King came from both his military conduct and the fear he deliberately cultivated. 21 69

He was exceptionally analytical, cautious beneath an outwardly reckless style, and capable of identifying the decisive element in chaotic situations. Yun Qianxue concluded that Di Lin never accepted risks he believed he could not resolve. 71

His loyalty was highly selective but deeply held. He trusted Zichuan Xiu with the safety of Lin Xiujia and their unborn child, risked his army to search for Sterling, and remained a protective elder-brother figure in Zichuan Xiu’s life despite their repeated conflicts. 45 70 169

Di Lin expected absolute obedience from subordinates. He could protect those who fought bravely and obeyed military law, but punished violations of his rules without mercy. 21 33 280

Abilities & Skills

Di Lin was a large-scale campaign commander whose forces were feared for their aggression, discipline, and psychological impact on the enemy. Yun Qianxue considered him competent in every level of command, from strategy to battlefield execution. 71 308

  • Used an abandoned camp to mislead Yun Qianxue into searching for nonexistent reserves. 71

  • Could rapidly eliminate multiple opponents once armed with a sword. 125
  • Possessed killing intent strong enough to intimidate trained fighters before drawing a weapon. 125
  • Was considered powerful enough in martial arts to make a duel with Zichuan Xiu a legitimate deciding contest between two armies. 308 309
  • Ultimately lost the duel to Zichuan Xiu and was badly injured. 309
