Background / History

Peturabo first appears as an unnamed and resentful boy subjected to a daguerreotype session by the mysterious artisan Mors. Despite having only fragmentary memories, he understands ancient languages and fiercely demands knowledge of his identity. When prompted to name the man, he offers insults; Mors ultimately engraves the name Mors—“Death”—onto their photograph and allows him to leave. 1

On Olympia, Peturabo becomes Mors’s apprentice and displays an immediate, intense affinity for metalworking. Steel responds precisely to his strikes, and forging gives him a rare expression of uncomplicated joy. He later chooses his own name in a blood-and-water naming ceremony, declares his intent to unite Olympia, and vows retribution against Kardis for murdering Lokos’s envoy. 16 17 35

After meeting the Emperor and Horus atop Mount Tylephos, Peturabo accepts that he is one of the Emperor’s Primarch sons and chooses to join the Imperium. He subsequently assumes command of the Fourth Legion, renames it the Iron Warriors, and restructures it around ability, logistical support, engineering, artillery, and collective responsibility. 57 58 68

Appearance

Peturabo is a towering Primarch with a severe, youthful majesty. Even as an adolescent he grows to nearly three meters tall; later descriptions emphasize a body and bearing likened to iron, mountains, and forged steel. 52 68

  • Black hair, at times crowned with a platinum laurel. 68
  • Azure, icy eyes. 68
  • Usually wears iron-colored robes with precise golden patterns and ancient Olympian characters engraved on his wristbands. 68
  • Uses black-and-yellow striped war-plate, designed to function like a second skin. 133
  • Shaves his head and installs metal ports for neural interfaces, concealing the connections beneath hair-like data cables. 158 203
  • Can operate through a mechanical body when his complete self is elsewhere. 234 297

Personality

Peturabo is exacting, analytical, and proud of his work. He instinctively searches for hidden patterns, weaknesses, and implications—even in ordinary conversation—and struggles to stop himself from over-interpreting Rogal Dorn’s bluntness. Criticism of his craftsmanship or Legion can provoke genuine anger, though he consciously cultivates a controlled, stern demeanor. 121 122

He views war, construction, and governance as related acts of shaping raw material into a deliberate form. He values efficiency, precision, preparedness, and the conservation of resources; indiscriminate destruction is wasteful unless strategic necessity demands it. 66 348

Despite his austere reputation, Peturabo cares deeply about his homeworld, his Legion, and his brothers. He questions whether his warriors truly accept dangerous missions, personally recognizes Dantioch’s suffering and achievements, and refuses worship or claims of divinity. 176 366 396

Abilities & Skills

Superhuman Analysis and Strategic Modeling

Peturabo can rapidly construct detailed mental models from minimal information and identify the structural weaknesses of complex defenses.

  • Analyzes enemy physiology, armor functions, unit relationships, and battlefield urgency almost instantly. 64
  • Maps the energy-core junctions and defensive vulnerabilities of the Black Judgement within seconds, then directs the Iron Warriors’ assault accordingly. 66
  • Processes strategic information on a scale comparable to the work of an entire Astartes Great Company. 500
  • His need to personally control every part of a campaign can leave him without rest during major operations. 357

Engineering and Forging

Peturabo is an exceptional smith, architect, inventor, and military engineer.

  • Shapes steel with extraordinary precision and forges weapons, including work undertaken to honor Konrad Curze’s legacy. 16 269
  • Designs fortresses, shipyards, orbital infrastructure, planetary defenses, memorial systems, and the Iron Warriors’ logistical organization. 68 115 219
  • Creates flexible neural data cables after studying brain-machine interface technology; the cables enable faster information processing and precise fleet control. 158 203
  • Designed or personally contributed to sculptures displayed in the Iron Warriors Memorial Hall, whose development reflects his evolving artistic philosophy. 308

Legion Command

Peturabo leads the Iron Warriors as a unified military-engineering force rather than a collection of independent warriors.

  • Establishes a hierarchy of Grand Battalions, battalions, companies, centuries, squads, artillery, engineers, communications personnel, and logistical detachments. 68
  • Declares that Legion honor and shame are collective, and that Warsmith and Trident appointments are determined by ability rather than seniority. 68
  • Treats his Legion’s soldiers as extensions of his own mind during battle, coordinating them with interlocking precision. 66
  • Is reluctant to seek outside aid, but does so when the Xerud campaign exceeds what the Iron Warriors can resolve alone. 353

Combat Ability

Peturabo is a formidable close-combatant whose preferred weapon is a warhammer.

  • Wields a warhammer against bio-servitors and uses battlefield debris and enemy bodies defensively when necessary. 65
  • Calculates terrain, atmosphere, armor, and weapon performance before combat engagements. 133
  • Regards tactical withdrawal as a valid military tool distinct from surrender or submission. 271
  • His battle visions portray him as a colossal warrior and conqueror driven by iron, blood, victory, and the image of an Iron Throne. 47

Artificial Bodies and the Iron Circle

Peturabo develops artificial constructs and alternate bodies to extend his presence and operational reach.

  • Creates the Iron Circle, constructs identical in appearance to him but not independently powerful. 221
  • Uses mechanical bodies when his complete self is occupied elsewhere, including during operations connected to the Webway. 234 297
  • Employs neural links to control systems within his workshop and fleet infrastructure. 203 219

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Warhammer — his favored weapon; Mors enhances or inscribes it, and Peturabo repeatedly associates it with his personal style of command and warfare. 121 133
  • Neural-linked armor — customized Primarch armor designed for precise control and sensory support. 65 133
  • Hair-like data cables — neural interfaces installed through metal ports in his skull, used for direct machine and fleet control. 158 203
  • Hand cannon — used to kill Number Eleven and temporarily seal the dark forces beyond the opened passage. 462
  • Iron Circle — artificial constructs modeled after Peturabo, used as assistants and extensions of his presence. 221
  • Ironclad — his flagship and the site of his principal workshop, command spaces, and Stone Masons’ Club. 208 418

Relationships

  • Mors — mentor, ancient artisan teacher, adviser, and trusted companion. Their relationship begins in hostility but develops into enduring mutual reliance; Mors repeatedly mediates Peturabo’s conflicts and warns him against destructive futures. 1 17 56 121
  • The Emperor — father and creator. Peturabo accepts the Emperor’s cause, later learns troubling details about the Primarchs’ original purpose, and is appointed Warmaster by him. 58 462 446
  • Calipha — Tyrant of Lokos and Peturabo’s political partner in developing Olympia and supporting the Iron Warriors’ manufacturing base. 68 498
  • Rogal Dorn — brother, engineering collaborator, and frequent rival. Their relationship begins with hostility and physical conflict but grows into direct, productive cooperation and mutual trust. 121 122 127 514

  • Barabas Dantioch — Iron Warrior son, Warsmith, later Warmaster and one of Peturabo’s Tridents. Peturabo deeply values Dantioch’s endurance, intelligence, and service. 366 500
  • Roboute Guilliman — brother and collaborator in technology, administration, architecture, and memorial design. Guilliman is initially suspicious of Peturabo’s duplicate appearances before learning of the Iron Circle. 203 219 221
  • Angron — brother and trusted associate despite disagreements. Peturabo consults with him on Legion matters and later seeks his support for the planned assault on the Imperium. 178 500
  • Lorgar Aurelian — brother whose faith and extremism trouble Peturabo. As Warmaster, Peturabo confronts Lorgar after the burning of Colchis and later faces his opposition. 396 453 461
