Background / History

Mors spent thousands of years on Olympia, watching its civilizations rise and fall. He preferred isolation, inanimate materials, and unfinished art to ordinary social life, considering himself a failed craftsman without grand ambitions. 5 53

Although he is called Mors from the beginning of the story, he later identifies the name as one Peturabo gave him. In events connected to Moro, he is also addressed as Remus. 60 483 492

On Olympia, Mors encountered the young Peturabo and judged him to be an unfinished creation. Rather than destroy him, Mors forcibly “reforged” him by unlocking three restraints: one obscuring the source of Peturabo’s fear, one suppressing his growth and physique, and one concealing excessive knowledge until his mind could mature. Mors deliberately preserved Peturabo’s essence and expected the locks to break naturally over time. 3

He became Peturabo’s craftsman-teacher and eventual mentor, training him through psychic workshops, riddles, practical trials, and harsh criticism. Mors ultimately remained on Olympia because he believed Peturabo still needed to be reforged. 12 14 17

During Harkon’s coup, Mors unleashed a planet-wide purge against the rebels and Chaos-corrupted forces. The conflict cost him his physical body; afterward, he continued as a void-like being using crafted shells, projections, and rune-bound vessels. 45 46 51

Appearance

Mors regularly changes or reconstructs his body, clothing, and outward form. His most familiar appearance is that of a pale, black-haired man in dark robes and black cloth wrappings, though he can manifest as a runic void, a translucent projection, or a locally adapted shell. 5 28 51 71

  • Messy, medium-length black hair in his early Olympian form. 5
  • Pale face, dark eyes, and black cloth wrapped around his hands and body. 28
  • After losing his body, his face becomes a void concealed beneath a black sack or hood. 51
  • Golden runes flow over his void-form and temporary shells. 53 76
  • Frequently adopts local clothing, including Olympia-style robes, Prospero robes, Baalite desert garb, and Barbarus gas masks. 71 107 317 328

Personality

Mors is detached, sarcastic, and frequently dismissive of social conventions. He prefers talking to objects, making art, reading, or observing others over participating in ordinary human affairs. 5 22 113

Despite this apathy, he is patient when teaching and can be fiercely protective of those he considers his responsibility. His mentorship of Peturabo relies on provocation, difficult lessons, and manipulation rather than reassurance; Mors later admits that his influence made Peturabo insecure and tethered to him. 9 14 129

He values craftsmanship, independent thought, and the ability to ask directly for what one wants. He distrusts easy glory, divine narratives, prophecy, and unexamined authority. 28 29 311

Mors is capable of extreme ruthlessness when confronting corruption or threats to his objectives, including killing rebels, extracting souls, erasing memories, and purging Chaos-tainted beings without mercy. 39 45 46

Abilities & Skills

  • Designs and maintains temporary bodies, shells, and constructs for himself and Peturabo. 70 88 100

Shell Construction and Remote Manifestation

After the destruction of his physical body, Mors relies heavily on crafted vessels.

  • Can abandon a shell and communicate through projections. 55
  • Left Peturabo a younger-looking shell through which they could communicate and visit each other. 70
  • Built shells with emergency self-destruction functions that can return Peturabo’s consciousness across interstellar distances. 88
  • Cannot simply divide his soul into multiple fully independent bodies without destroying his internal structure. 434
