First Appearance Chapter 71

Background / History

Magnus arrived on Prospero as a crimson-skinned child of extraordinary growth, intellect, and psychic sensitivity. He became Tizca's foremost scholar, expanding the Great Library's collections and teaching the proper observation and use of Aether. Before meeting his brothers, he had already saved Tizca from Soul-Devouring Bees by incinerating the swarm with Aetheric fire. 71 72 73

His first meeting with Peturabo took place at the Great Library of Tizca. Magnus received his younger brother warmly, guided him through the library, discussed prophecy and Aetheric research, and showed particular interest in Mors's unusual spiritual form and temporary vessels. 72 73 75

After experiencing the Warp's dangers, Magnus became terrified of psychic energy and attempted to end all Aether research on Prospero. He abandoned plans for six academies and a pyramid, ordered the city's psychic studies erased within nine years, and withdrew from his colleagues. 80 83 His fear was later revealed to have been exacerbated by a sapphire-glass feather embedded in his subconscious; removing it restored his psychic ability and clarity. 89

When Tizcan scholars betrayed him and a Tzeentchian ritual endangered Prospero, Magnus fought through the collapse of the Great Library and the resurgence of the Soul-Devouring Bees. Mors taught him spellwords, which he used to destroy the psychic furnace threatening the planet. To eradicate the remaining infestation and Warp furnaces, Magnus sacrificed his right eye as the price of a large-scale incantation, cleansing Prospero with crimson-gold fire. 91 92 97 98

On Terra, Magnus accepted command of the Fifteenth Legion and reflected openly on his former pride and failures. He named and led the Thousand Dust Suns while continuing his scholarly work, military development, and regulation of psychic practices. 103 115

During the later Webway crisis, Magnus used the Tutemuns Rune, Tarot, psychic shields, and his own endurance to pursue threats through the Webway. He killed the Chaos-corrupted Omegon in a fratricidal battle, then guided stranded Iron Warriors to safety and carried the Emperor's remaining light toward Uigebealach as darkness associated with the Dark King spread through the Webway. 463 464 465 466

Appearance

Magnus is an exceptionally tall Primarch with a scholar's bearing rather than an overtly martial presence. His crimson or pearl-red skin, dense red hair, and multicolored eyes make him visibly distinct even among his brothers. 72 290

  • Smooth crimson skin, described as resembling molten violet-bronze or pearlescent red. 72 290
  • Thick red hair, at times braided into three long strands; later styled in copper-wire-like braids. 80 85 454
  • Eyes that shift through multiple colors and can shine gold; he later sacrifices an eye more than once in the course of using powerful magic. 72 98 442
  • Commonly wears parchment-colored robes, gold-and-blue jewelry, and a feathered gold crown. 72
  • Usually goes barefoot in private spaces, but uses heavy protective clothing, boots, gloves, and respirators on toxic Barbarus. 75 322 323
  • Carries a thick, gold-edged combat record book or Codex, often secured at his waist. 131 463

Personality

Magnus is intensely curious, scholarly, and eager to share what he learns. He values knowledge as something to preserve and distribute, whether through libraries, academies, battlefield exchanges, or formal research. His enthusiasm can make him socially clumsy or overbearing, but he generally approaches others with sincerity. 73 111 323 384

His relationship with psychic power is conflicted. Though one of the Imperium's greatest psychic masters, he has witnessed Aether's corruption firsthand and repeatedly seeks safer, more regulated ways to use it. His fear can become extreme—once leading him to demand the end of all psychic research on Prospero—but he ultimately accepts that psychic knowledge must be handled responsibly rather than simply abandoned. 80 83 89 322 323

Magnus is emotionally vulnerable beneath his stature and power. Peturabo's apparent death, the betrayal of Tizca's scholars, and Prospero's suffering drive him toward guilt and self-reproach. He nonetheless repeatedly chooses responsibility: saving his world, leading his Legion, healing his brothers, and entering the Webway alone to protect humanity. 91 98 103 435 463 466

Abilities & Skills

Psychic Mastery

Magnus possesses exceptional command of Aetheric and psychic energy, including perception, telekinesis, shielding, mental intrusion, and the manipulation of Primal Winds.

  • Observes the Ocean of the Vast and commands its changing tides and Primal Winds. 73

Temporal Manipulation

Magnus can slow time on a small scale and has attempted far greater temporal effects under extreme pressure.

  • Previously used localized time-slowing to support research. 92
  • Slowed time during the Soul-Devouring Bee catastrophe, buying himself time to contest the Tzeentchian ritual and protect Tizca. 92
  • The extreme expenditure of such magic strained his soul and caused dangerous temporal side effects. 92 96

Spellwords and Runes

After Mors trained him in spellwords, Magnus combined psychic talent with incantatory magic capable of altering reality.

  • Learned basic spellword formation from Mors while dismantling the psychic-energy furnace on Prospero. 97
  • Used a sacrificial spellword working to cleanse Prospero, destroy Soul-Devouring Bees, and collapse hostile Warp temples. 98

  • Developed and applied the Tutemuns Rune of psychic suppression. 377 435
  • Modified Tutemuns' formation amid the Webway's darkness to create a route toward Uigebealach. 466

Healing and Soul Work

Magnus can apply psychic and runic knowledge to injuries affecting both body and soul.

  • Successfully healed Peturabo after the Nightmare Sun marked his soul, using the Tutemuns Rune alongside Mors's assistance. 435
  • Can perceive and work through psychic injuries and hostile energy absorption. 435
  • States that he can regrow a sacrificed eye. 99

Constructs and External Shells

Magnus can create temporary Aetheric constructs and operate miniature external forms.

  • Enlarged a wristband into a temporary transport platform for Peturabo. 75
  • Created temporary material shells, though stable shells proved difficult for him to produce. 100
  • Uses miniature versions of himself with additional activation mechanisms for remote interaction. 377

Combat and Strategy

Though primarily a scholar, Magnus developed into a capable combatant through direct experience, rune enhancement, and study.

  • Defeated Leman Russ in an unarmed arena match after preparing enhancement runes. 109
  • Maintains written battle summaries and combat diagrams after engagements. 131
  • Coordinates psychic warriors and specialist schools within the Thousand Dust Suns. 111
  • Fought and killed the Chaos-corrupted Omegon alone in the Webway, using runes, manifested weapons, battlefield analysis, and his Codex. 463 464
