Background / History

Nan Huairen serves as an emissary of the Washing Yan Ancient Sect's Outer Hall. Though his aptitude is described as average rather than exceptional, he is sociable, tactful, and widely acquainted with ordinary disciples of the Nine Sacred Demon Gate through his duties. He is the disciple of Protector Mo and is favored by his grand-ancestor, Elder Sun. 3 7 32

He initially regards Li Qiye as an unpromising and possibly reckless new Chief Disciple. Li Qiye's calm response to the marriage-alliance assessment and his diligence with the Mystic Gate Saber begin to change Nan Huairen's opinion. 4 7

During the visit to the Nine Sacred Demon Gate, Nan Huairen repeatedly tries to keep Li Qiye out of conflict. He is embarrassed by Li Qiye's behavior around the Four Symbols Stone Men, attempts to defuse Du Yuanguang's accusation, and seeks Protector Mo when Li Qiye insists on dueling Du. 8 9

Li Qiye's victories over Du Yuanguang and Xu Hui, his passage through all fourteen levels of the Chaotic Heart Forest, and his connection to the stone guardians overturn Nan Huairen's assumptions. He comes to believe that Li Qiye's seemingly outrageous confidence is justified. 10 16 20

After returning to the Washing Yan Ancient Sect, Nan Huairen and Protector Mo choose to stand with Li Qiye rather than the Six Elders. Nan Huairen pledges to follow Li Qiye's orders “through fire and water.” 23 24

His standing rises after Li Qiye grants him and Protector Mo authority to communicate directly with Chief Protector Yu He of the Nine Sacred Demon Gate. They become special envoys in dealings between the two sects. 40 42

Personality

Nan Huairen is smooth-talking, observant, and politically aware. He is skilled at reading situations and weighing consequences, often serving as Li Qiye's source of information on sect affairs, factions, personnel, and the Nine Sacred Demon Gate. 7 25 43

He is cautious by nature and initially interprets Li Qiye's actions as dangerous arrogance. Even while worried or embarrassed, however, he does not abandon Li Qiye and gradually develops deep trust in him. 8 12 20

His deference to Li Qiye becomes increasingly sincere after his pledge of allegiance. He remains somewhat evasive and overly formal when giving opinions, a habit Li Qiye openly criticizes. 24 43
