Background / History

The Nine Sacred Demon Gate was founded by the Nine Sacred Great Sage, formerly the foremost general of Immortal Emperor Mingren. While serving Mingren, the Great Sage helped sweep through the Nine Realms and made major contributions to Mingren's attainment of the Heaven's Mandate. The gate once maintained close ties to the Washing Yan Ancient Sect, paying homage when that sect ruled an ancient kingdom. 4 19

The Nine Sacred Great Sage established a marriage-alliance promise between his lineage and the Washing Yan Ancient Sect. By the present era, the gate regards the declining Washing Yan Ancient Sect as an unequal partner, but continues to recognize the agreement in principle. 7 13

The sect's founder was originally a pheasant that attained the Dao. His boast, “Heavenly Demon, Only I,” became the inscription sealing the Sacred Cave; Li Qiye's old taunt, “A Mess of Feathers,” was the matching phrase required to open it. 21 22

Guardian Deities

The Four Symbols Stone Men stand at the four corners of the dueling ground. Each is a hundred zhang tall and was placed there to guard the sect's terrestrial vein of Heaven and Earth Essence. 8 18

The stone men were originally retrieved from the Old Earth by Li Qiye during his time as the Shadow Crow. He later lent them to the Nine Sacred Great Sage in recognition of the Great Sage's service to Immortal Emperor Mingren; they were meant to protect the gate in an existential crisis, not to act as its descendants' private enforcers. 19

Marriage Alliance Assessment

After learning that Li Qiye had become the Washing Yan Ancient Sect's chief disciple, the gate demanded an assessment, expecting his mortal qualifications to end the ancestral marriage-alliance arrangement. 4 7

The gate conducted three rounds: the Chaotic Heart Forest trial, a talent and martial examination, and a decisive battle. Li Qiye reached the fourteenth level of the forest twice, disproving accusations that he had used a treasure to cheat. 13 15 16

Conflict at the Dueling Ground

The gate's disciples openly despised Li Qiye and the proposed alliance. Du Yuanguang challenged him and was killed in a single strike by the Mystic Gate Saber. 7 10

Xu Hui then challenged Li Qiye in the martial examination. Li Qiye defeated and killed Xu Hui with the Snake-Beating Cudgel, after which Protector Xu, Yu He, and the Grand Elder attempted to intervene. The Four Symbols Stone Men stopped them. 17 18

Sacred Cave Opening

Following the guardian incident, the Sun-Turning Demon Emperor invited Li Qiye to open the founder's Sacred Cave in exchange for a reward. Li Qiye succeeded, claimed an ancient box, and left the remaining treasury for the gate. 19 21 22

The Sun-Turning Demon Emperor subsequently invited Li Qiye to remain at the Nine Sacred Demon Gate. Li Qiye refused, affirming that he would remain a disciple of the Washing Yan Ancient Sect. 22

• The gate's younger disciples regarded Li Shuangyan as their “goddess” and strongly opposed her prospective marriage to Li Qiye. 8 13
