Background / History

Marginalization and the Coup Crisis

After Madara Uchiha left the village, his follower Setsuna continued attempting to seize power through force. Hiruzen Sarutobi defeated him but permitted him to remain the leader of the Uchiha Hawk Faction—a situation Setsuna regarded as humiliating 35.

The Night of the Nine-Tails deepened the separation between the clan and Konoha. An unfamiliar Sharingan controlled the beast, and the Uchiha were subsequently suspected, slandered, and relocated to a remote part of the village. The relocation also cost them extensive property, reducing a formerly wealthy clan to barely maintaining its operations 2 45.

By the opening chapters, resentment is pushing neutral members and doves toward the hawks. Shisui approaches Kazuna for help preventing an impending coup, while Kazuna argues that Hiruzen’s reassurances and Danzō’s attacks work together to weaken the clan 1 2.

Kazuna’s Rise and Reforms

Although publicly retired after a wartime scandal, Kazuna retains substantial influence among younger Uchiha. His supporters Tekka and Inabi initiate a Clan Council, where Yashiro proposes doubling the Military Police Force and creating a deputy office linked to the position of Vice Clan Leader 1 4 5.

Kazuna secures the deputy positions while Fugaku retains the formal leadership. His reforms change the clan’s barriers, sentries, and patrols; redirect police activity away from minor disputes; distribute new ninjutsu; and provide financial support for vulnerable clansmen. The reforms win broad cooperation and leave Kazuna exercising the clan’s real authority 9 10 11 35.

Open Conflict with the Hokage Faction

An assassination attempt against Kazuna escalates the dispute into an open confrontation. Itachi reports that Danzō’s side obtained information about clan defenses and encouraged him to help exterminate every Uchiha, including civilians. The clan cuts off contact with Konoha, and Fugaku leads a departure amid accusations of discrimination 17 29.

Obito later infiltrates the clan grounds undetected, exposing compromised barrier and sensor personnel. Fugaku takes charge of internal security with assistance from the elders 37.

Danzō’s attack on Shisui triggers another crisis. Fugaku brings the Military Police Force to arrest Danzō, while Yashiro demands an explanation from Hiruzen. Kazuna subsequently obtains 100 million ryo from the Hokage, strengthening the clan’s finances and morale 72 73 76.

Withdrawal Announcement and Political Ascendancy

The Uchiha become one of Konoha’s three major political factions and hold the initiative over both the Acting Hokage’s faction and Hiruzen’s allied clans. Their battlefield reliability also earns appreciation from shinobi who otherwise dislike them 106 135.

When village leaders plan to send Uchiha shinobi to the border against Sunagakure to weaken the clan, Fugaku’s leadership group decides to send the entire clan—including children—as its response 121.

Kazuna later announces another withdrawal from Konoha, citing hostility and a lack of belonging. The Aburame support the decision, while Uchiha votes help elect Tsunade. Village leaders calculate that the combined departure would cost nearly two thousand ninja and at least fifty Jonin 187 188.

The clan subsequently remains central to Konoha under Kazuna’s rule as Hokage. Itachi becomes Military Police Head and Vice Clan Leader, and Shisui is appointed Hokage Assistant 194 220.

Later Wars and Postwar Duties

Under Kazuna, the clan supplies elite fighters for battles against other villages and the Ten-Tails. Its members fight against fellow Uchiha such as Obito and Madara rather than treating shared ancestry as an overriding allegiance 182 342 354 364.

During the later conflict, Kazuna’s cooperation with Hashirama and Tobirama contrasts with the historical Uchiha–Senju rivalry. Itachi also maintains a covert relationship with Hiruzen on Kazuna’s instructions, helping preserve an intelligence channel into the enemy camp 315 316 341.

Afterward, Kazuna assigns the battle-hungry clan to a pursuit guard tasked with hunting rogue ninja and remnants. He also seeks to restrain Uchiha complacency by encouraging the development of other powerful clans 378 402.

Organization & Leadership

Clan Council

  • Meeting place: Naka Shrine, a secret gathering site 4.
  • Participation: Possession of the three-tomoe Sharingan automatically grants council attendance rights because it represents Jonin-level strength 4.
  • Convening authority: Initially restricted to three people; Tekka and Inabi’s request succeeds through elder approval 4.
  • Power structure: Early deliberations involve three major factions. Kazuna’s rise adds an emerging faction to the leader’s faction, hawks, and doves 3 36.

Principal Offices and Members

Member Position / Function
Uchiha Kazuna Vice Clan Leader and Military Police Deputy Head, then Clan Leader and Hokage; directs reforms, military development, and succession planning 11 134 194 355.
Fugaku Uchiha Initial Clan Leader; later manages internal affairs, patrols, hidden sentries, and barriers. As former leader, warns the elites against overconfidence 4 46 256.
Itachi Uchiha Appointed Vice Clan Leader and Military Police Head; Kazuna’s chosen heir and intended successor as Hokage 194 355 377.
Shisui Uchiha Initially an ANBU member concerned with preventing a coup; later Hokage Assistant and a leading genjutsu specialist 1 24 194 354.
Setsuna Uchiha Hawk Faction elder, former follower of Madara, and Kazuna’s grandfather; assists and checks Fugaku’s administration 3 35 46.
Sougi Uchiha Dove Faction representative; assists and checks Fugaku in internal affairs 5 46.
Yashiro Uchiha Military Police Squad Captain with strong analytical and leadership skills; a key supporter of Kazuna’s rise 4 5.
Tekka and Inabi Uchiha Former Fugaku supporters who shift to Kazuna and help initiate the council challenge 4.

Military Police Authority

  • The Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju, established the force specifically for the Uchiha 9.
  • The clan controls appointments and dismissals, needing only to report them to the Hokage 9.
  • Kazuna discovers that its authority also includes execution rights and the ability to expand its forces 66.
  • His administration deliberately reduces intervention in petty disputes while developing more selective, courteous dealings with villagers 25 66 67.

Culture & Reputation

Strength is the foundation of authority within the clan. Kazuna finds that force persuades its members more effectively than lengthy arguments; when he pressures the council with his Mangekyō, many respond with excitement rather than resentment 10.

The clan’s pride also shapes its ranking practices. Before Kazuna’s reforms, Uchiha were classified as Chunin or Jonin rather than Special Jonin, even though that intermediate rank existed elsewhere in Konoha 192.

Earlier police conduct is arrogant and uncompromising: members arrest offenders without accommodating pleas, tears, or requests for favors. Kazuna replaces that approach with politeness and less intrusive enforcement. The first forced smiles frighten villagers, but later assistance and recovered stolen belongings improve the clan’s reputation 20 25 66 67.

Its growing influence creates new problems. Members become intensely protective of the Hokage position, and Fugaku warns that Kazuna’s strength does not make the clan invulnerable. Even Kazuna’s chosen succession is complicated by competing family and follower interests 212 256 377.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Dōjutsu

  • Three-tomoe Sharingan: Associated with Jonin-level strength and council eligibility 4.
  • Technique copying: Kazuna expects members to share learned ninjutsu through copying, although the clan still encounters training difficulties 34.
  • Emotion-linked growth: Intense emotions can alter Uchiha chakra and produce greater power; hatred and pain are not the only possible triggers 352.
  • Mangekyō awakening: Normally involves extreme negative emotions, intense desire, and special chakra stimulating the brain. Its abilities reflect the wielder’s inner wishes 60.
  • Further evolution: Eternal Mangekyō and Rinnegan are attained by individual members, not automatically by the clan as a whole 257 367 368.
  • Limitations: Mangekyō use carries serious side effects, which concern the clan’s core leadership 36 39 60.

Genjutsu

  • Very few Uchiha are unable to use genjutsu 354.
  • Shisui is exceptional even within the clan; Tekka and Inabi together cannot match him in this field 354.
  • Kazuna uses ocular genjutsu to control tailed beasts and jinchuriki with a glance 261.
  • Shisui is selected to replace Jiraiya against Orochimaru because that opponent’s current condition makes genjutsu especially threatening 354.

Fire Release and Combined Ninjutsu

  • Fire Release is prominent in the clan’s battlefield arsenal 342.
  • Its elite forces deploy mid- to high-level techniques such as Great Fire Annihilation, Dragon Fire, and Majestic Annihilation 342.
  • A massed barrage involving the Uchiha and other allied fighters burns the Ten-Tails and forcibly shatters Madara’s Susanoo 342.

Susanoo and Forbidden Techniques

  • Mangekyō users including Kazuna, Fugaku, and Shisui possess Susanoo 46 72 364.
  • Shisui activates Susanoo despite having lost an eye to Danzō 72.
  • Izanagi allows two Uchiha involved in Itachi’s covert operation to survive death, at the cost of one eye each 315.
  • The Totsuka Blade’s sealing power is demonstrated by Kazuna; it is an individual weapon rather than standard clan equipment 289.

Elite Combat and Coordination

  • Uchiha shinobi are repeatedly described as capable of fighting two opponents of the same rank 17 111.
  • Their coordinated counterattack repels a sudden assault on Kazuna and his guards 182.
  • Their strength and willingness to fight at the front make them valued battlefield comrades 135.
  • The clan has relatively few Genin, with more than half its shinobi described as Chunin 111.

Resources & Territory

  • Clan grounds: Relocated to a remote corner of Konoha after the Night of the Nine-Tails 2.
  • Defensive systems: Dedicated barriers, sensor personnel, patrols, and hidden sentries; reorganization follows both leaked information and Obito’s infiltration 9 17 37.
  • Ninjutsu library: Kazuna supplies more than one hundred scrolls collected during the Third Shinobi World War, including techniques taken from enemy and hostile Konoha shinobi 10.
  • Welfare funding: Kazuna provides 500 million ryo and assigns Shisui to oversee assistance for vulnerable members 10.
  • Clan relief program: Supports widows, orphans, and disabled members through money, housing, land, and direct help from active shinobi 25.
  • Additional payment: Kazuna obtains 100 million ryo from the Hokage after another confrontation 76.
  • Dōjutsu-enhancing medicine: Made by mixing a split portion of Kazuna’s Divine Tree fruit into ordinary medicine. Even small improvements are highly prized by members seeking Sharingan evolution 192.
  • Future manpower: Increased births under Kazuna’s development policies create a new generation expected to strengthen the clan within ten years 213.

Relationships

  • Konohagakure — Home village and military affiliation. Its relationship with the clan moves from discrimination and coup fears to Uchiha-led government under Kazuna 1 2 220.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi and the Hokage Faction — Principal political opponents during Kazuna’s rise. Their efforts include exploiting leaked defenses, weakening the clan through deployments, and targeting Kazuna 17 121 182.
  • Danzō Shimura and Root — Persistent enemies seeking Uchiha power. Danzō attacks Shisui, and Kazuna accuses both Danzō and Hiruzen of taking Uchiha adults, children, bodies, and living captives for experiments 72 295.
  • Aburame Clan — Close allies who secretly pledge themselves to the Uchiha, provide intelligence, and support the withdrawal announcement 135 174 187.
  • Inuzuka Clan — Identified as close to the Uchiha during their political ascendancy 174.
  • Hyuga Clan — Both a rival eye-technique clan and an unstable political partner. Hiashi’s hostility toward Hiruzen brings him closer to the Uchiha, but the Hyuga later join opposition to Kazuna 40 174 284.
  • Ino–Shika–Cho — Torifu initially defends the Uchiha and cooperates against Hiruzen’s faction; later, members participate in rebellion against Kazuna’s government 73 174 284.
  • Senju Clan — Historical rivals. Kazuna later cooperates with Hashirama and Tobirama, while Tobirama remains uneasy about Uchiha dominance and its abundance of potential Hokage candidates 316 379 397.
  • Tsunade — Receives Uchiha votes during her election and challenges village leaders to explain how they could forcibly prevent the clan from leaving 187 188.
  • Obito and Madara Uchiha — Fellow clansmen who become major adversaries of Kazuna and his forces. Their personal schemes do not represent the clan’s leadership under Kazuna 37 324 364.
