Background

Obito was once a Konohagakure shinobi remembered as a hero on the Memorial Stone. He served alongside Kakashi Hatake and Rin Nohara under Minato Namikaze, and he gave Kakashi his Sharingan during the Third Shinobi World War. His reported death prevented even Kakashi and Minato from recognizing him after he became the Masked Man. 218 221

Rin’s death became the wound that defined his actions. Obito blamed Kakashi for failing to protect her and Minato for the circumstances surrounding her death, eventually embracing the Moon Eye Plan as a way to create a world where he could see Rin again. 215 339 348 349

Operating behind a mask and claiming to be Madara Uchiha, Obito manipulated events across the Shinobi World, built forces around Akatsuki, and coordinated with Black and White Zetsu.
