Background
Madara was Hashirama Senju’s lifelong rival. Their final battle pushed Madara into despair and led to the awakening of his Rinnegan; he later treated Hashirama as the only opponent truly worth his attention 340.
He once desired to become Hokage, making Kazuna’s position as an Uchiha Hokage particularly significant to him. Madara recognizes that Kazuna elevated the Uchiha to an unprecedented height, with multiple Mangekyō users and several Kage-level fighters 312 313.
Madara devised the Moon Eye Plan as his answer to the cycle of war. He argues that permanent peace requires Infinite Tsukuyomi: a world forced into an eternal dream where conflict cannot continue 350.
Personality
Madara is intensely proud, contemptuous of those he considers weak, and openly dismissive of Orochimaru, Tobirama, and most ordinary shinobi. He treats collateral casualties as insignificant and is willing to devastate the battlefield merely to pressure Hashirama and his enemies 313 327 328.
His obsession with Hashirama repeatedly overrides his strategic priorities. He eagerly accepts cooperation with Kazuna only after it is framed as an opportunity to fight shoulder to shoulder with Hashirama, and Hashirama’s appeals remain one of the few things capable of influencing him 325 390.
Madara views allies as tools. He regards Obito as a disposable piece in his larger plan, only to discover that Black Zetsu had similarly been using him as a vessel for Kaguya’s resurrection 324 369.
Abilities & Skills
Dōjutsu
Madara possesses the Mangekyō Sharingan, Rinnegan, and later a third Rinnegan in his forehead.
- Uses the Mangekyō Sharingan to manifest Susanoo and challenge Hashirama directly 313.
- The Rinnegan enables Shinra Tensei, ninjutsu absorption, and resistance to high-level sealing 315 357.
- His third Rinnegan substantially increases his power as a Ten-Tails jinchūriki 368.
- His Rinnegan allows him to suppress even Sage Mode Hashirama in direct combat 352.
Susanoo
Madara’s Complete Susanoo is a colossal armored avatar capable of overpowering Hashirama’s Wood Golem.
- Its sword strikes carve deep gashes through the battlefield and endanger nearby shinobi 314.
- It can wield multiple blades to break Adamantine Sealing Chains and sand-based seals 315.
- Madara combines Susanoo with the Ten-Tails and later with Wood Release constructs 339 364.
- His Susanoo can clash evenly with Sasuke’s in their generational Uchiha confrontation 390.
Rinnegan Techniques
Madara uses gravitational and absorption techniques to dominate large-scale battles.
- Shinra Tensei repels nine simultaneous Tailed Beast Bombs 316.
- Absorbs combined ninjutsu attacks and throws multiple shinobi away with a single repulsive blast 357.
- Uses a massive Shinra Tensei that Hashirama can only partially counter through Five Layered Rashōmon and Wood Golem Technique 362.
- Forms Truth-Seeking Orbs capable of neutralizing attacks, generating suction, and protecting him from direct assaults 368 369.
Wood Release and Sage Chakra
After gaining Hashirama’s cells and natural energy, Madara can use Senju-derived powers alongside his Uchiha techniques.
- Summons Wood Golems and covers them with Susanoo armor 364.
- Absorbs Hashirama’s natural energy, granting him Sage Chakra 362.
- Combines Wood Release with the Rinnegan and Susanoo to widen the gap between himself and Hashirama 364.
Ten-Tails Power
As the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki, Madara becomes a Six Paths-level threat.
- Absorbs the Tailed Beasts to complete his transformation 361 362.
- Uses the Ten-Tails to transform into a Divine Tree and fire devastating Tailed Beast Bombs 345.
- Attempts to activate Infinite Tsukuyomi by creating and using a moon as its focal point 369.
- His Ten-Tails state makes him difficult to mark with Flying Thunder God and largely immune to conventional coordinated attacks 369.
Meteor Summoning
Madara can call down meteors of catastrophic scale while reanimated.
- Uses a meteor against Hashirama and the Allied Forces, forcing Hashirama to deploy a massive Wood Release Great Buddha to stop it 327.
- Summons a second, larger meteor that Hashirama fails to halt; Kazuna splits its resulting shockwave with Susanoo 328.
Relationships
- Hashirama Senju — Lifelong rival and the person Madara most wants to fight. Their hostility repeatedly turns into reluctant cooperation when larger threats emerge 313 325 390.
- Uchiha Kazuna — A powerful Uchiha successor whom Madara initially fights and distrusts. Kazuna later uses Madara’s bond with Hashirama to recruit him against the Sage of Six Paths 312 368 390.
- Obito Uchiha — Protégé and intended instrument of the Moon Eye Plan. Madara privately considers him a tool, while Obito resists reviving Madara and attempts to seize the plan for himself 324 348.
- Black Zetsu — Supposedly Madara’s creation and servant; secretly intends to use Madara as a sacrifice to revive Kaguya Ōtsutsuki 368 369.
- Orochimaru — Summons Madara through Impure World Reincarnation but cannot truly control him; Madara openly derides him as a shadow-dwelling rat 309 313.
- Tobirama Senju — Long-standing enemy whom Madara openly despises and humiliates in battle 357 359.
- Sasuke Uchiha — A younger Uchiha whose Susanoo can contend with Madara’s; Madara later faces him as part of the conflict between the older and younger generations 390.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Orochimaru’s Reanimation
Orochimaru summons Madara through Impure World Reincarnation to counter Konohagakure. Madara immediately prioritizes fighting Hashirama over obeying Orochimaru, and his battle with Hashirama threatens everyone caught nearby 309 313 314.
Rinnegan Battle Against Kazuna and Hashirama
After revealing the Rinnegan, Madara breaks free of a combined seal and fights Kazuna and Hashirama together. He repels nine Tailed Beast Bombs, resists repeated sealing attempts, and forces the two strongest defenders into a direct alliance 315 316.
Moon Eye Plan and the Ten-Tails
Madara agrees to restrain Kazuna and Konohagakure’s strongest forces while Obito handles the wider war. He later uses the Ten-Tails and Divine Tree in pursuit of the Moon Eye Plan, treating the collection of Tailed Beasts as essential to his victory 324 345.
Living Revival
Obito sacrifices himself to restore Madara to life. With his Rinnegan restored, Madara overwhelms Tobirama, Minato, and other shinobi before resuming his battle with Hashirama 357 358.
Six Paths Madara
Madara absorbs the Tailed Beasts, Hashirama’s natural energy, and the Ten-Tails, becoming its jinchūriki. He attempts to cast Infinite Tsukuyomi, but Naruto destroys the constructed moon before the technique can activate 362 368 369.
Black Zetsu’s Betrayal
Kazuna exposes Black Zetsu’s true purpose: Madara was intended to become a sacrifice for Kaguya’s resurrection. Black Zetsu attempts to seize Madara’s body, but Sasuke replaces Madara with a wooden decoy using a Rinnegan-based substitution technique 369.
Battle Against the Sage of Six Paths
Kazuna reanimates Madara and Hashirama to oppose the Sage of Six Paths and his control over Naruto and Sasuke. Madara accepts only because he can fight beside Hashirama; Tobirama later directs Madara, Hashirama, and Nagato as a coordinated unit supporting Kazuna 390 397.
