Background / History

Chunyang Palace is said to have been founded by a powerful being from the Immortal Realm. It became the foremost sect in the world, possessing deep heritage, numerous experts, and a history of members attaining immortality. 14

As the Great Tang’s guardian sect, Chunyang maintained order by dispatching disciples against demons, evil cultivators, and lawless sects. Its independence from mortal authority was explicit: even the Emperor would not be personally received by Sect Leader Li Xiangyan, while royal power plays held little influence on the mountain. 14 57

The sect maintained outposts across major Tang cities. Disciples who reached the required cultivation level were assigned to live in the secular world for several years, confronting threats while tempering their state of mind. 30

During the Tang succession crisis, Imperial Princes accused Chunyang Palace of crimes and ordered its Chang’an residence vacated. The sect withdrew without resistance; after Li Chongjun’s enthronement, its title as Protector of the Nation Divine Sect was revoked. The loss of Chunyang’s restraint allowed other sects and rogue cultivators to grow more reckless. 141 142

Chunyang later supported Master Yuan’s effort to remove the Demonic Sect from Chang’an. It also preserved its strength by retreating to Mount Hua as the Western Teachings rose and its disciples became fewer. 152 327

The Western Teachings eventually attacked Shenhua Mountain. Chunyang’s great formation held, and the sect defeated the invaders despite being outnumbered; Bai Yujun’s intervention was decisive in breaking their Magic Treasures and aiding surrounded disciples. 519 524 526 528

Over the following centuries, its senior generation gradually ascended or retired. Cheng Su ultimately became Sect Master and described Chunyang Palace as an institution that brought order and elevated the fortune of all living beings. 611 730 1868

Teachings and Practices

Chunyang Palace emphasizes self-cultivation, mental discipline, and devotion to the Dao rather than dependence on pills or Magic Treasures. Its disciples are expected to cultivate a firm Dao Heart; without it, even exceptional aptitude is insufficient to enter or master its methods. 34 58 86

• Admission — Candidates are selected primarily for Dao Heart rather than bone structure or spiritual aptitude; only a tiny fraction of applicants enter the mountain. 14 86
• Cultivation methods — Chunyang methods require compatible mental cultivation and sincere commitment to Daoist principles. A common person cannot simply steal and practice them. 58 64
• Sword arts — Sword Control Technique is a foundational skill taught at Zuowang Peak, allowing qualified disciples to control flying swords in battle. 31
• Formations — Disciples study the Eight Trigrams, numerology, calculation, and execution; this knowledge is necessary for formation work. 500
• Healing — Spirit Void disciples refine medicines and pills primarily for healing, recovery, and public disaster relief. 34 38
• Secular experience — Outpost assignments expose disciples to the mortal world and help develop the state of mind required for the immortal path. 30

• Mountain Gate — A massive ancient archway inscribed with “Chunyang Palace,” radiating spiritual energy and guarded by more than a dozen disciples. 13
