Background / History
Mu Duo is the veiled Saintess of Cloud Remote Ancient Village, a White Tribe settlement of the Jiuli. Charged with securing a sacred beast before a coming calamity, she personally guarded a deep pool after months of failed attempts to locate the White Snake. When Bai Yujun finally appeared, Mu Duo offered enhanced cultivation, the village’s protection, and her own service in exchange for becoming the village’s totem. Bai Yujun’s transformation into a Jiuli maiden revealed that she was also the mysterious grocery-selling girl Mu Duo had heard of 216.
Bai Yujun eventually became the village’s sacred beast, tying Mu Duo’s status and power to the White Flood Dragon. The connection elevated Mu Duo’s sorcery and lifespan, though it also intensified the burdens placed on her as Saintess. While Bai Yujun could travel freely, Mu Duo remained bound by her office and responsibilities, often watching the sea of clouds from her pavilion 288 419 428.
During a village rebellion, Bai Yujun refused to abandon Mu Duo to conspirators who had imprisoned her and weakened her cultivation. They escaped together to Bai Manor, where Mu Duo later helped oversee Bai Yujun’s territory while the Flood Dragon was away 548 583.
Mu Duo became Bai Yujun’s preferred partner in major conflicts. In the battle against a Demonic Fiend, her long-range sorcery—flowers, vines, butterflies, poison, and flute music—restrained the enemy while Bai Yujun fought at close range 691. She later tried to stop Bai Yujun from risking her life at the Dragon Gate, but could only witness her companion commit to the gamble 719.
After leaving for the Central Plains, Mu Duo continued to reunite with Bai Yujun across centuries. She intervened in a conflict between the Heavenly Army and Jiuli by summoning a massive storm that forced both sides to retreat, despite Bai Yujun’s warning that the situation was a conspiracy 1121. At the Jiuli Holy Land, Bai Yujun proposed raising Mu Duo from a village Saintess to Saintess of all Jiuli; Mu Duo accepted in order to protect her people and support Bai Yujun’s cause 1188.
When Bai Yujun became trapped within Sky Pillar Mountain after swallowing the Great Sun Star, Mu Duo crossed the mountain, followed Bai Yujun’s guidance into the ice caves, and visited her despite the unbearable cold. Their reunion confirmed that their friendship had endured through their vastly different paths and powers 1554 1555 1556.
Appearance
Mu Duo is a tall Jiuli woman with long limbs, usually dressed in traditional Jiuli clothing and a veil. Her appearance is frequently accompanied by silver ornaments, a gourd flute, and vivid butterflies 216 548 1380.
- Wears a veil during many early appearances 216.
- Has long legs and slender arms, with a poised bearing 548.
- Uses Jiuli-style silver jewelry; later wears a silver phoenix crown 1380.

Personality
Mu Duo is calm, restrained, and observant. She is not naturally ambitious, preferring the quiet routines of village life, reading, music, and watching the sea of clouds. Her position as Saintess nevertheless leaves her unable to live as freely as she wishes, and she openly envies Bai Yujun’s wandering life 288 624.
Her composure masks a strong sense of duty. She is willing to risk herself for Jiuli civilians, protect Bai Yujun, and accept greater authority when the safety of her people requires it 1121 1188. She also understands Bai Yujun unusually well, recognizing when the Dragon is afraid, lonely, or behaving unlike herself 695 706 1388.
Mu Duo is patient with Bai Yujun’s antics but does not hesitate to respond with silence, dry remarks, or visible exasperation. Their contrasting temperaments—Mu Duo’s steadiness and Bai Yujun’s impulsive playfulness—form the foundation of their long friendship 288 624.
