History

Taking in Gengetsu

Minato first appears helping Hiruzen calm Kushina during the investigation of Uzumaki Gengetsu. He regards the memory inspection as both village procedure and protection for Kushina, the Nine-Tails' jinchuriki, and asks Inoichi to conduct it carefully. Once Gengetsu is cleared and released from hospital, Minato and Kushina take him home; Gengetsu begins calling him “Big Brother” 1.

Minato supports Gengetsu's early training through his Academy notes, Water Release instruction, and a Flying Thunder God kunai. After Root attempts to detain Gengetsu, he praises the boy's survival and advises caution. They agree not to tell Kushina, recognizing both her likely anger and Danzo's political position 2 4 6.

Wartime Missions and Roran

During the encounter with the Mist swordsmen, Minato arrives with Choza Akimichi and other Konoha jonin to rescue Gengetsu's team. He kills three surrounding jonin, then throws eight marked kunai and attacks eight opponents in rapid succession with Rasengan. His performance convinces Gengetsu to pursue Flying Thunder God; later, Gengetsu identifies the wielders of Hiramekarei and Nuibari as the two swordsmen Minato had dealt with 25 122.

In Roran, Minato seals the Dragon Vein with a specially prepared kunai as the time-displaced Naruto and Yamato begin returning to the future. He then prepares a memory-erasing seal. Gengetsu believes Minato has recognized Naruto as his son and understood that he did not survive to raise him in that future 37.

Minato also helps assess Gengetsu's Thunderstorm Tags, immediately arranging a practical test and asking about their production requirements. He supports cooperation with Konoha's ninja clans and brings samples to Hiruzen 63 64.

Becoming the Fourth Hokage

Minato becomes a candidate to succeed Hiruzen, competing with Orochimaru, whom Danzo supports. On August 15, Konoha Year 46, he receives unanimous support in the jonin confidence vote. The following day, Hiruzen publicly hands him the Hokage hat 209 214 217.

The transfer of authority is gradual. Hiruzen initially retains control over part of the ANBU, while Danzo continues to command Root. Gengetsu strengthens Minato's direct forces by recruiting Shisui Uchiha and Hyuga Mana into ANBU and training his guards, Genma Shiranui, Namiashi Raidō, and Iwashi Tatami 217.

Naruto's Birth and the Nine-Tails Attack

After Kushina announces her pregnancy, Gengetsu returns to the household as her guard. Minato takes his warnings about a possible attack during childbirth seriously and agrees to consult Hiruzen. He later helps escort Kushina to the secret delivery room 217 218 227.

During the Nine-Tails attack, Minato and Gengetsu work together to split and seal Kurama while Obito interferes through Susanoo and Kamui. Minato takes the Yin half into himself; afterward, he helps Gengetsu seal the other half inside Naruto 234 235 237.

Institutional Reform and Family Life

Danzo's death removes a major obstacle to Minato's authority. Minato begins reorganizing ANBU, seeks to abolish Root, and proposes a Special Training Division for reserve members. Clan leaders hesitate because shared training could weaken their control over secret techniques, but the educational reforms eventually help more civilian ninja rise to prominence and reduce the gap created by inherited bloodlines 240 241 246 452.

When Hiruko disappears during a four-village pursuit, Minato suspects assistance from Akatsuki's space-time ninjutsu users. Rather than launch an unprepared attack on Amegakure, he recalls the pursuit squad, reasoning that an operation would be dangerous and ineffective unless Konoha could seize or destroy the Rinnegan 305.

On October 15, Konoha Year 49, Kushina gives birth to their daughter, Kugatsu, under heavy security. Minato welcomes her alongside Kushina, Naruto, and Gengetsu 305.

Allied Shinobi Leadership

Minato dispatches Kakashi's, Asuma's, and Kurenai's teams to help Sunagakure rescue the One-Tail jinchuriki, with Guy's team assigned as backup 430.

For the Five Kage Summit, he chooses Guy for combat strength and Itachi for judgment. He leaves Kakashi in Konoha partly because he considers him the best candidate for Fifth Hokage if anything happens to him. During the summit attack, Minato remains alert for Obito and Nagato rather than joining the fighting, and directs Guy to assist the Fourth Raikage. His judgment becomes increasingly strategic as Hokage. He accepts warnings about Kushina's delivery, withdraws from the Hiruko pursuit when Konoha is unprepared for escalation, and plans for succession before leaving for the Five Kage Summit 218 305 438.

Minato is self-critical as a teacher. Watching Kakashi develop, he worries that he has too little to teach his students and considers entrusting part of their training to Gengetsu. He also recognizes the value of rigorous instruction, praising Gengetsu's demanding methods 60 209.

His loyalty to family and village overrides his lingering attachment to Obito. During the Nine-Tails attack, he resolves to fight his former student as an enemy to protect Kushina, Naruto, Gengetsu, and Konoha.
