Background / History

Childhood and Jia Nan Academy

Zi Yan grew up among magical beasts and was bullied by stronger beasts. After accidentally eating Transformation Grass, she became a human child, could not return to her original form, and eventually forgot what that form was. Su Qian brought her to Jia Nan Academy, where her intimidating behavior became a way of protecting herself 18 36.

Believing her parents had abandoned her, she developed deep resentment toward them. Her desire to confront her family was the reason she accepted Jiang Xing’s offer to find her clansmen 18 36.

Meeting Jiang Xing

Jiang Xing first encounters Zi Yan fighting the Snow Demon Sky Ape for Core Body Tempering Fluid. Her physical strength initially gives her the advantage, but the ape’s Berserk Bloodline raises its power to the equivalent of a Five-Star Dou Wang and overwhelms her. Jiang Xing intervenes and kills it 17 18.

Recognizing her spatial abilities and sensitivity to treasures, Jiang Xing identifies her as an Ancient Void Dragon. He offers to take her to the Central Continent, shares the fluid with her, and supplies medicinal and healing pills. Zi Yan leaves a letter for Su Qian before accompanying him to the Snake-People Tribe, where she meets Qing Lin 18.

Jiang Xing’s recruitment is partly calculated: he wants the Ancient Void Dragons’ support and hopes Zi Yan can connect him with Zhu Kun. Nevertheless, he continues supplying her with pills and helps her recover her family ties 17 31 36 37.

Reunion with Zhu Kun

Jiang Xing takes Zi Yan beneath Jia Nan Academy to the Tou She Ancient God’s Cave Mansion. There, Zhu Kun recognizes his daughter through their shared bloodline. Zi Yan initially rejects him, declaring that she has no parents 36.

Zhu Kun explains that he was trapped after coveting the mansion and did not deliberately abandon her. Jiang Xing urges her to give him a chance, and her resentment begins to lessen. Zhu Kun gives her a storage ring containing 47 Heaven Rank cultivation methods and Dou Techniques, including seven Heaven Rank Advanced ones 36 37.

Becoming Dragon Emperor

Zi Yan initially refuses to return to her clan because she does not want to leave Jiang Xing. She agrees after he claims that he needs her to become stronger and help him against a powerful enemy 51.

Hei Qing locates the group by sensing her royal bloodline and leads them to East Dragon Island. Zhu Li confirms her identity as Zhu Kun’s child and prepares her succession. During the ceremony, her Dragon Emperor Bloodline compels weaker Ancient Void Dragons to kneel 53 54 56.

The Three Dragon Kings attempt to kill her before her lineage can undermine their authority. Zhu Li shields her, while Jiang Cheng intervenes and ultimately kills all three kings. The islands submit to Zi Yan, unifying the clan under its new Dragon Emperor 58 60.

Life on Dragon Island

Jiang Xing promises to visit once Zi Yan reaches Dou Venerate, using the prospect of seeing him again to encourage her cultivation. Her wish to grow out of her childlike body provides another strong motivation 61 89.

After reaching Five-Star Dou Venerate, she visits the Jiang Clan to meet Cai Lin’s newborn daughter, Jiang Yue. She confronts Jiang Xing over his forgotten promise, then forgives him after he apologizes. With Cai Lin’s guidance, she learns to amuse and hold the baby 75 76.

Clan administration repeatedly keeps her away from her friends. To secure permission to leave, she stages an angry confrontation and threatens to abdicate, frightening Qing Shan and Zhu Li into relenting. Afterward, she admits the performance to Jiang Xing and accepts his warning not to frighten the elders that way again 81 82 85.

Dragon Phoenix Transformation and the Jiang Clan’s Refuge

Jiang Xing directs Zi Yan toward large ruins in the Beast Domain, suggesting that they contain medicine capable of helping her grow. She obtains the Dragon Phoenix Origin Fruit and enters seclusion with older Ancient Void Dragon elders supervising its refinement 90 91 99.

She reappears as a young woman at Seven-Star Dou Saint, arriving with Qing Shan to rescue Jiang Xing, Jiang Cheng, and Cai Lin from Gu Song and Hun Ye. Her strength and forceful stance prevent the confrontation from becoming a battle 120.

When the Jiang Clan relocates to Ancient Dragon Island for safety, Zi Yan welcomes them and summons the elders to ensure that her guests receive protection and respect. She later assigns the Late Four-Star Dou Saint elder Zhu Yu to help Jiang Xing pursue the Purifying Demonic Lotus Flame 121 136.

Later Campaigns and Family Reconciliation

Zi Yan follows Jiang Xing to the Yao Clan’s Medicine Ceremony and conceals them while he waits for an opportunity to seize the Life Spirit Flame. Later, she wins the elders’ unanimous support for a night raid on the Heaven Demon Phoenix Clan, leads the attack, and kills its patriarch, Huang Tian. The resulting essence blood raises her to Eight-Star Dou Saint 163 170 171 176.

During the assault on the Ancient Realm, she and Jiang Xing jointly fight the late Eight-Star Dou Saint Yan Clan Progenitor. Afterward, she seals Dragon Island and prohibits departures for two years to prevent enemies from locating it and disturbing Jiang Xing’s seclusion 181 182 184 189.

She also assists Jiang Xing’s interrogation of captured Gu Clan Half-Saints by cooperating with his staged threat against Gu Xun’er 191 192.

By her later visit to Zhu Kun, Zi Yan has long forgiven her father, although she initially feels awkward meeting him again. She credits Jiang Xing with helping her obtain the Dragon Phoenix Origin Fruit and intervenes when Zhu Kun becomes angry over Jiang Xing’s unfulfilled promise to gather the Ancient Jade 196.

Appearance

  • Child form: A little girl with purple hair, delicate features, and a purple robe. The lasting effects of Transformation Grass preserve this appearance even after she reaches Dou Venerate 17 21 89.
  • Mature form: A slender, graceful young woman with long purple-gold hair, purple-gold eyes, and a purple-gold robe embroidered with Dragon-Phoenix patterns 120.
  • Distinguishing feature: Purple-gold wings described as over three meters long 120.
  • Dragon form: Arrives at the Barren Ancient Domain as an enormous Ancient Void Dragon before transforming into human form 120.

Personality

Zi Yan is lively, blunt, mischievous, and strongly attracted to medicinal pills and treasure hunting. She enjoys finding and taking treasures even when neither she nor her clan needs them. Becoming Dragon Emperor does not erase these traits; she remains restless during administrative reports and often delegates tedious work 47 81 86 163.

Her childhood aggression conceals loneliness and a desire for parental affection. She remembers kindness, becomes deeply attached to Jiang Xing, and reluctantly accepts separation when she believes becoming stronger will help him. Her affection for Jiang Yue also reveals patience: rather than forcing the frightened infant to accept her, she gradually earns the child’s trust through play 36 37 51 76.

She can be calculating when she wants freedom, as demonstrated by her staged abdication threat. As she matures, that forcefulness also becomes a leadership tool: she protects the Jiang Clan, directs military action, and willingly endures isolation to safeguard Jiang Xing’s cultivation 85 121 170 189.
