Background
Tongtian was one of the Three Pure Ones alongside Taishang and Yuanshi. In their earlier years at Eastern Kunlun, the three lived together, discussed the Dao, and celebrated one another’s cultivation progress. Tongtian’s Sword Dao centered on cultivating the heart, while he also professed conformity to the Heavenly Dao. 189
His relationship with Yuanshi steadily deteriorated over their conflicting views of the Dao. Tongtian rejected the idea that beings of “shallow origins” should be denied the opportunity to seek the Great Dao, while Yuanshi maintained a discriminatory view of such cultivators. Taishang’s attempts to mediate failed to resolve the divide. 265
Tongtian founded the Jie Sect to give all beings an opportunity to pursue transcendence and defy fate. Although this allowed him to attain Heavenly Dao Sainthood, he recognized that entrusting his Nascent Soul to the Heavenly Dao meant surrendering his freedom. He ultimately accepted the position under pressure from circumstance and the Heavenly Dao’s urging. 300
Personality
Tongtian is direct, passionate, and fiercely protective of his disciples. He openly resists what he considers the Heavenly Dao’s unfairness and the Saints’ bias, declaring that he will go against Heaven rather than allow the Jie Sect to be sacrificed. 443
He values equality in the pursuit of the Great Dao, particularly defending cultivators whom Yuanshi dismisses for their origins. This conviction repeatedly brings him into conflict with his brothers and shapes the inclusive identity of the Jie Sect. 265 300
Despite his pride and formidable strength, Tongtian is emotionally candid with Lin Tian. When the Investiture of the Gods threatened his sect, he dropped his usual Saintly composure and admitted his hurt over Yuanshi’s hostility and Taishang’s silence. 420
