Background
Cipher first encounters Jiang Mo while he is starving and imprisoned by his uncle. Having stolen a gem from the treasury herself, she gives him food after he refuses to expose her, calls him a “little wildcat,” and offers to teach him in exchange for his obedience as her “little cat.” 54
She trains Jiang Mo in silent movement, concealment, lockpicking, escape tools, basic tricks, and thieves’ cant. The two eventually become equal partners, dividing their earnings evenly and operating as a rogue duo in Doros. Cipher insists that their thefts should support homeless children, though she also admits to occasionally stealing for themselves. 54 57
After the pair move to Okhma, Cipher’s impatience nearly ruins their first transaction with Aglaya, whom she repeatedly calls “seamstress.” She later selects Aglaya’s own mansion for a major heist and is captured in the treasure room by Golden Threads. 58 59
Cipher returns to Doros to sell clothing and aid stray kittens, but city guards, merchants, and bounty hunters identify her as a wanted Golden-Blooded thief. She escapes through the sewers and returns to Aglaya’s home injured, exhausted, and traumatized. During her recovery, she reveals her Golden-Blooded heritage and her rejection of the status attached to it. 61 62
Appearance
Cipher is a gray-haired cat-eared woman with a long gray tail and small fangs. As she grows older, she becomes a graceful, athletic young woman, retaining the agile build developed through years of running, climbing, and evading pursuit. 57 69
- Short gray hair, later braided into a neat plait. 69
- Prominent cat ears and tail; her ears visibly droop when she is injured or distressed. 62 66
- Golden blood, marking her as Golden-Blooded. 62
- Usually wears lightweight dark clothing tailored by Aglaya, including a hood with ear openings and a tail opening. 66
- Wore a white, gold-threaded wedding dress during her marriage to Jiang Mo in a later recreated cycle. 109
Personality
Cipher is lively, teasing, and proudly theatrical. She habitually calls Jiang Mo “little cat” or “Kitten,” pokes fun at others, and uses swagger to conceal uncertainty. Her confidence can turn impulsive—most notably when she chooses Aglaya’s residence as a robbery target without realizing who owns it. 54 58 59
Despite her criminal life, Cipher is deeply compassionate toward Doros’ abandoned children. Her ambition to become a famous thief is tied to a practical goal: ensuring that no stray child is left hungry or uncared for. This compassion ultimately convinces her to join the Journey of Chasing the Fire and protect Doros from the Black Tide, even after receiving an ominous prophecy. 59 69
She distrusts grand rhetoric about heroism, having seen supposedly righteous people act selfishly. Nevertheless, she is stubbornly courageous when others need help. Her later secrecy, disappearance, and inability to answer Jiang Mo’s question about why she left reveal the guilt and emotional burden she carries alone. 68 99 103
Abilities & Skills
Master Thievery
Cipher is an experienced rogue whose techniques form the basis of Jiang Mo’s early training.
- Moves silently, conceals her presence, and escapes restraints or locked spaces using improvised tools. 54
- Traverses rooftops, alleys, walls, and sewers while evading guards and bounty hunters. 61
- Plans and executes infiltrations, including the theft of a royal scepter during Ghost Day. 59 71
- Knows thieves’ cant and uses tricks, misdirection, and social manipulation in her work. 54 70
Rogue Leadership
Cipher becomes one of Omphalos’ most renowned thieves and organizes the plan to lure Zagreus.
- Recruits master thieves across Omphalos for a year, persuading retirees, fugitives, and prisoners to join the scheme. 70
- Leads more than three hundred rogues in the Grand Scheme to Deceive the Gods. 70 71
- Maintains the rogues’ morale when the plan appears to fail and Zagreus does not immediately arrive. 71
Deceit Authority
After inheriting Zagreus’ Spark, Cipher becomes the demigod of Deceit.
- Completes a divine trial centered on distinguishing truth from falsehood. 72 73
- Uses lies connected to the God of Trickery to maintain Okhma’s light for centuries. 103
- Her divine power carries a mental risk: becoming lost in falsehood during the Spark Trial would result in being consumed by the Spark. 72
Godspeed
Cipher’s signature divine movement ability is activated through her Flipping Coin.
- Vanishes after tossing the coin and can instantly reach distant parts of Omphalos. 73
- Can carry other people during her movement, transporting Jiang Mo to a distant snow-capped mountain and back. 73
- Operates so quickly that planned scouting and escape routes become unnecessary. 73
- Becomes difficult even for Aglaya’s Golden Threads to detect or restrain after her ascension. 73
- Refuses to allow Jiang Mo to copy Godspeed, saying only that the restriction is for his own good. 73
Equipment
- Flipping Coin — Used to activate Cipher’s Godspeed; in a recreated cycle, it is remade into a ring for her engagement to Jiang Mo. 73 109
- Gold Weave thief outfit — A dark, lightweight protective outfit with accommodations for her ears and tail. 66
- Golden boots — A pair of boots blessed by Zagreus, said to grant swift and silent movement; Cipher cannot wear them when first gifted because they are too large. 66
Relationships
- Jiang Mo — Her student, rogue partner, and eventual lover. Cipher takes him in as her “little cat,” trusts him with her fears, and repeatedly affirms that their partnership matters more to her than wealth or success. Their bond fractures after she leaves without explanation, but remains central through her death, rebirth, and later search for him. 54 57 74 99 104 109 116
- Aglaya — Initially an exasperated target of Cipher’s “seamstress” nickname, later her benefactor, mentor, and ally in the Journey of Chasing the Fire. Aglaya shelters Cipher, gives her tailored equipment, and guides her before the Spark Trial. 58 60 66 72
- Doros’ homeless children — The primary reason Cipher continues stealing from the wealthy. Their safety motivates her return to Doros and her decision to oppose the Black Tide. 59 67 69
- The master thieves of Omphalos — Rogues recruited by Cipher for the scheme against Zagreus; they recognize her as a legendary thief and pledge their support after the plan succeeds. 70 72
- Zagreus — The Titan of Trickery whose Spark Cipher inherits after Jiang Mo defeats him. 71 72
Story Role / Major Arcs

Flight from Doros
After becoming wanted as a Golden-Blooded thief, Cipher barely escapes Doros through its sewers. Jiang Mo retaliates against those behind the bounty, while Cipher returns to check that the city’s children are safe after its regime changes. 61 62 67

Demigod of Deceit
Following her successful trial, Cipher becomes a near-uncatchable phantom thief who protects the poor and repeatedly robs Okhma’s elite. Her ascension creates tension with Jiang Mo, who feels increasingly unnecessary beside her overwhelming speed and independence. 73 74
Disappearance and Sacrifice
Cipher leaves Jiang Mo a letter and evades his searches for centuries. It is later revealed that she secretly bears the burden of preserving Okhma’s light. She dies in Stykosia after protecting Kephale’s Seed, apologizing to Jiang Mo and expressing her love in her final moments. 74 75 103 104
Rebirth and Search for Jiang Mo
After Omphalos becomes a Memoria World, Cipher is reborn without a complete memory of Jiang Mo. Discovering a ring engraved with “Sephalia & Jiang” triggers fragments of their past, leading her to search the city for a person who seemingly never existed there. 115 116
