You might find it hard to imagine Wizards like the Four Founders being driven half mad by Dementors. Compared with the shadowy things that drifted about now in tattered black robes, they were more like a synonym for disaster—just like the Black Death, which had taken a third of Europe's population more than six hundred years ago. A Wizard's Wand could fell enemies and hunt Dragons, but how could it wipe out a plague that had already spread through the crowd?
We desperately hoped to find a way to end them once and for all. If hope died with our generation, then our descendants would have to face those disasters. Gryffindor was the Wizard most skilled at dueling at the time. In my view, even Wizards now lack that beastlike sharpness for battle. Albus is too thorough, Grindelwald loves flashy technique, Scamander relies on external things, and the young people of Nelson's generation have yet to grow up... Only the Wizards keeping watch at sea escaped disaster, yet the Dementors did not pursue them outward. Instead, they madly attacked the sarcophagus at the center of the island.
This further confirmed my guess. The owner of the coffin was not
