Background and History

Lu Ya is Dijun’s son and Xihe’s child. Hou Yi shot down his nine elder brothers during the Lich Tribulation, leaving Lu Ya with a blood feud against him 118 138. As Demon Emperor and Tongtian’s disciple, Lu Ya leads the Demon Court while also representing the Sect of Interception 117 137.

His attempts to restore the Demon Court repeatedly bring him into conflict with Ling Xiao and the Heavenly Court. After Hong Yun defeats Demon Court forces, Lu Ya swears a Heavenly Dao Oath to withdraw them from the Primordial Starry Sky 118 119. The Human and Witch Clans later devastate Phoenix Perch Mountain; Lu Ya returns to find Xihe injured and resists surrendering the mountain 168 169.

After advancing to early Quasi-Sage, Lu Ya attacks Ling Xiao in the Netherworld to seize the Witch-Slaying Sword. Ksitigarbha and Chiyou capture him and send him through the punishments of the Eighteen Levels of Hell 177 178 179. On his release, he admits his fault to Tongtian and Nuwa. The ordeal tempers his impulsiveness, and he begins proposing schemes for the Sect of Interception 184 185 196.

At Jizhou, attacks and provocations push Lu Ya into the demonic path. Ling Xiao suppresses him, forcing him back into his Golden Crow form 212 214 215. Nuwa strips him of the Demon Emperor title and allows the Western Sect to take him for conversion 220. He subsequently identifies solely as a Western Sect disciple and Mahavairocana Buddha. He fights his former sect and kills Zhao Gongming, sending him onto the Investiture of the Gods List 222 240 241.

Appearance

Before his conversion, Lu Ya has crimson-gold eyes, long crimson-gold hair, and Solar True Fire around him. His true form is an immense three-legged Golden Crow 168 215 222.

• After conversion: His hair is shaved, healed scars mark his head, and he wears a spotless white kesa and carries Buddhist prayer beads 222.
• Changed aura: His demon qi gives way to Buddhist Dao laws and light 222 236.

Personality

Lu Ya is proud and quick to challenge threats to his authority, particularly where the Demon Court or his family is concerned. He initially assumes his treasures and status can protect him even in the Netherworld, but calls for restraint when Chiyou is summoned against him 138 168 178. His punishment in Hell leaves a lasting psychological wound and makes him more attentive to the need for a legitimate pretext before acting 184 185.

He retains a capacity for calculated schemes: his plan to turn Nezha against the East Sea Dragon Palace is intended to damage the Sect of Enlightenment’s fortune 196. After conversion, he speaks gently and presents his former Demon Emperor identity as a discarded past, yet shows no reluctance to fight former fellow disciples 222 547 241.
