Nature and Authority

• The Heavenly Dao rose to prominence after the Dragon-Han Initial Tribulation, when the Great Dao retreated into the Chaos Void 617.
• It governs the Primordial World through its order, rules, origin, luck, merit, and divine runes 13 54.
• Heavenly Dao Sages are constrained by its rules; unlike them, the Six Imperial Heavenly Emperors need not entrust their primordial spirits to it, though they still bear defined duties 8.
• The Heavenly Dao can recognize oaths, establish legitimacy for sects and institutions, and distribute Heavenly Dao Merit and Destiny to those who contribute to major tribulations or uphold its order 142 443 749.

Relationship with Dao Ancestor Hongjun

Hongjun merged with the Heavenly Dao, but the two are explicitly distinct: “Hongjun became the Heavenly Dao, but the Heavenly Dao was not Hongjun.” After merging, Hongjun remained bound by the Dao's rules and could not directly intervene in many affairs of the Primordial World 54.

During Zhen Yuanzi's attempt to awaken the Earthly Dao, the Heavenly Dao treated the effort as rebellion and moved to prevent it. Hongjun directly opposed it, protecting Zhen Yuanzi's true spirit and allowing the Earthly Dao to awaken 54 55.

Following the awakening of the Earthly Dao, Hongjun gained its authority and could contend with the Heavenly Dao as an equal rather than merely serving as its puppet 56. After the Human Dao awakened, Hongjun's former Heavenly Dao Golden Wheel became a three-colored wheel representing the Heavenly Dao, Earthly Dao, and Human Dao 605.

Manifestations

Eye of Heavenly Punishment

The Eye of Heavenly Punishment manifests as blood-colored thunder and overwhelming law-order descending from the heavens.

• It appeared above the Netherworld to stop Zhen Yuanzi from awakening the Earthly Dao 54.
• Its punishment included an attempt to erase Zhen Yuanzi from the River of Life 54 55.
• It vanished after Hongjun intervened, after which the Heavenly Dao's origin and rules visibly solidified 54.

Heavenly Dao Origin and Rules

The Heavenly Dao's origin can directly affect cultivators, artifacts, and the structure of the world.

• It formed a great hand within the River of Life to destroy Zhen Yuanzi's true spirit; Hongjun's Creation Jade Plate dispersed it 55.
• Its origin and rule-order were consumed by Tongtian to recover his injuries and enhance the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation 574 579.
• Tongtian's resulting advancement came at the cost of his primordial spirit, true spirit, Sage Dao Fruit, and origin mana becoming stained by the Heavenly Dao's will and order 579.

Heavenly Dao Merit and Destiny

Heavenly Dao Merit and Destiny serve as recognition and reward for actions aligned with the world's order.

• Ling Xiao received vast merit and luck upon being appointed Great Emperor of the Azure Radiance and overseer of the Investiture of the Gods 13.
• The Witch Clan received immense merit after swearing to obey Hongjun's laws and the Heavenly Dao's order 142.
• The Book of Rites' publication brought merit and luck that were divided between the Heavenly Court and the Elucidation Sect 482.
• At the conclusion of the Journey to the West Tribulation, merit and destiny descended upon all beings who had contributed, altering their fortunes and supporting breakthroughs 749.

Heavenly Dao Shackles

The Heavenly Dao uses shackles and karmic burdens to restrain beings bound by past sins and tribulations.

• Azure Dragon was bound by Heavenly Dao shackles and karmic consequences until the Dragon Kings petitioned the Dao Ancestor and Heavenly Dao for mercy 160.
• Xuanwu remained restricted by shackles even after merit began dissolving his karmic burdens; Ling Xiao used Heavenly Dao authority, fortune, and the power of heaven and earth to break them 253.
• The Four Sacred Beasts' shackles were later cleansed through Heavenly Dao Merit and rule-order, enabling deeper comprehension of their respective laws 608.
