Background

Tongtian led the Jie Sect as one of the most influential Heavenly Dao Sages. He once told Ling Xiao that he possessed the potential to become a sect leader; Ling Xiao devoted himself to the sect in response, attempting to mediate sect conflicts and preserve the Three Pure Ones' unity. Ling Xiao was later forced to sever his karmic ties with the Jie Sect, leaving Tongtian with a powerful former disciple turned adversary 1 10.

His Jie Sect embraced numerous disciples, but their unchecked conduct accumulated slaughter karma and repeatedly embroiled the sect in conflict. Tongtian struggled to restrain figures such as the Golden-Winged Great Peng, even as their actions worsened the sect's standing before the Investiture of the Gods Tribulation 11 77.

Appearance

Tongtian is depicted in a profound black Daoist robe, with an ancient and pure aura accompanied by the faint resonance of sword cries 637.

  • Carries an austere, still expression that can rapidly give way to rage.
  • Emits pervasive Sword Dao order and the pressure of a Sage when fighting 586.
  • During his imprisonment, his hair becomes disheveled and his Daoist robes tattered 619.

Personality

Tongtian is fiercely proud, protective of his sect, and unwilling to compromise when he believes the Jie Sect's dignity is at stake. He refuses to sign the Investiture of the Gods List because he cannot face his disciples or betray his own Dao, even when confronted by Yuanshi Tianzun and the other Sages 73.

His loyalty to his disciples is genuine but often manifests as indulgence. He repeatedly escalates conflicts to protect or avenge Jie Sect members, including personally leading his direct disciples to Mount Sumeru to rescue Wuyun Xian 327. His pride also makes him highly vulnerable to provocation, humiliation, and perceived betrayal.

As the Jie Sect collapses, Tongtian becomes increasingly regretful, volatile, and self-destructive. He regrets driving Ling Xiao from the sect and later recognizes the consequences of destroying Biyou Palace and Golden Turtle Island in his rage 363 573 660. After losing his Saintly position, he gradually learns humility, accepts Ling Xiao's terms to rebuild, and attempts to begin again at Mount Cangwu 621 638.

Abilities & Skills

Supreme Clarity Sword Dao

Tongtian's primary Dao is the Supreme Clarity Sword Dao, which he teaches to his disciples and wields at an exceptional level.

  • Condenses Sword Dao laws into destructive rivers and formations 398 402.
  • His sword energy can wound multiple Sages and continue eroding their bodies and origins 591.
  • His Sword Dao is ultimately overwhelmed by Ling Xiao's Primordial Creation Seal and later refined by the Pangu Primordial Spirit 402 592.

Immortal Slaying Sword Formation

Tongtian's life-bound formation is the centerpiece of his combat power.

  • Deploys the formation across vast regions of the Chaos Void and seals enemies within its killing domain 398 567.
  • Requires enemies to contend with both its Four Swords of Zhu Xian and Tongtian's own Sage-level attacks 567.
  • Is reforged with Demon Ancestor Rahu's aura of slaughter, the residual power of the three thousand Chaos Demon Gods, and Heavenly Dao origin. It becomes a low-grade Chaos Treasure capable of killing Saints 573 581.
  • Tongtian ultimately detonates the formation amid his attempt to destroy the Primordial Chaos Three Realms 593.

Pangu Banner

Tongtian obtains the Pangu Banner after choosing it over Dao Ancestor Hongjun's favor.

  • Uses it alongside the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation to fight several Sages at once 453 591.
  • Its power allows him to unleash attacks capable of extinguishing all things 592.
  • Acquiring it severs his practical relationship with Dao Ancestor Hongjun and accelerates his political isolation 453 454.

Heavenly Dao Authority

As a Heavenly Dao Sage, Tongtian commands immense authority and can suppress weaker cultivators with his aura alone.

  • His Sage might nearly crush Xingtian and the North Sea Black Tortoise when he moves to purge dissenting Jie Sect disciples 10.
  • He draws on Heavenly Dao origin to restore and elevate his cultivation during the Investiture of the Gods conflict 473 579.
  • Reliance on this power allows the Heavenly Dao's will to erode his primordial spirit and Dao heart, gradually turning him into its puppet 473 590.

Supreme Pure Daoist Methods

Tongtian preserves the teachings and inheritance of the Supreme Pure lineage even after his fall.

  • Accepts Shen Gongbao as a personal disciple and imparts the Supreme Purity Daoist methods to him 79.
  • Teaches Jin Ling the Supreme Pure Daoist Magic while warning her against Demonic Dao cultivation 687.
  • Uses his own Supreme Pure origin to suppress Jin Ling's Lone Star of Misfortune fate, severely depleting himself in the process 688 725.

  • Heaven-Opening Pearl — Bestowed upon Shen Gongbao alongside the Thunder Whip 79.
  • Fallen Saint Sword — A weapon Tongtian possesses after his fall from sainthood, though he bitterly doubts its worth 660.
  • Guqin — An unranked zither personally made from Mount Cangwu wood; Tongtian plays it when troubled 708.

  • Dao Ancestor Hongjun — Master. Tongtian chooses the Pangu Banner over Hongjun's favor, rupturing their master-disciple relationship 453 574.
  • Yuanshi Tianzun — Fellow member of the Three Pure Ones and irreconcilable rival. Their sectarian conflict develops into repeated Sage-level battles 73 473 569.
  • Grand Pure Laozi — Fellow member of the Three Pure Ones. Laozi eventually refuses to intervene in Jie Sect affairs and joins the effort to defeat Tongtian 456 569.
  • Duobao — Former chief disciple. Tongtian values him deeply, but Duobao's eventual conversion to the Western Sect devastates Tongtian 79 570 637.
  • Yun Xiao — Loyal direct disciple who repeatedly attempts to restrain and support Tongtian, even as she comes to regret the Jie Sect's path 456 590.
  • Jin Ling — Direct disciple and later Dao Companion. Tongtian spends much of his remaining Supreme Pure origin to protect her, and they are buried together 687 725 741.
  • Demon Ancestor Rahu — Dangerous would-be ally who offers the power needed to enhance the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation 573 574.
  • Wuzhiqi — Former disciple who later abuses and humiliates Tongtian in the Heavenly Prison after Tongtian loses his power 607 619.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Investiture of the Gods Dispute

Tongtian refuses to sign the Investiture of the Gods List, rejecting demands that Jie Sect disciples be sent to Heaven as gods. He instead orders his followers to locate the person of the Investiture of the Gods and later accepts Shen Gongbao as his personal disciple, hoping to seize the initiative in the coming tribulation 73 77 79.

Decline of the Jie Sect

The abolition of the Demon Court causes accumulated slaughter karma to recoil upon the Jie Sect. Tongtian fails to stabilize the sect's declining fortune despite his Heavenly Dao Sage cultivation, exposing the limits of his authority and deepening the disciples' desperation 172.

As his disciples are defeated, killed, or humiliated during the tribulation, Tongtian shifts from restrained maneuvering to increasingly reckless intervention. He leads a rescue mission to Mount Sumeru for Wuyun Xian and later authorizes broad attacks against Western Qi and Great Qin 327 484.

Break with Dao Ancestor Hongjun

When Hongjun offers Tongtian the Pangu Banner at the risk of losing his favor, Tongtian chooses the treasure. The decision isolates him from Hongjun, Yuanshi Tianzun, Grand Pure Laozi, and the wider Mystic Sect 453 456.

Although he later joins Hongjun in the Chaos Void for the Jie Sect's sake, Tongtian's resentment and wounded pride remain unresolved 455 456.

Final Battle and Fall

Tongtian orders Duobao to deploy the Ten Thousand Immortals Sword Formation and forces the Investiture of the Gods Tribulation toward a decisive battle 549 550. After accepting Rahu's assistance and consuming Heavenly Dao origin, he reaches the mid-stage of the Heavenly Dao Sage realm and reforges the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation into a Saint-slaying Chaos Treasure 579 581.

His Dao heart deteriorates under the Heavenly Dao's influence. In his desperation, he attacks former allies, severs the pillars supporting the heavens, detonates his formation, and devastates the Primordial World. Ling Xiao counters the catastrophe with the Tongtian Jianmu, leaving Tongtian condemned by even his own remaining disciples 590 593 594.

Heavenly Prison

Tongtian loses his Hongmeng Purple Energy and Saintly position, becoming a prisoner of the Heavenly Court. He refuses to submit despite abuse from Wuzhiqi, the execution of Our Lady of Golden Spirit, and repeated taunts from other prisoners 607 612 619.

Eventually, he accepts Ling Xiao's offer to leave prison and rebuild the Jie Sect, recognizing that continued defiance offers no future 621.

Rebuilding at Mount Cangwu

Reduced to a Quasi-Sage, Tongtian establishes a new Biyou Palace at Mount Cangwu and creates cultivation dwellings for prospective disciples 660. Though initially feared, he eventually attracts tens of thousands of cultivators after reassurance that the Heavenly Court will not suppress them for joining him 666.

He accepts Jin Ling as a direct disciple, attempts to protect her from her demonic influence and calamitous fate, and eventually becomes her Dao Companion. The relationship costs him much of his remaining Supreme Pure origin and leaves the revived Jie Sect vulnerable to further schemes 687 688 725.

Death and Legacy

Tongtian dies alongside Jin Ling. His surviving disciples, led by Xuan Daozi, reorganize into the Supreme Pure Sword Sect and retreat to the North Sea, preserving his teachings and memory 741.
