Background / History

Iruka is a Chunin and an approachable Ninja Academy instructor. Kakashi considers him the appropriate person to assess Ye Lan’s basic ninja education, describing him as good-natured and capable despite his Chunin rank. Iruka previously taught Naruto’s class and was one of the few people to believe in Naruto after Mizuki framed him; he was injured while helping Naruto defeat Mizuki, earning a central place in Naruto’s life. 14

When Kakashi brings Ye Lan to the academy, Iruka assesses whether the newcomer knows the Clone Technique. He demonstrates the technique and expects Ye Lan to train before returning for a graduation examination, but Ye Lan replicates the hand seals after watching them once and creates two clones. Astonished by this talent, Iruka awards Ye Lan a Konoha forehead protector and officially recognizes him as a Genin. 21 22

Later, Iruka meets Ye Lan at Ichiraku Ramen, praises his extraordinary learning speed, and offers to treat him. During their meal, he speaks warmly of Naruto’s resilience and potential. 37 38

At Ichiraku, Iruka identifies Xiao Jing as a careful local bully whose victims are often too afraid to report him. He initially urges Ye Lan to wait for a clear opportunity, explaining that ordinary civilian disputes fall outside the usual scope of a ninja’s intervention; nevertheless, he states that he would not ignore more serious wrongdoing. He silently observes Ye Lan defeat Xiao Jing and later admits that Ye Lan indirectly helped him confront a person who had bullied him during his own Genin years. 39 40 42 44

Personality

Iruka is friendly, encouraging, and attentive to young ninja. He teaches Ye Lan patiently rather than dismissing his lack of familiarity with the Clone Technique, and he immediately recognizes the significance of Ye Lan’s talent. 21 22

He is deeply protective of Naruto and sees beyond Naruto’s reputation as a prankster. Iruka identifies Naruto’s loneliness, effort, and ability to remain cheerful despite growing up without parents. 38

His response to Xiao Jing shows caution shaped by his duty and experience: he weighs the lack of evidence, the risks of retaliation, and the restrictions placed on ninja before acting. Even so, he respects Ye Lan’s defense of Ichiraku and Rainbow, and privately shares that Xiao Jing had once bullied him. 39 40 43 44
