Background
Konohamaru is the grandson of the Third Hokage. At roughly four or five years old, he attends the Ninja Academy and trains under both his grandfather and Ebisu. He considers himself a prodigy and declares that he knows all chakra types, though he identifies Fire Release as his specialty. 14 17
At the Academy gate, he encounters Kakashi Hatake and immediately challenges him, believing that defeating a Jonin would bring him closer to surpassing his grandfather and becoming Hokage. Kakashi stops his charge simply by holding him at arm’s length. 14
Kakashi then directs Konohamaru toward Ye Lan as a new challenger. Konohamaru dismisses Ye Lan based on his appearance, but agrees to a competition in the forest with Kakashi as witness. Rather than fight physically, the two make a wager over whether Konohamaru can learn Ye Lan’s ninjutsu. 15 16 17
Ye Lan demonstrates Great Fire Annihilation, a Fire Release far beyond Konohamaru’s Great Fireball Technique. Konohamaru is nearly caught in the attack and is protected only when Kakashi erects an Earth Release sphere. Shaken by the difference in power, he nevertheless insists that he can learn the technique. 18 19
Konohamaru agrees to master Great Fire Annihilation within one week. If he succeeds, Ye Lan will teach him five further ninjutsu; if he fails, he must acknowledge Ye Lan as his big brother. He skips returning to the Academy in order to train for the wager. 20
Appearance
Konohamaru is a small child of about four or five with large eyes and an initially innocent-looking face that is often offset by an arrogant expression. 14
- Often stands with his chest out or hands on his hips while boasting. 16 18
- Carries a kunai when challenging opponents. 14
- Repeatedly calls Ye Lan “pretty boy” because of Ye Lan’s fair complexion. 15 19
Personality
Konohamaru is intensely ambitious, declaring himself the future Hokage and measuring his progress by his ability to challenge stronger shinobi, including his grandfather and Kakashi. His confidence frequently becomes arrogance: he judges Ye Lan as weak on sight and assumes that any ninjutsu Ye Lan offers will be easy to learn. 14 15 17
Despite his boasting, he is courageous and persistent. He accepts Ye Lan’s terms without hesitation, remains determined after witnessing Great Fire Annihilation, and chooses focused training over returning to class. 16 19 20
Abilities & Skills
Fire Release
Konohamaru identifies Fire Release as his strongest affinity and is learning the Great Fireball Technique under Ebisu’s instruction. 17 18
- Great Fireball Technique — considers it a powerful, wide-area Fire Release technique and expects to master it soon. 17 18
- Great Fire Annihilation — receives instruction from Ye Lan and undertakes a one-week attempt to learn it; no successful mastery is documented. 19 20
- Claims to know all chakra types due to his lineage and training, but only Fire Release proficiency is specifically established. 17
Shadow Clone Jutsu
Konohamaru states that he can already perform the Shadow Clone Jutsu, which he cites as a reason the Academy has little left to teach him. 20
Determination
- Accepts challenges from opponents far stronger than himself, including Kakashi and Ye Lan. 14 16
- Commits to intensive practice after realizing the gap between his own Great Fireball Technique and Ye Lan’s Great Fire Annihilation. 18 20
Equipment
- Kunai — used when charging at Kakashi during their first encounter. 14
Relationships
- Third Hokage — Konohamaru’s grandfather and the benchmark he intends to surpass in order to become Hokage. 14 15
- Ebisu — one of his instructors; teaches him and praises his progress with the Great Fireball Technique. 17 18
- Kakashi Hatake — an admired Jonin whom Konohamaru challenges; Kakashi easily restrains him, later arranges his challenge with Ye Lan, and witnesses the wager. 14 15 17
- Ye Lan — rival and prospective teacher. Konohamaru initially belittles him, then seeks to learn Great Fire Annihilation from him under a one-week bet. 15 19 20
