Background / History

Madara was one of the two monstrous figures of the Warring States Period, standing beside Hashirama Senju. After the Senju and Uchiha reconciled, the two helped establish the era of hidden villages, though Madara never accepted Hashirama's vision of peace. 6 11

He was defeated and believed killed by Hashirama at the Valley of the End. Before that battle, however, Madara implanted Izanagi into his right Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan through a Transcription Seal. He rewrote his death at the cost of that eye, left behind a Shadow Clone as a corpse, and escaped Konoha in secret. 14

After reviving, Madara implanted Hashirama's flesh into his own body. The graft eventually gave him Wood Release and formed Hashirama's face on his left chest, but its deeper fusion took decades. At seventy-one, while his body was failing, the completed union of Indra and Asura's chakra awakened his Rinnegan. 14

The Rinnegan allowed Madara to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, whose life-force tubes prolonged his life. He also entrusted his Rinnegan to the Uzumaki child Nagato for safekeeping, intending to reclaim it later. 14 36

Madara is defined by immense pride, contempt for weakness, and an obsessive need to prove that Hashirama's ideals failed. He views the continuing wars between villages as proof that only his own vision can bring peace. 45 82
