Background / History

Rise to Power

Centuries before Cooler's confrontation with Xiaya, King Cold fought King Davido over territory. Although Cold drove Davido back, his injuries forced him to withdraw from active rule and divide his territories between his sons. Cooler came to control northern North Galaxy, while Frieza ruled the south 87 175 179.

As Cooler grew stronger, he became increasingly unwilling to obey his father. He believed his strength had surpassed Cold's, but remained cautious of the authority and fear his father had accumulated over centuries. Cold's possible return to active rule threatened Cooler's position 86 87.

Loss of the Armored Squadron

Cooler secretly sent his Armored Squadron to search for the Spirit Tree Fruit, a treasure capable of increasing power. Xiaya and Selyne intercepted the original squadron, and Xiaya killed Dore, Neiz, and its captain, Salza, also rendered as Shaviza 96 97 101.

Cooler regarded their deaths as the loss of useful pawns rather than a personal tragedy. His greater concern was that the search for the fruit might become known to King Cold and Frieza. He ordered a personal investigation and selections for a replacement special forces unit, eventually placing Oros in command 101 103.

First Battle with Xiaya

When Xiaya attacked Cooler's Third Squad on Bichu Star, Cooler redirected his fleet there. His arrival exerted enough pressure to disturb space and interfere with Xiaya's Instant Transmission 103 104.

After Xiaya admitted destroying the Armored Squadron, Cooler twice offered to recruit him. Xiaya refused, and Cooler overwhelmed him while withholding his full strength. Even Xiaya's temporal abilities could not overcome the difference in power 105 108 110.

Cooler broke free of Xiaya's Time Stop, inflicted severe injuries, and concluded that his opponent was dead. He then destroyed Bichu Star with a Death Ball. Xiaya had actually concealed his aura underground and escaped through Instant Transmission 107 108.

Spirit Tree Search and Final Battle

Cooler's pursuit of the Spirit Tree Fruit intensified as his conflict with King Cold escalated. He intended to use its power to bring all of North Galaxy under his control. Oros identified Bahad Star in the East Galaxy as the most promising location, and Madish and Duke were sent to investigate 178 179.

After his forces located the tree, Cooler set out for Bahad Star. Detecting the powerful energy of Xiaya's battle with Slug, he demanded dangerous acceleration despite warnings that his spacecraft could not withstand it 188 200.

On arrival, Super Saiyan Xiaya destroyed Cooler's spacecraft and most of his accompanying forces with a Time-Space Shattering Bullet. The Spirit Tree had already been destroyed. Cooler survived the attack but was injured and enraged 203 204.

Xiaya dominated Cooler in his base form and repeatedly prevented him from transforming. Cooler sacrificed an arm to escape and also lost his tail. During the confrontation, Xiaya revealed that he was the youth Cooler had nearly killed on Bichu Star five years earlier 205 206.

Cooler hid among distant rubble and reached his final form. Its 470 million battle power exceeded Xiaya's stated 380 million in Super Saiyan form, but his missing arm remained a disadvantage. Their destructive battle eventually left both severely injured and exhausted 206 208.

An unidentified orange-haired woman intervened and nullified their attacks. Later identified as Zanja, she killed Cooler with a single kick. King Cold withdrew without retrieving his son's body, while Frieza abandoned expansion into the East Galaxy and turned his attention toward Cooler's former territories 208 210.

Appearance

Personality

Cooler is ambitious and calculating, but not recklessly defiant toward every opponent. He declines Salza's suggestion to exploit Frieza's weakened forces because territorial expansion would provoke King Cold. Nevertheless, he pursues the Spirit Tree Fruit even after the search creates open friction with his father 87 178.

He treats subordinates as expendable assets. Their deaths matter chiefly because they reduce his military strength or damage his pride; he expects loyalty even when it requires fighting an unbeatable enemy. Against weaker opponents, he enjoys prolonging their struggle. This arrogance allows Xiaya to survive their first encounter and later return as a much stronger enemy 101 107 108 195.
