Background / History

Ereshkigal arose from the Divine Foundation stripped from the Origin Mother Goddess Tiamat after the Battle of Creation. Alongside her twin counterpart Ishtar, she embodies one half of life’s complete divine power: Ishtar governs fertility and growth, while Ereshkigal governs decay, death, and the earth beneath the world. 159

Fate made Ereshkigal the goddess who would remain in the desolate Underworld and manage its souls. Although this granted her supreme authority there, it also deprived her of the freedom to see the sun or live on the surface. She has maintained the balance of life and death since the Golden Age, while resentment toward Ishtar’s freedom and popularity steadily accumulated. 29

During the crisis surrounding Uruk, Ereshkigal became a bound pillar of the Triple Goddess Alliance. Her apparent role in spreading plague and threatening humanity concealed an effort to collect and preserve souls, particularly those of Kusa, within the Underworld until they could potentially return in a later age. 16 37 46

Samael’s arrival as her pet gradually changed her outlook. After initially intending to protect humanity only through confinement beneath the earth, she rejected Gilgamesh’s offer of the Holy Grail and chose to stand with humanity, hoping to let both civilization and the Underworld’s flowers bloom. 28 103

Appearance

Ereshkigal is a golden-haired goddess whose appearance combines regal Sumerian ornamentation with the somber imagery of the Underworld. In her descent body, she resembles the human host shared with Ishtar. 25 78

After Samael confronts her belief that humanity cannot defy fate, Ereshkigal abandons the Holy Grail and joins Uruk’s side. Her decision marks her rejection of passive protection through death in favor of protecting life and civilization directly. 103
