Background / History

Athena is the daughter of Zeus and Metis, the Queen and Goddess of Wisdom. Metis merged with Zeus because of an ancient Titan curse, and Athena's birth was enabled by her mother's sacrifice. Athena learned her true parentage while still young, though she had already deduced it herself. 240 255 268

During her gestation, Metis and the Serpent Mother exchanged blood with the Gorgon sisters' embryos. This gives Athena a resonant blood connection with Medusa, Stheno, and Euryale; because she was born first, she is regarded as their elder sister. 230

Samael and Hina raised Athena as their daughter while her existence remained hidden from Olympus. Her childhood was spent among the residents of Arima Cave and the Chalcidian Marshlands, where she formed close bonds with the Gorgon sisters, Themis, and Chiron. 239 254 255

As Athena matured, she studied under Chiron and led groups of Typhon's offspring in practical lessons on anatomy, hunting, and the structure of life. Gaia later acknowledged Athena as a victim of Zeus and Metis's tragedy. The Earth Mother blessed her with Origin Divinities of Earth, Sky, and Ocean, raised her to Sovereign level, and granted her Divine Cloth. Athena declined Gaia's offer to return to Olympus, choosing to remain with Gaia and her companions instead. 268 269

During Typhon's invasion, Athena persuaded Themis and Medusa to support Olympus by arguing that even a flawed order was preferable to none, and that the gods would not be Typhon's final victims. She repeatedly repelled Typhon, gained Nike's allegiance, forged the Victory Goddess Scepter, and received the title of Goddess of Wisdom and War. 319 322

Although Zeus offered to share his authority and grant her a place among the Twelve Olympians, Athena accepted only the divine offices of Wisdom and War. She refused to remain on Olympus, renounced her Olympian position, and became Athens' guardian deity. 319

Athena, Themis, and Medusa subsequently founded the Council on a mountain northwest of the Acropolis to maintain order between gods and humans. After Athena and Themis defeated Ares and Poseidon respectively, the institution became widely known as Mount of the God of War. 319 320
