Background / History

Artoria was born to fulfill Britain’s hopes. She drew the Sword of Selection, defeated King Vutigen, expelled the Saxon invaders, won the Twelve Battles of the Dynasty, and established Holy Capital Camelot as the King of Knights. Her bond with the Holy Lance Rhongomyniad, however, gradually sealed away her emotions and selfhood, transforming her into the detached Lion King who would preserve Britain’s mysteries at any cost 876.

She publicly revealed herself as a woman during her coronation as Britain’s queen. There, she declared her intention to establish the Holy Round Table Domain and the Perfect Ideal City 834. As the Lion King, she enacted the Holy Selection and Purification: only souls she judged pure would accompany her, while the unselected were eliminated 849.

Rhongomyniad’s nature as the Tower of End made Artoria increasingly cold and absolute. It anchored and maintained the world, but its integration with her soul eroded her compassion until she would become a “human pillar” for Britain’s Age of Gods 852. Kay, Morgan, Merlin, and Samael attempted to weaken this integration and restore her humanity 852 876.

The intervention split Artoria’s self. Her awakened human side became Artoria Cast, a childlike “Child of Prophecy” called to draw the Selection Staff and save a dying world, while the divine Lion King became the goddess ruling the mental world created by the Holy Lance 867 876. Guided by Samael within that dream, Cast witnessed the consequences of the Lion King’s salvation, opposed the Tower of End, and recovered Artoria’s humanity 869 871 875 876.

Although given the chance to live without Rhongomyniad, Artoria chose to accept its burden again after learning that Britain’s future would collapse without its sustaining mysteries. She resolved to protect Britain despite knowing that this choice would cost her humanity, earn humanity’s hatred, and lead to a tragic end 876. After Samael’s apparent sacrifice, she began a kingdom-wide search for the Holy Grail, believing it essential to sustaining Britain for a thousand years 876 877.

Artoria is most often depicted as a golden-haired, green-eyed knight or monarch. Her appearance varies substantially between her Lion King, Artoria Cast, and modern Saber manifestations 867 876 1029.

Before her deification, Artoria was compassionate, trusting, and unable to ignore others’ suffering. Her tendency to believe the best in people made her easy to deceive, a trait Merlin repeatedly tried to correct 840 868. She remains notably fond of food, especially roasted meat and large meals 831 869 874.

As the Lion King, Rhongomyniad’s influence left her emotionally detached and capable of ordering slaughter without hesitation. Kay described her as becoming devoid of emotion, compassion, hope, and joy 840 852. Even so, glimpses of her former empathy remained: she apologized to Morgan after understanding the harm caused by her words 840.

Artoria Cast embodies the humanity suppressed by the Holy Lance. She is kind, earnest, naïve, and determined to protect both the dead and living even when doing so is dangerous or impractical 868 872. Her journey teaches her that salvation built on sacrifice and indifference is not the ideal she wishes to uphold 871 875.

The modern Saber incarnation is proud, protective of Alicephil, and quick to anger when she believes her Master is threatened. She is burdened by fragmented memories, identity confusion, and instinctive hatred toward Samael, whom she mistakes for the Arthur Pendragon who defeated the Storm King 1065 1077 1129.

After the attempt to remove Rhongomyniad splits her self, Artoria’s human side journeys as Artoria Cast under Samael’s guidance. She witnesses the dying world, confronts the cruelty behind the Lion King’s ideal kingdom, and defeats the divine will within her mindscape 867 869 871 875 876.

Quest for the Holy Grail

Having reaccepted the Holy Lance for Britain’s sake, Artoria orders the Knights of the Round Table to search the country for the Holy Grail, treating the artifact as the missing piece needed to preserve her kingdom 876 877.

Fuyuki Holy Grail War

A Saber calling herself Artoria serves Alicephil in Fuyuki. She struggles with missing memories and repeatedly attacks Samael under the belief that he is Arthur Pendragon, her mortal enemy 1047 1065 1069. Samael later reveals that this Saber is a remnant of the Storm King, Britain’s calamity defeated by the true Lion King 1077.

Artoria nevertheless chooses Alicephil over the Einzbern and Enzworth families’ plans, fighting beside Samael to rescue her Master and insisting that Alicephil must decide her own wishes 1106 1108.

Return to Britain

Artoria eventually pulls the Golden Sword from its pedestal, becomes King of Britain, and renames London as Lundenwic 1158. After a thousand-year pilgrimage in Avalon, she returns with the Knights of the Round Table and rebuilds Britain alongside Morgan, serving as queen while Morgan manages internal governance as prime minister 1251 1261.

Cheruk Tribe Incident

In a later incident, Artoria is branded a traitor to the Cheruk Tribe after injuring its young leader, Hedon. In a transformed state with talons and enhanced strength, she overpowers and captures Tini 1424.
