Background / History
Chakra-Fruit harvesting
The clan expands by transporting Ten-Tails to other planets, cultivating them into Divine Trees, and allowing the trees to drain planetary natural energy into Chakra Fruits. Ōtsutsuki grow stronger by consuming those fruits, treating the Ten-Tails as an obedient harvesting tool 270 277 280.
Kaguya and Isshiki were dispatched together to plant a Divine Tree on the Ninja World. Kaguya, whose position and strength were initially below Isshiki's, was meant to be fed to the Ten-Tails; she instead ambushed him, consumed the fruit herself, and later became sealed by her sons 277 279.
Ancestral land and the God King
The clan's original homeland collapsed through overdevelopment, warfare, and other destruction. A legendary Ōtsutsuki selected several life-bearing worlds as backup sites; the present ancestral land is one such refuge 576.
The ancestral land operates through a rigid hierarchy. Lower-ranked Ōtsutsuki tend resources and perform labor, while vassals perform the hardest work and Guardians serve stronger clan members. The mountain is arranged by strength, with its more powerful residents having comprehended Order 630.
During the battle at the ancestral land, the Ōtsutsuki God King revealed that many clan members were his genetically altered clones. True Ōtsutsuki were assigned to guard and sacrifice themselves for those clones, whom the God King considered expendable 632.
War with the Ninja World
After repeated incursions by members such as Kin, Zen, E, and Yo, the Ōtsutsuki began openly targeting the Ninja World's chakra, Tailed Beasts, and Divine Tree-related power 557 573 575.
Kitahara Kaede and the Ninja World's forces infiltrated the ancestral land and attacked its God King. Kaede ultimately surpassed the God King's understanding of temporal power and erased him 631 634 639.
With the God King gone, Kaede identified the surviving clan members as a continuing danger: their clone nature could allow the God King's will to return through them. Rather than immediately exterminate every survivor, he proposed keeping the clan under control and preventing them from becoming Order Users 639 713.
Organization and Lineages
| Group | Position and characteristics |
|---|---|
| Direct lineage | Highly privileged Ōtsutsuki regarded as superior to commoners, vassals, and slaves; their physical power greatly exceeds that of ordinary beings 363 379 |
| Extreme Evil lineage | A renowned direct-descendant lineage with an ancestral star on Kaede's route. Its past reputation was formidable enough that lesser Ōtsutsuki were said not to compare to it 423 430 |
| Stone Mountain Clan | A clan within the Extreme Evil lineage that specializes in body refinement. Its members devote themselves heavily to cultivation, and its Grand Elder maintains an Ancestral Hall 470 491 |
| Shidō | A branch lineage that replaces body parts with tools or weapons. Their integrated weapons can evolve and affect an opponent's Domain 509 |
| Ghost Language Clan | A dangerous lineage expelled by the Ōtsutsuki due to its unpredictable cultivation techniques. The Stone Mountain Clan's Ancestral Hall was built to resist its influence 490 491 |
| Guardians and vassals | Auxiliary forces beneath the clan's elite. Guardians can reach at least Kage-level strength, while vassals are treated as laborers and disposable tools 616 630 |
Traits and Abilities
Chakra-Fruit Cultivation
The clan's central practice is converting a planet's natural energy into a Chakra Fruit through a Ten-Tails and Divine Tree.
- Ōtsutsuki can transport Ten-Tails to suitable worlds and may plant multiple Divine Trees to improve their harvest 277 280.
- A clan member can be designated as a sacrifice for the Ten-Tails' cultivation process 277.
- Chakra Fruits are the source of the clan's continued evolution and its campaigns against chakra-bearing worlds 270 574.
- This process devastates the targeted planet and makes its inhabitants potential resources rather than equals 575.
Innate Physiology and Dōjutsu
Ōtsutsuki are naturally powerful chakra-based lifeforms with exceptional physical traits.
- Clan members possess the Byakugan and are stated to have attained the Rinnegan 270.
- They possess vast chakra reserves, high-speed movement, and powerful bodies; even Mana, identified as a slave, could pressure Itachi through raw physical force 271 379.
- They do not need food, as their bodies regulate themselves 279.
- Some members manifest horns, Karma markings, or transformed states when releasing greater power 281 299.
Space, Karma, and Reincarnation
Spatial techniques and survival abilities are common among powerful clan members, though their exact forms differ by individual.
- Isshiki possesses a private dimension and can create spatial rifts 280.
- Kin relies on spatial movement, while other Ōtsutsuki and Guardians employ spatial distortion in battle 559 623.
- Kaguya identifies the clan as effectively immortal and attributes Isshiki's likely survival to a “Contract” ability 277.
- Some Ōtsutsuki retain the ability to counterattack after mental destruction because of a reincarnation characteristic 625.
Order and Higher Powers
The clan contains individuals who have comprehended Order, with the strongest pursuing godhood.
- Higher-ranked residents of the ancestral land have comprehended Order, while Guardians and vassals occupy lower positions in the hierarchy 630.
- Ōtsutsuki Zen's Order can reduce an opponent's strength while increasing his own, and it carries a subtle emotional manipulation effect 572.
- The God King possessed power comparable to Kaede's and had reached the threshold of godhood, but lacked Kaede's superior understanding of temporal power 604 634.
- The clan considers the accumulation of Chakra Fruits a path toward becoming gods 558.
