Background

Kakashi lost his mother at birth, while his father—the Konoha White Fang—later died by suicide. As a young prodigy, he prioritized mission completion so strictly that other teams were unwilling to work with him. Minato Namikaze took personal responsibility for him after his father's death, partly to look after his emotional well-being. 8 127 214

Following Minato and Kushina's deaths, Kakashi spent ten years in the Anbu. During that time, Danzō manipulated him into attempting to assassinate the Third Hokage; after the attempt failed, Hiruzen kept him in the Anbu. Kakashi had also served as Naruto's bodyguard from before Naruto's birth. 9 13

Upon leaving the Anbu, Kakashi was assigned as the Jonin Instructor of the 47th Class, leading Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Kitahara Kaede. Kakashi is pragmatic, observant, and deeply shaped by loss. His childhood emphasis on missions over people gave way to a more protective attitude toward his students; he is especially attentive to Naruto's progress and struggles with guilt over Sasuke's connection to Itachi and the Uchiha massacre. 13 214
