Background / History

Before the Investiture of the Gods Calamity, the Sect of Interception was renowned as the Primordial Era's foremost sect, with “ten thousand immortals paying homage.” Its influence was described as surpassing the combined Daoist, Chan, and Buddhist sects. In the original predicted course of the calamity, its disciples would be killed or placed on the Investiture of the Gods Scroll, while Sect Master Tongtian would be imprisoned by Hongjun and the sect would cease to exist in name 1 9 31.

The sect’s doctrine conflicts directly with factions seeking to restrict cultivation and control Heavenly Secrets. It teaches that all beings may cultivate the Dao, while its opponents view its broad acceptance of disciples as a threat to their hierarchy and plans for the calamity 103 190 388.

Under Qin Hong’s influence, the sect avoids its predicted destruction. It recruits pivotal figures, exposes schemes against its disciples, wins the Investiture of the Gods Calamity, and later redirects the benefits of the Journey to the West Calamity toward its own Great Dao of Sentient Beings 46 230 455 512.

Doctrine

The Sect of Interception holds that all beings are equal and possess the right to seek the Dao.

  • It accepts disciples based on character rather than birth, lineage, or race; those of good character may receive cultivation teachings and sect protection even without exceptional talent 34 44.
  • Its central ideal is to “intercept” a remaining sliver of opportunity from heaven and earth, allowing beings to cultivate and pursue immortality 103 378.
  • Sect Master Tongtian frames this mission as fulfilling Pangu’s intention that all created beings should have an opportunity to cultivate 190.
  • The later Great Dao of Sentient Beings expands this ideal beyond formal sect membership, spreading teachings among all living beings 389 512.

Core Disciples

The four chief disciples under Tongtian are Daoist Duobao, Saintess Jinling, Saintess Wudang, and Saintess Guiling. They are regarded as the foremost second-generation disciples of the Daoist sects 1.

Other prominent disciples and affiliated members include:

  • San Xiao — Yun Xiao, Bi Xiao, and Qiong Xiao; sisters who fight together and protect fellow disciples 22 211.
  • Zhao Gongming — senior disciple who repeatedly joins San Xiao in defending the sect 216 397.
  • Shi Ji — disciple targeted by the Sect of Enlightenment’s schemes; defended by the sect’s wider membership 211 230.
  • Kong Xuan — Tongtian’s personal disciple and the Great Shang Dynasty’s Grand General 172.
  • Yang Jian, Yang Chan, and Yao Ji — accepted into the sect after Qin Hong intervenes against the Heavenly Court 46 70.
  • Thousand-Mile Eye and Wind-Following Ear — demons personally recruited by Qin Hong 145 146.
  • Zhenyuanzi — joins after Qin Hong offers a path toward Sainthood; later publicly declares his allegiance 265 320.
  • Jiang Ziya — joins after the Investiture of the Gods appointments are completed 458.

Scale and Structure

  • The sect has more than ten thousand disciples gathered under Tongtian, alongside later generations and mounts 106.
  • Second-generation disciples sit before third- and fourth-generation disciples during major assemblies 106.
  • Its overwhelming membership is a recurring military advantage; Tongtian openly identifies numerical strength as one of the sect’s defining traits 190.
  • During the conflict around Chentang Pass, its forces are organized into teams so that disciples can respond collectively instead of being isolated and outnumbered 304.

Membership and Recruitment

The Sect of Interception is widely desired by beings excluded or demeaned elsewhere because it does not discriminate by background or species.

  • Yang Jian and Yang Chan seek the sect because they expect acceptance despite their mixed heritage and outsider status 44 46.
  • Thousand-Mile Eye and Wind-Following Ear view joining as an extraordinary elevation from insignificant demons without status or backing 145 146.
  • The Dragon Clan joins after becoming dissatisfied with life under the Heavenly Court and embracing the sect’s equality-centered doctrine 182 184.
  • After the Sect of Enlightenment’s schemes are publicly exposed, large numbers of beings gather outside Golden Ao Island seeking apprenticeship 238.
  • Di Xin’s decree makes all humans disciples of the Sect of Interception and formally binds the sect to the Human Race’s Fortune 345.

Formations and Resources

Immortal Slaying Sword Formation

Sect Master Tongtian deploys the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation after Heavenly Lord of Original Beginning attacks Qin Hong. Its establishment marks the open, irreconcilable war between the Sect of Interception and the Sect of Enlightenment 225.

  • It gives the Sect of Interception a decisive advantage in the initial full-scale conflict 225.
  • Tongtian also invokes it when confronting the Four Saints’ attempt to destroy the sect 314.

Ten Absolute Formation

The Ten Heavenly Lords deploy this formation during the battle involving the Heavenly Court and later at Chentang Pass 190 304.

  • It requires ten cultivators to suppress its core simultaneously to break it 307.
  • The Sect of Enlightenment attempts to use ordinary disciples as expendable sacrifices to break it 307.
  • The Sect of Interception deliberately breaks it from within before the enemy can complete its plan 307.

Nine Bends Yellow River Formation

A feared formation used against the Sect of Enlightenment and its allies 310.

  • It traps Guangchengzi, True Man Puxian, and other Sect of Enlightenment Quasi-Saints after Shen Gongbao reveals his true allegiance 376.
  • The formation severely defeats the enemy force; many who escape have their top three flowers severed 378.

Myriad Immortals Formation

The Myriad Immortals Formation is Tongtian’s ultimate formation and has no stated upper limit to its power 346.

  • Duobao activates it immediately after the Sect of Interception becomes the Human Race’s sect, seeking to end the battle before further human casualties occur 346.
  • It holds the line at Jiebei Pass and turns the ground battle against Xiqi 348.
  • Houtu’s Earth Dao later enhances it, forcing the invading forces to retreat before Hongjun supplies the Innate Five Elements Pearls to dismantle it 407.

Cultivation Resources

  • Time Reversal Brush — given to Tongtian by Qin Hong; it extends time for the disciples’ cultivation and Dao comprehension 368.
  • Three Lights Divine Water — healing sacred medicine that limits casualties among sect disciples in prolonged battles 378.
  • Human Race Fortune — gained through Di Xin’s decree, increasing disciples’ cultivation prospects and affinity with humanity 345.

Major Conflicts

Investiture of the Gods Calamity

The calamity is presented as a coordinated attempt to weaken or destroy the Sect of Interception by filling the Investiture of the Gods Scroll with its disciples 31 208.

The Sect of Enlightenment attempts to lure out isolated disciples, beginning with Shi Ji, then ambush them through its Twelve Golden Immortals. Qin Hong instead turns these actions into a public exposure campaign, displaying the enemy’s schemes and rallying support for the Sect of Interception 211 213 230.

After Yuanshi attacks Qin Hong, Tongtian establishes the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation and openly declares war. The sect’s superior numbers, formations, and unity repeatedly overturn the Sect of Enlightenment’s plans 225 284.

The Sect of Interception ultimately wins the calamity and obtains the Investiture of the Gods Scroll. Qin Hong and Tongtian then convene the sect to determine candidates for the remaining divine offices 455.

Alliance with the Human Race

When the Sect of Enlightenment and Western Sect slaughter Great Shang soldiers, Duobao leads the Sect of Interception to intervene 345.

Di Xin responds by establishing the Sect of Interception as the Human Race’s sect. The Heavenly Dao confirms the decree, granting the sect a share of Human Race Fortune; the sect pledges to share prosperity and hardship with humanity 345.

Thereafter, sect disciples patrol Human Race territory to prevent enemy cultivators from attacking civilians 393 394.

Betrayal of Chang'er Dingguang Immortal

Chang'er Dingguang Immortal, one of Tongtian’s seven attendant immortals, betrays the sect during the battle at Jiebei Pass and gives the Six Souls Banner to Heavenly Lord of Original Beginning 348 349.

His betrayal is particularly damaging because Tongtian had trusted him as an older-generation attendant. Chang'er admits that Tongtian treated him well but defects because Yuanshi offered him greater rewards 349.

Conflict with Hongjun

Hongjun directly suppresses the Sect of Interception’s Fortune after its enemies fail to overcome it through ordinary conflict 388.

This attack targets the sect’s foundation and reflects the incompatibility between the sect’s doctrine of universal opportunity and Hongjun’s desire to control Heavenly Secrets 388. Tongtian, Qin Hong, Houtu, and Di Xin seek to counter this pressure through the Earth Dao, Human Dao, and Great Dao of Sentient Beings 389.

Journey to the West Calamity

Though publicly inactive for much of the Journey to the West Calamity, the Sect of Interception has secretly placed Tang Sanzang, Sun Wukong, and Golden Cicada under Qin Hong’s influence 486 510.

At Two Realms Mountain, Qin Hong orders the Buddhist scriptures replaced with the Sect of Interception’s teachings. Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing are exposed as hostile pawns and replaced by the Six-Eared Macaque and Ziyun using the Chaos Bead’s disguise 510.

Golden Cicada later spreads the Great Dao of Sentient Beings rather than Buddhist Tripitaka. The resulting Heavenly Merit benefits the Sect of Interception: Golden Cicada becomes a Saint, Sun Wukong becomes a Quasi-Saint, and Tongtian’s cultivation advances to the early fourth level of Primordial Chaos Grand Unity Golden Immortal 512.

Relationships

  • Sect Master Tongtian — founder and sect master; treats the sect’s protection and its doctrine as inseparable from his own ideals 190 225.
  • Qin Hong — Young Sect Master and principal strategist; expands the sect through recruitment, deception, and long-term planning 106 230 510.
  • Human Race — formal allied body and source of shared Fortune after Di Xin’s decree 345.
  • Dragon Clan — joins the sect after breaking from the Heavenly Court 184.
  • Sect of Enlightenment — chief rival; its repeated attempts to sacrifice Sect of Interception disciples to the Investiture of the Gods Scroll escalate into open war 208 225.
  • Western Sect — hostile rival that seeks to benefit from the sect’s destruction and later loses the Journey to the West Calamity’s rewards to the Sect of Interception 106 512.
  • Heavenly Court — hostile power opposed by the sect over its hierarchy and treatment of disciples and affiliated races 54 190.
  • Hongjun / Heavenly Dao — ultimate opposition; suppresses the sect’s Fortune and seeks its annihilation 388 512.

Trivia

  • The Sect of Interception’s reputation for accepting all beings makes even low-status demons regard membership as a major change in social standing 145 146.
  • Its disciples are consistently portrayed as responding collectively when a fellow member is threatened, rather than allowing enemies to isolate targets 217 230 397.
  • Chang'er Dingguang Immortal’s betrayal was anticipated by Qin Hong long before it occurred, leading Qin Hong to regard him as a potential internal threat 36.
