Background / History
Sun Wukong is known as the former Great Sage Equal to Heaven and the Victorious Fighting Buddha. He acknowledges that Erlang Shen has cultivated longer and is somewhat stronger, but remains confident in his own combat ability. 429
Before the Journey to the West begins, he becomes wary of his sworn brothers’ motives. After learning that their backers seek the Demon Race’s Fortune, he realizes that their brotherhood may not survive conflict with the Heavenly Court. 646 668
Jiang Zhen becomes a major adviser and protector in Sun Wukong’s life. Jiang explains the wider forces manipulating the Journey to the West, shields Wukong from the Underworld’s attempts to seize his soul, and promises to deal with the Five Elements Mountain and Golden Fillet Spell issues. 661 668

Sun Wukong normally appears as a monkey warrior. When preparing for battle, he discards his cassock, manifests armor, and summons the As-You-Will Golden Cudgel. 429

Personality
Sun Wukong is proud, blunt, and combative, readily challenging opponents or questioning authority when he believes the charges against him are unjust. When Li Jing leads a hundred thousand Heavenly Soldiers to Flower-Fruit Mountain, Wukong directly challenges the Heavenly Court’s reasoning rather than submit quietly. 671
Despite his bravado, he recognizes overwhelming strength and does not pretend to be invincible. He is visibly wary of Xing Tian, whose power far exceeds his own, and advises Tang Sanzang to avoid dangers he cannot reliably handle. 963 965
He is also protective of those under his care. Although he does not formally become Tang Sanzang’s disciple, he accepts responsibility for the monk’s safety and repeatedly scouts dangerous territory ahead of the pilgrimage party. 968 979

Sun Wukong confronts the Supergod World’s Tech Monkey after Du Kao attempts to use the latter as a test. He exposes the Tech Monkey as an amnesiac artificial being made from half a strand of monkey hair, defeats him decisively, and helps awaken his true identity. 595 596 597
Flower-Fruit Mountain and the Heavenly Court
At Flower-Fruit Mountain, Wukong hosts his six sworn brothers and introduces Jiang Zhen’s group as allies for the coming conflict with Heaven. When his brothers ultimately refuse to oppose the Heavenly Court, he accepts their departure but prepares to face the crisis himself. 646 668 669
Li Jing later arrives with one hundred thousand Heavenly Soldiers and Generals to capture him. Wukong responds with confidence, questions the legitimacy of the Heavenly Court’s accusations, and refuses to be intimidated. 671
Underworld Interference and the Journey to the West
The Underworld repeatedly attempts to lock Sun Wukong’s soul, but Jiang Zhen’s protection causes the Soul-Locking Chain to break. Houtu identifies Wukong as a key figure in an approaching tribulation, despite his comparatively lower cultivation. 663 665 668
After considering Jiang Zhen’s explanation that the Journey to the West can bring merit and improve the Golden Cudgel’s status, Wukong agrees to take part. His condition is that Jiang Zhen help him avoid the Five Elements Mountain suppression and Golden Fillet Spell. 668
Protector of Tang Sanzang
Wukong begins the western pilgrimage as Tang Sanzang’s protector rather than a formal Buddhist disciple. He warns Tang Sanzang about Black Wind Mountain, confronts Xing Tian after the War God abducts the monk, and later continues scouting threats such as Yellow Wind Ridge and White Tiger Ridge. 962 963 968 977
