Background / History

Sun Wukong originated from a remaining spirit stone used by Nuwa to repair the heavens. The stone had absorbed resentment directed at heaven, then fell into the mortal world and accumulated the essence of the sun and moon until it transformed into him. This origin left him innately fearless toward heaven and inclined toward defiance. 1170

He studied under Patriarch Bodhi, who bestowed the surname Sun and the Dharma name Wukong. As the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, he later caused disturbances in the Dragon Palace, the Underworld, and the Heavenly Court, convinced that he was acting righteously and pursuing freedom. 609 740

Qin Jun summoned Sun Wukong in the Great Sage's peak state and deliberately restored his past-life memories. Initially only moderately loyal, Sun Wukong was volatile, proud, and unwilling to accept restraint. Qin Jun confronted him over his failures as a king and revealed the future in which he would be suppressed, journey westward, and become the Victorious Fighting Buddha. The revelation shook Sun Wukong and led him to join the Great Qin Heavenly Court, where battle and freedom were offered in place of servitude. 602 609 610

During the Western Domain war, Sun Wukong was captured and restrained with an iron mask by Buddha. His rage and fractured state turned him into a Mad Demon, but Tang Sanzang's chanting and the intervention of the summoned Victorious Fighting Buddha gradually restored his consciousness. After fighting alongside his future self, Sun Wukong accepted the Victorious Fighting Buddha's memories and divinity when the latter merged into him. 740 765 777 778 790

His pride makes him impulsive and sensitive to disrespect, particularly when challenged by Yuan Hong or reminded of his past failures. However, he respects courage, responds to Qin Jun's confidence in him, and can restrain himself when directly ordered by his Emperor. 634 635 636

After merging with the Victorious Fighting Buddha, Sun Wukong retains the Great Sage's wildness while gaining a more reflective perspective.
