Background

Buddha's name was already a source of immense deterrence when Qin Jun first learned of him. Qin Jun believed even Sun Wukong—who had wreaked havoc in Heaven—had been suppressed by Buddha Tathagata, and warned his own subordinates to flee rather than challenge him. Golden Cicada likewise regarded Buddha as the strongest person he had known. 282 468

More than a decade before his open conflict with Qin Jun, Buddha appeared in the Western Domain, ended its disorder, and began spreading Buddhist teachings. He organized his sect along a hierarchy in which Golden Immortals could become Arhats and Grand Unity Realm cultivators could become Bodhisattvas. 685 739

Appearance

Buddha commonly appears as a serene monk, but his combat manifestations are colossal and intimidating. His Golden Buddha form has a compassionate face, restrained righteousness in its brow, and an aura powerful enough to force weaker beings to the ground. 583 584

  • Golden Buddha body ranging from thousands to ten thousand zhang in height. 583 774
  • Golden skin and an exceptionally durable body that resists powerful physical attacks. 774 817
  • Often appears in black robes and a golden mask while using the identity Dudu'e. 816 829
  • Can sit upon a Golden Lotus while chanting Buddhist scriptures. 779 833
  • Can manifest enormous numbers of arms behind his body. 776 779

Personality

Buddha presents himself as compassionate and committed to saving sentient beings, but he is highly pragmatic when protecting his sect and ambitions. He abandoned E Cang rather than exchange him for Sun Wukong, arguing that he had cast aside the self for the sake of all living beings; the decision provoked condemnation from allies and spectators alike. 771

His pursuit of Buddhist orthodoxy initially led him to use forceful methods in a world hostile to Buddhism. After defeat and imprisonment, he acknowledged that his greatest mistake had been targeting the Great Qin Heavenly Court and coveting Sun Wukong. He ultimately chose survival, revenge against Randeng, and service under Qin Jun over dying in prison. 791 806

As Qin Jun's subordinate, Buddha demonstrates restraint and honor. During the battle against the Nine Nether Underworld Emperor, he briefly considered exploiting the chaos against Qin Jun but rejected the thought because of his vow and Qin Jun's trust. 834

Story Role / Major Arcs

Conflict with the Great Qin Heavenly Court

Buddha arrived in the Southern Domain Heavenly World accusing Qin Jun of demonic possession and demanding retribution for slain Buddhist disciples. He overwhelmed Qin Jun's generals, but Kuafu exposed the attacker as a clone of Buddha's true body. 584 587

He later pursued the Candle Dragon in the Divine Realm. His clone attacked with a golden palm and attempted to seize the beast, but the Chongming Bird injured him while Sun Wukong resisted; Buddha ultimately withdrew while vowing to settle the karma with Qin Jun. 678 679 680

Rise of the Western Domain

Buddha defeated a clone of the Demon Ancestor in the Western Domain, causing his name to spread through surrounding domains and raising him to 49th on the Fate Machine Pavilion's Hero Ranking. 686 687

Randeng subsequently devastated the Western Domain and severely injured Buddha, leaving him unable to act recklessly against the growing Great Qin Heavenly Court. 730 757

Battle of Spirit Mountain

Buddha controlled Sun Wukong and mobilized the Western Domain Buddhist Sect against Qin Jun's forces. He revealed multiple clones, fought Xing Tian directly, and used Myriad Buddhas against the Great Qin army. 770 771 776

After being assaulted by Sun Wukong and the Victorious Fighting Buddha, Buddha recovered his past-life memories and dramatically increased his power. Patriarch Bodhi then entered the battle, decisively defeated him, and crippled his cultivation. 779 782 783

Submission to Qin Jun

While imprisoned, Buddha gave Qin Jun a Nirvana Bodhi fruit in exchange for a chance to live. Qin Jun permitted him to keep the Nirvana Bodhi Tree, then later offered to restore his power if he sincerely submitted. 791 806

Buddha accepted, motivated by the desire to cleanse his sect and exact revenge on Randeng. 806

Service at Yan Wang City

Under the disguise of Dudu'e, Buddha saved the True Martial Great Emperor and defeated the demonized Xia Yuanye. His Buddhist chants severely suppressed the Vengeful God possessing Xia Yuanye, though Xia ultimately escaped through resentment. 816 817 819 820

Buddha then fought the Nine Nether Underworld Emperor during the battle for Yan Wang City. His divine light neutralized Yin energy and his chants forced much of the opposing army to kneel, but the Underworld Emperor endured and retaliated with Nine Nether Dragon Qi and a black spear. 829 830 833 834

Rescue from the Ancient Buddha Realm

The Ancient Buddha Realm captured Buddha and held him under the pressure of six Saints. Qin Jun forced entry into the realm to rescue him, prompting its Ancient Buddhas to surrender rather than confront Qin Jun's party. 1236 1237

Buddha chose to spare the Ancient Buddha Realm because it had not harmed him. He severed one of his own arms in gratitude for Sun Wukong's life-saving intervention. 1237

Ascension Beyond Sainthood

Qin Jun restored Buddha to his peak Manifestation Saint Realm, then later used Limit Awakening to elevate him to the middle stage of the Heavenly Dao Saint Realm. 1050 1260

As a Heavenly Dao Saint, Buddha fought Patriarch Bodhi and activated the God Buddha Hegemonic Body. Their battle ended without either being able to decisively injure the other before they joined forces against the Primordial Demon Ancestor. 1263 1264

During the conflict between the Heavenly Court and Imperial Court, Qin Jun granted Buddha the Sacred Buddha Great Dao, a Primordial Chaos Tribulation, and another Limit Awakening, raising him to the Immortal Divine Sense Great Emperor Realm. 1781 1782
