Background / History

Yu Xiaogang arrived at Shrek Academy as Tang San's master and Flender's longtime companion. He immediately involved himself in Tang San's spirit-ring cultivation, privately listened to Zhao Wuji's report on the Soul Beast Forest hunt, and objected to Tang San obtaining the Thorny Devil Vine as his third ring because it conflicted with his preferred poison-oriented development path 49 50.

He sought to recruit talented students under his own name, first attempting to take Wu Qi as a second disciple and later trying to persuade Yu Tianheng to transfer to Shrek Academy. Wu Qi rejected the offer, while Yu Xiaogang regarded Yu Tianheng as an ideal addition to Shrek's lineup 52 95.

Flender appointed him teacher of the Shrek Six Monsters. Yu Xiaogang assessed Dai Mubai and Tang San through a sparring match and attempted to establish his authority within the team 53. During the Spirit Master Competition, he served as Shrek's team leader, instructed the team on rules and restraint, and successfully defended Shrek after its severely injured opponents prompted Prince Xue Xing to intervene 172 175.

Seeking a Twin Martial Souls cultivation method for Tang San, Yu Xiaogang traveled alone to Spirit City with Tang Hao's approval. He used a Papal Order to enter the Papal Hall and tried to reconcile with Bibi Dong, but she exposed that his real purpose was obtaining the method for his research and disciple 209 216 217. Golden Crocodile Douluo subsequently captured him; Spirit Hall accused him of stealing the Papal Order and impersonating an elder, then imprisoned him in Sky Prison 218 220.

His arrest led the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan to remove his name from its family tree to limit the clan's losses. Yu Luomian later secured his release from Spirit Hall at significant cost, presenting Yu Xiaogang with the expulsion notice upon his release 219 241 242.

Following the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan's annihilation, Yu Xiaogang was one of only three survivors alongside Liu Erlong and Yu Tianheng. He blamed himself for failing to awaken the Golden Sacred Dragon Martial Soul and wanted revenge after learning Spirit Hall had destroyed the clan 386 387.

He later became marginalized within the Clear Sky Sect after leading an unsuccessful expedition to the Destruction Mountain Range. Forced to reside with Liu Erlong in the Tang Sect, he grew cold and distant toward Tang Xiao and the Clear Sky Sect 492 493. At Wu Qi's coronation as Pope, Yu Xiaogang publicly accused Martial Soul Hall of instigating border conflict between the empires, seeking to expose the organization and force Wu Qi from office 553 560.

Appearance

Yu Xiaogang is physically weak compared with the high-level Spirit Masters around him. At the time of his capture in Spirit City, he possessed only level 29 Soul Power and could not resist Golden Crocodile Douluo 218.

Personality

Yu Xiaogang is intensely proud of his theoretical knowledge and often expects others to defer to his judgment. He scolded Zhao Wuji over Tang San's third spirit ring, treated polite recognition as praise, and approached Wu Qi's recruitment with a superior attitude 49 50 52.

His composure is repeatedly undermined when his own status, cultivation, or interests are involved. He became eager to pursue Immortal Herbs for himself, sought credit for Tang San's achievements, and reacted bitterly to revelations that Tang San's Blue Silver Grass possessed an extraordinary origin 130 287 574.

Despite these flaws, he is devoted to Tang San's development. He provided training plans, pursued a safer method for cultivating Tang San's dual Martial Souls, and remained concerned for Tang San's safety after the Spirit City crisis 204 243 279.
