Background & History

Kaido was formerly associated with the Rocks Pirates, where he knew Golden Lion Shiki, Charlotte Linlin, and Whitebeard. His history with Shiki was hostile enough that he regarded their past association as a grievance worth repaying in battle. 30 63

After defeating Kōzuki Oden, Kaido occupied Wano Country alongside Kurozumi Orochi. His rule and Orochi’s oppression left the country unable to recover, motivating Wano samurai to launch desperate attacks against the Beasts Pirates. Kaido also possessed one of the confirmed Red Poneglyphs. 30 80 83

Kaido spent much of his time drinking, fighting, or flying away from Onigashima while intoxicated. This habit repeatedly left his territory vulnerable, though he could remain clear-headed even while drunk. 80 83

Conflict with Golden Lion

Kaido and Golden Lion Shiki fought in the sky, clashing with Conqueror’s Haki, dragon fire, sword techniques, and Kaido’s Iron Mace. Their battle shattered a floating island and continued for days due to both combatants’ aerial mobility and endurance. 63

Golden Lion later attacked Onigashima again after losing much of his territory to a storm. Kaido moved their battle away from the island rather than risk casualties among his own forces. 83

First Clash with Minos

While Kaido was away, Minos and Wano’s resistance attacked Onigashima. Kaido returned in Azure Dragon form, incapacitating most of the samurai with Conqueror’s Haki and killing Hyogoro with a Heat Breath. 93

Kaido pursued Minos’s escaping ship over Wano’s Great Waterfall. Minos wounded him twice with Enma and Purple Flame, burning his spirit and energy badly enough to leave Kaido exhausted. Kaido withdrew rather than continue fighting over the sea while injured. 94

Collapse of the Beasts Pirates

Kaido later prepared to use Minos as a stepping stone to restore his reputation and rebuild the declining Beasts Pirates. He cooperated with the Marines and World Government, believing their combined force would make Minos impossible to escape. 224

The plan failed. Minos injured Kaido with a Flying Slash, severed one of his dragon horns through a spatial attack, destroyed his Iron Mace, and killed Jack. King was burned to death by the Great Vajra Heavenly Dragon, while Yamato was severely wounded. 225 226 227 228

After Golden Lion Shiki entered the conflict, Kaido escaped by deliberately worsening his wounds and falling into the sea. The Red-Haired Pirates subsequently overwhelmed the remaining Beasts Pirates and occupied Onigashima; Kaido fled after another unsuccessful fight. 229

Shichibukai Appointment and Capture

Driven from Wano and repeatedly defeated by Minos, Kaido became a lone commander. He accepted the World Government’s offer to become a Shichibukai, replacing Crocodile, because he needed resources and an advantage against Minos. 257

As a Shichibukai, Kaido assisted a Marine fleet’s assault on Wano by transforming into an Azure Dragon and using Flame Clouds to carry a Marine ship through the air. 263

Minos, newly evolved through the Yamata no Orochi Fruit, intercepted the fleet. His space-based Everything to Nothingness attack severely injured Kaido and destroyed the fleet. Kaido survived through Conqueror’s Haki coating, Armament Haki, dragon scales, and his Oni physique, but Minos captured him and used Black Particles to leave him semi-conscious. 264

Appearance

Kaido is a horned Oni whose most recognizable form is an enormous Azure Dragon. In human form, he bears two demon horns; after his battles with Minos, one horn was left cut in half and his body accumulated visible scars. 2 63 256

Personality

Kaido is impulsive, violent, and heavily dependent on alcohol. He enjoys drinking, seeking dangerous fights, and flying off to cause destruction or sleep in enemy territory, a pattern that has led to repeated captures and setbacks. 80

Despite this recklessness, Kaido is not thoughtless. He recognized when Golden Lion’s attack endangered Onigashima, moved their fight elsewhere, and later retreated from Minos and Shiki rather than die with his crew. 83 229

He values strength above loyalty and built the Beasts Pirates around a harsh hierarchy of combat power. This created a force with little unity: many subordinates respected Kaido’s power, but few remained loyal once his crew began collapsing. 226 246

Kaido is also pragmatic about status. Once he lost Wano, his crew, and much of his reputation, he discarded the dignity of being an Emperor and accepted a Shichibukai position to gain World Government support against Minos. 257
