Background / History
Inuyasha is the half-demon son of the great yokai Inu Taisho and the human Izayoi. Born around the time of his father's death, he retained little to no memory of Inu Taisho, though he later inherited Tetsusaiga, the sword his father used most often. 286 301
He and the miko Kikyo were separated by Naraku's deception. Naraku—then the half-demon born from the bandit Oni Spider—impersonated both of them to make each believe the other had betrayed them. Kikyo ultimately sealed Inuyasha to the Sacred Tree rather than killing him. 283 285
Minos freed Inuyasha by destroying Kikyo's sacred arrow. Inuyasha initially attacked his rescuer, but the destructive aura of Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi forced him to back down. 283 After learning that Kagome was Kikyo's reincarnation and that the Sacred Jewel of Four Souls had been sealed within her, he instinctively protected Kagome from Minos despite their immediate hostility. 284
Minos later revealed Naraku's role in Kikyo's death. Inuyasha traded the Black Pearl containing his father's tomb for this information, then chose to use the Sacred Jewel as bait to draw Naraku out. 285
Appearance
Inuyasha has silver-white hair, prominent dog ears, sharp claws, and a humanoid half-demon form. He usually wears the red Fire Rat Robe inherited from his family. 283
- Thick silver-white hair, repeatedly targeted by Sakura for collection 300 318
- Dog ears with notably sensitive hearing 283 318
- Sharp nails used for the Soul Shatter Claws 283
- Red Fire Rat Robe with exceptional defensive properties 283
Personality
Inuyasha is proud, hot-headed, and exceptionally stubborn. He frequently responds to concern or embarrassment with insults, denial, or bravado; even when outmatched, he refuses to concede verbally. 283 298
Beneath that attitude, he is compassionate and protective. His first strike after being freed was deliberately aimed away from Minos's head, and he avoided fighting Naraku's human guards because he did not want innocent people caught in the conflict. 283 309 He is especially protective of Kikyo and Kagome, though he struggles to express those feelings directly. 284 304
His rivalry with Sesshomaru is intense, but he does not truly wish for his older brother to die. After Sesshomaru was seemingly killed on Hōrai Island, Inuyasha repeatedly asked Minos whether he had survived. 321
Abilities & Skills
Half-Demon Physiology
Inuyasha possesses demonic power, enhanced physical ability, and natural recovery beyond that of humans.
- Recovered quickly from Sesshomaru's beating, aided by his demonic constitution and Fire Rat Robe. 288
- Can contend with strong yokai physically even before relying on Tetsusaiga. 283 297
- Has one recurring night of weakness each month. 323
- His half-demon nature allows him to handle Tetsusaiga, a blade designed to reject full-blooded yokai. 287 288
Soul Shatter Claws
Inuyasha's natural claw technique, used before and alongside his use of Tetsusaiga.
- Can be used in close combat without a weapon. 283
- He consciously moderated the technique when attacking Minos, aiming to cut hair rather than inflict a lethal wound. 283
- It is far less effective than Tetsusaiga against major opponents. 286
Tetsusaiga
Tetsusaiga is Inu Taisho's Fang Sword, left specifically for Inuyasha. It was initially sealed in his father's tomb and only awakened once he grasped the desire to protect something important. 287 288
- Produces powerful sword energy capable of tearing open the ground. 289
- Its barrier repels full-blooded yokai, while its power requires demonic energy to wield. 287 288
- Inuyasha awakened it by drawing on his feelings for Kikyo. 289
- Received a newly forged Tetsusaiga from Totosai. 317
Wind Scar
The Wind Scar is Tetsusaiga's signature offensive technique.
- Inuyasha mastered the move by the time of the confrontation with Demon Woman Rin and the Thunder Beast Brothers. 300
- It significantly elevated his combat power and let him confront stronger yokai directly. 300 317
Bakuryūha
Bakuryūha is a higher-level Tetsusaiga technique that returns an opponent's demonic aura through the Wind Scar.
- Requires Inuyasha to seize and reverse an enemy's demonic power at the moment of attack. 305
- His first attempt against Kaijinbo failed, demonstrating that he had not yet mastered the technique. 305
Combat Insight
Despite his impulsive behavior, Inuyasha can reason through unfamiliar abilities during battle.
- Correctly deduced that Sakura was a tsukumogami whose soul resided in a hidden host object after her body reformed from his attack. 297
- Chose to capture rather than immediately kill Naraku in order to uncover the truth. 309
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Tetsusaiga — Inu Taisho's Fang Sword and Inuyasha's primary weapon; later replaced or supplemented by a newly forged Tetsusaiga. 289 317
- Fire Rat Robe — A self-cleaning, self-regenerating robe that is resistant to weapons and armor-piercing attacks. A stolen sleeve eventually regrew. 283 325
- Black Pearl — Formerly held in his eye; contained the entrance to Inu Taisho's tomb. Inuyasha gave it to Minos in exchange for the truth about Kikyo and Naraku. 285
Relationships
- Kikyo — Former lover. Her sealing of Inuyasha followed Naraku's impersonation scheme; after her revival, Inuyasha remained devoted to restoring her weakened soul. 285 304 305
- Kagome Higurashi — Kikyo's reincarnation. They initially clash constantly, but Inuyasha protects her and accepts her as an ally. 284 298
- Minos — Benefactor and powerful ally who freed Inuyasha, revealed Naraku's deception, and helped him awaken Tetsusaiga. Inuyasha later pledged to help Minos when needed. 283 285 289 310
- Sesshomaru — Older half-brother and bitter rival. Their conflict centers on Inu Taisho's inheritance, though Inuyasha still worries about Sesshomaru's survival. 287 321
- Yomi — Frequent sparring partner in verbal arguments. Yomi regularly teases him, especially over his pride and feelings. 283 298
- Sakura — A hair-spirit yokai who initially fought Inuyasha, then became Minos's subordinate. Their hostility intensified after Sakura tried to take his hair. 297 318
- Totosai — The swordsmith responsible for Tetsusaiga and its later replacement. Inuyasha sought him out to improve his weapon and help Kikyo. 305 317
- Naraku — The half-demon responsible for destroying Inuyasha and Kikyo's relationship. Inuyasha pursued and captured him after learning the truth. 285 309 310
