History

Orochi and Kaido's Rule

Following Kōzuki Oden's death, Wano fell under the combined control of Kurozumi Orochi and Kaido's Beasts Pirates. The country was converted into a vast weapons-production center, while all regions outside the Flower Capital suffered severe industrial pollution. Fields, rivers, and forests deteriorated; food production declined; and widespread famine forced residents into factories or into service under Orochi and Kaido. 65

Kuri was particularly devastated because of its connection to Oden. Orochi's forces repeatedly purged the region, leaving abandoned fields, poisoned rivers, smoke-producing factories, and roadside corpses. 71 The country’s remaining samurai and Kōzuki loyalists continued to resist, though their numbers and resources steadily diminished. 78 83

First Assault on Onigashima

Nearly a thousand samurai assembled to attack Onigashima while Kaido was absent. Minos aided their preparations by monitoring Onigashima and later freeing skilled prisoners from Udon Prison, including Kawamatsu and Hyogoro, to reinforce the attacking force. 79 87 88

The assault initially breached Onigashima, but Kaido’s return ended it decisively. His Conqueror’s Haki incapacitated most of the samurai, and Hyogoro was killed while confronting him. 93 Minos, Kōzuki Hiyori, Ashura Dōji, and Kawamatsu escaped Wano by ship afterward. 96

Liberation and Gourmet Cell Transformation

Years later, Minos returned as Kaido, the Marines, and several major pirate forces converged on Wano. During the battle over the Flower Capital, Orochi was attacked by Akainu, while the city faced destruction from a volcanic eruption. 231 234

Hiyori accepted Minos's terms for saving the capital: Wano would become the base of his pirate crew. Minos used a Gourmet Cell Meteorite to alter the magma, land, and ecosystem, removing the country’s industrial pollution and converting it into a highly fertile Gourmet Country. 234 235

Hiyori subsequently named Minos Wano’s Guardian King. While she retained responsibility for civil governance, Minos planned to collect taxes and food for military expenses, obtain high-grade ingredients, and recruit willing sailors rather than restore weapons factories. 235

Integration with Onigashima

Wano’s recovery was complicated by the loss of officials, samurai, infrastructure, and villages under the former regime. Hiyori struggled to govern a country of several million people while managing dangerous Gourmet Beasts and rebuilding local administration. 235 236

After marrying Minos, Hiyori moved Wano’s political center from the damaged Flower Capital to Onigashima. The island had become Wano’s richest region, handled more than half of its economic activity, and stood only a few thousand meters from the mainland after expanding through Gourmet Cell growth. 257

Samurai Rebellion

Three years after Wano’s transformation, some newly trained samurai began viewing Minos’s crew as foreign occupiers despite their role in protecting and enriching the country. They resented the crew’s extraction of ingredients, minerals, talent, and military expenses, even though these demands were described as minor compared with Wano’s prosperity. 249 250

The samurai attempted to assassinate Minos using a false Devil Fruit transaction and later launched a larger attack on Onigashima. Their forces used life-burning potions derived from IQ Plants enhanced by Gourmet Cells, but were defeated by Minos’s forces, Yamato, and Nico Robin. 251 252 253 254

Hiyori failed to ransom the captured samurai, as Minos held them responsible for attempted assassination and for poisoning a Devil Fruit intended for him. 255 The political crisis ultimately led Hiyori to pursue a marriage alliance with Minos, after which the captured samurai were released as the wedding approached. 256 257

Geography

• Flower Capital — Wano’s traditional capital and former seat of power. Much of it was devastated during the volcanic crisis, including Tenshukaku. 235 257

Wano’s surrounding seas are exceptionally dangerous, making overseas travel difficult even for powerful natives. Its isolation was reinforced by hazardous waters, a massive waterfall, and a hidden port. 66 110 244

Society and Culture

Isolation and Currency

Wano remained isolated for approximately 800 years and had no contact with the World Government. As a result, its population did not recognize Belly as currency and instead used gold-and-silver alloy coins known as Ōban and Koban. 66

Its isolation also produced strong xenophobia. Foreigners were frequently assumed to be affiliated with the Beasts Pirates, particularly during Kaido’s occupation. 70

Samurai Tradition

Wano is one of the Pirate World’s foremost centers of swordsmanship. Its samurai integrate Armament Haki—locally called Ryūō—into their sword techniques, and the country’s martial traditions are widespread enough that samurai can be found in ordinary villages. 67 73 256

• Samurai function as local protectors and grassroots officials, comparable to a combination of village leaders, security officers, and minor nobles. 236

Hiyori’s government inherited a severe shortage of capable officials and trustworthy grassroots samurai. Many former bureaucrats either served Orochi, were imprisoned, or died during the occupation. 238

Gourmet Cell Ecosystem

The Gourmet Cell Meteorite transformed Wano into an exceptionally productive food-producing nation. Pollution disappeared, while local terrain and organisms became edible or developed into high-value gourmet ingredients. 235 244

Wano has abundant mineral resources and historically settled accounts through gold-based currency. 66 It is also a major source of Seastone and possesses a long-standing forging tradition. 76 257

Gourmet Beasts

Gourmet Cells enhanced Wano’s wildlife along with its land. Even formerly weak animals became much more dangerous, while the strongest Gourmet Beasts were estimated not to exceed Hunting Level 20. 236 244

• Ordinary Gourmet Beasts can require ten fully equipped modern soldiers with firearms to capture. 244
